Cindi (Trainor) Blyberg
[manuscript] In this issue of Library Technology Reports, authors Cindi Trainor and Jason Price revisit OpenURL and library linking. The OpenURL framework for context-sensitive linking has been in use for a decade, during which library collections and users' behaviors have undergone radical change. This report examines how libraries can make use of web usability principles and data analysis to improve their local resolver installations and looks to the wider web for what the future of this integral library technology might hold. The Crisis In Scholarly Communication, Part I: Understanding The Issues And Engaging Your Faculty, Hillary Corbett

Given the rising costs of journal subscriptions and the difficulty that authors have in retaining rights to their own works, reform in the scholarly publishing industry is needed. This article, the first in a two-part series, presents an overview of the crisis in scholarly communication and discusses the groundwork that must be laid in order to develop successful programs to address the crisis on college and university campuses. As the de facto centers of scholarship and research on campus, libraries must educate faculty and advocate for more sustainable publishing models. Programs developed by the Boston Library Consortium and its member …

Effects Of Library Instruction On University Students’ Satisfaction With The Library: A Longitudinal Study, Anthony Stamatoplos, Robert Mackoy
Effects Of Library Instruction On University Students’ Satisfaction With The Library: A Longitudinal Study, Anthony Stamatoplos, Robert Mackoy
Robert Mackoy
Consideration of satisfaction should be an important part of the evaluation of library services. Satisfaction depends, to some extent, on patron expectations of services. This study evaluated changes in student expectations following library instruction and how they were related to overall, long-term satisfaction with the library. Satisfaction appeared to be related to student perceptions of information accessibility, staff competence and helpfulness, computer usefulness and ease of use, and skill level for using libraries. The study suggests that libraries may be well served by measuring patron satisfaction and learning what variables drive satisfaction at particular libraries.

Going Green To Save Some Green: Library Contributions To Campus Sustainability, Christopher A. Sweet, Meg Miner
Christopher A. Sweet
In a time of shrinking endowments and reduced budgets can libraries really hope to make an impact on a global problem like climate change? In this presentation Illinois Wesleyan University librarians Meg Miner and Chris Sweet will argue that not only can libraries play a significant role in furthering campus sustainability but that dwindling budgets can actually be a catalyst for positive environmental changes. Miner and Sweet are both members of the Illinois Wesleyan GREENetwork and will draw upon their personal experiences in campus environmental efforts for this presentation; they will offer practical ideas for implementing “green” library initiatives that …

U.S. Government Electronic Information Resources: A Start-Up Kit For Small And Medium-Sized Libraries, Cheryl B. Truesdell
Cheryl B. Truesdell
The U.S. Government is the largest producer of information in the world. These include some of the most useful reference sources at the information desk – the Occupational Outlook Handbook, Statistical Abstract of the United States, and the World Factbook. Since 1994 G.P.O. and other federal agencies have been moving steadily toward electronic production of information. Virtually all of these information sources are now freely available on the Internet. With the exponential proliferation of electronic government information resources, choosing which resources to add to the collection or highlight on library web sites can be a daunting task. Fortunately, G.P.O. and …
