'Quality Ladders' And Ricardian Trade, M. Scott Taylor Dec 1993

'Quality Ladders' And Ricardian Trade, M. Scott Taylor

M. Scott Taylor

A Model of endogenous growth and trade is developed that extends the continuum Ricardian model of Dornbusch et al. (1977) to a dynamic framework, generalizes the 'Quality ladders' approach of Grossman and Helpman (1991a,b), and complements the work of Krugman (1987) on dynamic Ricardian economies. In contrast to earlier work the model incorporates heterogeneity across industries in research and production technologies, and in the technological opportunity for innovation. The importance of heterogeneity is demonstrated through a comparative steady-state analysis. Several applications for the model are discussed and many others appear possible given its relatively simple structure.

Predicting Birth Weight: Relative Importance Of Sociodemographic, Medical, And Prenatal Care Variables, Terri Combs-Orme, Christina Rtisley-Curtiss, Ronald Taylor

Terri Combs-Orme

This study uses the 1980 National Natality Study to examine the relative importance of sociodemographic factors, medical-risk factors, and prenatal care in predicting birth weight. Findings indicate that both sociodemographic and medical-risk factors are important in predicting birth weight, with medical risks accounting for slightly more variance (after accounting for social variables) in birth weight. Although prenatal care accounts for only 1 percent of the variance, a statistical interaction between prenatal care and labor complications accounts for an additional 1 percent.

Constitutional Design And Law: The Political Economy Of Cabinet And Congressional Government, Matthew S. R. Palmer

The Hon Justice Matthew Palmer

The dissertation takes a political economy approach to constitutional design and legislation in the Westminster (Cabinet) and US (Congressional) models of government. Part I develops the economics of comparative political organization by constructing a theoretical framework for analyzing constitutional design. Part II applies the framework to distinguish the essences of the Cabinet and Congressional systems of constitutional design in the contexts of US and Canadian federal government. Part III analyzes the effects of the different constitutional designs on the processes of legislating in each system and on the substantive characteristics of legislation in each system. The analysis is subjected to …

Ozgur 1993 Turkiye'nin Ozel Cevre Koruma Bolgeleri Politikasi (Specially Protected Areas Policy Of Turkey) Türkiye'nin Özel Çevre Koruma Bölgeleri Politikası: Foça Örneği, Huseyin Ozgur Prof.Dr.

Huseyin Ozgur Prof.Dr.

Specially protected areas (SPAs) in Turkey were initiated in 1990 with the special interest of Prime Minister Turgut Özal and pressure from international agreements signed by Turkish Government. As of 1992, there were 12 SPAs in 5 provinces, most of them were on shorelines of lakes or seas. The decision making of SPAs policy in Turkey fit to muddling through. It helped to protect special and sensitive areas to be protected. All these SPAs had several small settlements and controversial usages of the land and water areas. The policy helped to control dense and uncontrolled settlements however created issues on …

Trips, Trade, And Technology Transfer, M. Scott Taylor Aug 1993

Trips, Trade, And Technology Transfer, M. Scott Taylor

M. Scott Taylor

A North-South model of unintentional technology transfer is developed where the stringency of sountern patent protection provides the institutional backdrop for a strategic game in a high-tech goods market. The appropriability regime is set endogenously and combines elements of imperfect sounthern patent protection with the protection afforded by market-made northern technology "masquing". Less stringent protection of northern intellectual property can "work" much like other strategic trade policies; therefore, developed countries appear to be right in demand discussion of intellectual property rights in GATT.

Mutual Versus Unilateral Mistake In Contracts, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Ian Ayres Jun 1993

Mutual Versus Unilateral Mistake In Contracts, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Ian Ayres

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Courts sometimes allow contracts to be voidable because of mistakes in their basic assumptions. The common wisdom is that rescission is more likely to be granted if the mistake is mutual rather than unilateral---an incorrect belief common to both parties, not just to one. Rescission for mistake can be justified as a way to avoid inefficient transactions and to reduce the costs of collecting information on whether a mistake has been made. These reasons do not justify a general rule distinguishing between mutual and unilateral mistake.

