This chapter outlines the main concepts in the linguistic study of American Sign Language (ASL), a language used by deaf people in the United States and a large part of Canada. While the study of languages has been around for centuries, the vast majority of research has focused on spoken languages; approaching the signs used by deaf people as full-fledged, natural languages in their own right and therefore equally worthy of linguistic study is a relatively new concept. External Possession Meets Bare Nouns In Malagasy, Ileana Paul

This paper examines apparent noun incorporation in Malagasy that is the result of external possession (possessor raising). It is shown that such incorporation is not derived via head movement or via compounding. Instead, it is argued that this is an instance of pseudo noun incorporation (Massam, 2001): the possessum is merged as an NP sister to the predicate. As for the structure of external possession, a non-movement analysis is proposed: the apparent possessor is generated as the specifier of a null possessive head and binds an empty argument position within the possessum. This paper presents arguments in favor of a pseudocleft analysis of a certain class of sentences in Malagasy, despite the lack of an overt wh-element. It is shown that voice morphology on the verb creates an operator-variable relationship much like the one created by wh-movement in free relatives in English and other languages. The bulk of the paper argues in favor of an inversion analysis of specificational pseudoclefts in Malagasy: a predicate DP is fronted to a topic position from within a small clause constituent. Nous constatons qu’il existe plusieurs types de réduction: la réduction syntaxique, morphophonologique, et la réduction phonétique. Cet article porte sur l’anaphore malgache tena ‘corps’. Il est démontré que cette anaphore est un nominal «nu». À cause de sa forme, la distribution de tena est assez restreinte et contraste avec la distribution d’un autre élément supposément anaphorique, ny tenany ‘son corps’. Ce dernier n’est pas une anaphore, en effet, mais a la distribution et l’interprétation d’un nominal complexe qui contient un pronom possessif. This article examines the Malagasy anaphor tena ‘body’. This paper argues for a pseudo-cleft analysis of so-called clefts in Malagasy. Evidence is presented that the clefted element is in fact the matrix (copular) predicate and that the pre-suppositional clause is a headless relative in subject position. The proposed pseudo-cleft structure accounts for the focus interpretation of this construction, due to the underlying presence of a definite description in the subject position.

This thesis explores the nature of voice in Malagasy, a language spoken in Madagascar. In chapter 2, it is claimed that different passives promote arguments from different structural positions. Evidence is provided for a particular position, [Spec, v2P], where a certain class of elements (“displaced themes”) may be generated. One particular passive, the aprefix, promotes to subject elements in this position. In chapter 3, arguments are presented in favour of a structural analysis of circumstantial topic (CT). CT morphology licenses all arguments of the verb. Due to a requirement that all clauses have a subject (the Extended Projection Principle), some …

This paper examines two different passive formations in Malagasy. Although one passive appears to promote certain types of adjuncts, it is shown that these adjuncts can appear in an NP argument position. Passive in Malagasy is thus argued to uniquely promote NP arguments to subject position.

Cet article décrit la construction existentielle en malgache et rend compte de la distribution et de l'interprétation des syntagmes nominaux. Il est montré que les syntagmes nominaux spécifiques se déplacent à l'extérieur de la petite proposition complément du verbe existentiel misy alors que les syntagmes nominaux non-spécifiques demeurent dans leur position de base. Cette corrélation entre la position des syntagmes nominaux et leur interprétation appuie l'hypothèse d'appariement (Mapping Hypothesis) de Diesing (1992). Cependant, cette analyse structurale ne rend pas compte de l'interprétation précise attribuée aux syntagmes nominaux spécifiques, qu'il s'agisse de l'interprétation partitive, possessive ou locative.
