Estimates For Worldwide Laboratory Animal Use In 2005, Katy Taylor, Nicky Gordon, Gill Langley, Wendy Higgins

Gill Langley, PhD

Animal experimentation continues to generate public and political concern worldwide. Relatively few countries collate and publish animal use statistics, yet this is a first and essential step toward public accountability and an informed debate, as well as being important for effective policy-making and regulation. The implementation of the Three Rs (replacement, reduction and refinement of animal experiments) should be expected to result in a decline in animal use, but without regular, accurate statistics, this cannot be monitored. Recent estimates of worldwide annual laboratory animal use are imprecise and unsubstantiated, ranging from 28–100 million. We collated data for 37 countries that …

A Primer On Multivariate Analysis Of Variance (Manova) For Behavioral Scientists, Russell T. Warne Nov 2014

A Primer On Multivariate Analysis Of Variance (Manova) For Behavioral Scientists, Russell T. Warne

Russell T Warne

Reviews of statistical procedures (e.g., Bangert & Baumberger, 2005; Kieffer, Reese, & Thompson, 2001; Warne, Lazo, Ramos, & Ritter, 2012) show that one of the most common multivariate statistical methods in psychological research is multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). However, MANOVA and its associated procedures are often not properly understood, as demonstrated by the fact that few of the MANOVAs published in the scientific literature were accompanied by the correct post hoc procedure, descriptive discriminant analysis (DDA). Librarians have collected database usage statistics for as long as they have been available. But other than using them to decide whether or not to renew a database subscription, what can we use them for? The session will begin with a brief overview of COUNTER compliance and what kinds of reports are available from vendors before discussing how to mix, blend, and splice your usage numbers to get the most out of your statistics. The session will include group activities to give you some hands-on experience.

Regression Analysis And The Sociological Imagination Dec 2013

Regression Analysis And The Sociological Imagination

Fernando De Maio

Regression analysis is an important aspect of most introductory statistics courses in sociology but is often presented in contexts divorced from the central concerns that bring students into the discipline. Consequently, we present five lesson ideas that emerge from a regression analysis of income inequality and mortality in the United States and Canada.