News Media Narratives Of Interethnic Isolation And Confrontation In Post-Andrew Dade County, Florida, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr Apr 1993

News Media Narratives Of Interethnic Isolation And Confrontation In Post-Andrew Dade County, Florida, Douglas J. Swanson Ed.D Apr

Douglas J. Swanson, Ed.D APR

Hurricane Andrew was the costliest natural disaster to strike the United States, and the strongest hurricane since the 1920s. Andrew permanently changed the landscape by wiping out entire communities and scattering the people who lived in them. At least 20 deaths were directly attributed to the storm. Property damage was calculated into the tens of billions of dollars. We can lessen the impact of such a future event upon people by gaining a greater understanding of the communication patterns that develop among survivors after a hurricane or other natural disaster has passed--particularly, survivors of differing ethnic and cultural backgrounds. By …

Childhood, Robert K. Thomas Mar 1993

Childhood, Robert K. Thomas

Robert K. Thomas

The author gave an account of his life as a youngster in a Cherokee community in the hills of eastern Oklahoma and the changes he had experienced in the community, in order to give the reader a "feel" for the kind of life an Indian youngster leads. In a broad sense, the quality of life of Indian youngsters today in rural Indian communities is very much like the author's experience as a youngster.

Lobbying When The Decisionmaker Can Acquire Independent Information, Eric Bennett Rasmusen Mar 1993

Lobbying When The Decisionmaker Can Acquire Independent Information, Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Politicians trade off the cost of acquiring and processing information against the benefit of being re-elected. Lobbyists and protesters may possess private information upon which politicians would like to rely without the effort of verification. If the politician does not try to verify, however, the lobbyist or protester has no incentive to be truthful. This is modelled as a game in which the lobbyist lobbies to show his conviction that the electorate is on his side. In equilibrium, sometimes the politician investigates, and sometimes the information is false. The lobbyists and the electorate benefit from the possibility of lobbying when …

Special Review: Evaluation Of The Exploratory Factor Analysis Programs Provided In Spssx And Spss/Pc+, Gregory J. Boyle

Gregory J. Boyle

Given the frequent use of SPSSX and SPSS/PC+ exploratory factor analysis in analyzing multivariate psychometric data, it is germane to examine the limitations of the Factor program as it currently exists. Over recent years, the routines in these packages generally have been developed and expanded considerably. In particular, the exploratory factor analysis procedures have been greatly extended and enhanced with inclusion of additional estimation methods such as minimum likelihood, unweighted least squares, generalized least squares, and so on. Like wise, availability of a Scree plot of the latent roots against factor number has facilitated determination of the appropriate factor-extraction number. …

The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz Jan 1993

The Paradox Of Ideology, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

A standard problem with the objectivity of social scientific theory in particular is that it is either self-referential, in which case it seems to undermine itself as ideology, or self-excepting, which seem pragmatically self-refuting. Using the example of Marx and his theory of ideology, I show how self-referential theories that include themselves in their scope of explanation can be objective. Ideology may be roughly defined as belief distorted by class interest. I show how Marx thought that natural science was informed by class interest but not therefore necessarily ideology. Capitalists have an interest in understanding the natural world (to a …

Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz Jan 1993

Functional Explanation And Metaphysical Individualism, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

A number of (present or former) analytical Marxists, such as Jon Elster, have argued that functional explanation has almost no place in the social sciences. (Although the discussion is framed in terms of a debate among analytical Marxists, the point is quite general, and Marxism is used for illustrative purposes.) Functional explanation accounts for what is to be explained by reference to its function; thus, sighted organism have eyes because eyes enable them to see. Elster and other critics of functional explanation argue that this pattern of explanation is inconsistent with "methodological individualism," the idea, as they understand it, that …

Promoting Honesty In Negotiation: An Exercise In Practical Ethics, Peter Cramton, J Gregory Dees Jan 1993

Promoting Honesty In Negotiation: An Exercise In Practical Ethics, Peter Cramton, J Gregory Dees

Peter Cramton

In a competitive and morally imperfect world, business people are often faced with serious ethical challenges. Harboring suspicions about the ethics of others, many feel justified in engaging in less-than-ideal conduct to protect their own interests. The most sophisticated moral arguments are unlikely to counteract this behavior. We believe that this morally defensive behavior is responsible, in large part, for much undesirable deception in negotiation. Drawing on recent work in the literature of negotiations, we present some practical guidance on how negotiators might build trust, establish common interests, and secure credibility for their statements thereby promoting honesty We also point …
