This session will explore challenges and opportunities in hosting mid-career international scholars by examining two Fulbright programs (Humphrey Fellowships and Scholars-in- Residence) that are unique in requiring U.S. institutions to initiate the application process. Panelists will discuss how these programs: foster a mutual exchange of knowledge and understanding; help U.S. institutions of higher education advance their international presence; assist in faculty and curriculum development; and diversify and enrich their campus and the surrounding host community.

Background: Food-based clinical trials are vital to advance the scientific evidence for the impact of food on health. These trials reqUire stringent dietary assessment to substantiate effects. We are evaluating the use of a self-administered computerised dietary assessment (DietAdvice) in a current food based weight loss trial. Objective: This cross sectional study aims to compare data from DietAdvice with diet history (DH) and food record (FR) dietary assessments measured at baseline. Materials and Methods: Baseline data for n=71 overweight (23-60 years, BMI 25-37 kg/m2) participants was utilised. The social world can be described in terms of experts and consumers, identified by their roles and responsibilities towards each other. The advertising and marketing of products based on nutritional value is widespread, and attended to by consumers, yet research in the marketing and nutrition domains suggests that consumers may lack the requisite knowledge and skills to evaluate and use this information appropriately. This concern can be viewed from a sociological perspective, and a theoretical framework for studying this context can be provided by ethnomethodology which describes how people make sense of their social world. Participant recruitment is a difficult and time consuming aspect of clinical trials, often resulting in delays and budget overruns. Having reached recruitment targets the next challenge is participant retention. Some weight-loss studies have attrition rates around 60% which may introduce bias in the results. It may be possible to reduce attrition rates if known predictors can be found but to date few studies produced consistent results. The aim of this exploratory study was to determine whether start date could be a predictor of attrition for participants involved in the SMART weight loss clinical trial (ACTRN12608000425392). [extract] This paper examines the role of the language and academic skills (LAS) lecturer in a multi-media and geographically distributed learning environment at the University of Wollongong. By this we mean providing language and academic skills support where subjects comprising various degree programs are taught simultaneously across a range of networked satellite campuses including, at times, the central campus: hence the idea of a ‘distributed learning environment’. Subject delivery to this network of campuses is variously achieved through the use of multi-media teaching and learning technologies such as videoconferencing, web-based resources, online discussion spaces, pod-cast lectures, and face-to-face tutorials. Michel Foucault argues that the technologies of identity – whether professional or institutional – rely on what he calls ‘games of truth’. He argues that these truth games comprise ‘an ensemble of rules for the production of truth . . . which can be considered in function of its principles and its rules of procedure as valid or not’ (cited in Gauthier, 1988, p. 15). Moreover, we can only become subjects by ‘subjecting’ ourselves to selected truth games because there is neither selfhood nor truth outside of these games. In her plenary address to the 2001 Australian Language and Academic Skills Conference, Carolyn Webb (2002, p. 7) suggested that in comparison to other educational developers in the university context, Language and Academic Skills (LAS) practitioners had been less strategic in addressing their identity and practice ‘to secure their place in the landscape of university work, [and] to reinvent themselves for securing future places’. She concluded with the suggestion that LAS practitioners might wish to see themselves as ‘facilitators of organisational learning’ (Webb, 2002, p. 17). Our paper examines the complexities of providing academic learning support for students studying at small rural and regional Australian university campuses. As educators who live and work in regional campus communities, we have come to understand that the academic advice provided on campus has the potential to resonate through the social, and vice versa. Quality teaching and learning in higher education has become a mantra in the rhetoric of university policies, and, increasingly, assuring successful student learning is seen asthe core business of the modern university. Ironically, this comes at a time when academic staff are faced with unprecedented demands on their teaching repertoire while being expected to function with fewer resources. In this paper we first clarify and analyse notions of what internationalisation is and the ways in which it has become an important strategic goal for higher education institutions in Australia. In particular, this paper seeks to demonstrate the attributes of a whole-of-institution conception of internationalisation, which requires defining and analysing what is meant by whole-of-institution. Muscle fatigue is a common clinical sign and possible precursor to musculoskeletal injury. Existing methods of detecting muscle fatigue qualify changes within muscle or across joints, but are expensive, invasive or difficult to use. A technique of mechanomyography utilising maximal percutaneous stimulation (known as the Muscle Displacement Laser {MDL}) is an easy non-invasive assessment tool, which may have considerable application in measuring muscle fatigue and determining recovery.
