Youth Activism, Art And Transitional Artist: Emerging Spaces Of Memory After The Jasmin Revolution, Arnaud Kurze Dec 2018

Youth Activism, Art And Transitional Artist: Emerging Spaces Of Memory After The Jasmin Revolution, Arnaud Kurze

Arnaud Kurze

This project explores the creation of alternative transitional justice spaces in post-conflict contexts, particularly concentrating on the role of art and the impact of social movements to address human rights abuses. Drawing from post-authoritarian Tunisia, it scrutinizes the work of contemporary youth activists and artists to deal with the past and foster sociopolitical change. Although these vanguard protesters provoked the overthrow of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in 2011, the power vacuum was quickly filled by old elites. The exclusion of young revolutionaries from political decision-making led to unprecedented forms of mobilization to account for repression and injustice under …

Citizenship and Community Course that asks students to be fully engaged citizens of many different but connected communities.
"Who Gets To Tell Story?"
My objective for the talk:  Telling or hearing story while conscious of the human ecology—listening to story justly with social consciousness of equality.
I would like to define what qualifies as “story.”  I believe essentially that every person, artifact, ritual, etc. is story.  Everything we know comes to us via story; we are surrounded by story.  …

Objectives: This study aimed to develop a scale that can measure the role competency of oncology nurses during shared decision-making process. Methods: A total of 226 oncology nurses who actively provide direct care to patients from inpatient and outpatient oncology units in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest completed the online or mail survey. Exploratory factor analysis and parallel analysis showed the multidimensionality of the role competency scale on shared decision-making nurses. Results: The role competency scale on shared decision-making nurses revealed four dimensions: knowledge, attitudes, communication, and adaptability. The 22 items have excellent internal consistency with a Cronbach’s alpha of …

Tolkien's Surrealistic Pillow: Leaf By Niggle, Michael K. Organ Oct 2018

Tolkien's Surrealistic Pillow: Leaf By Niggle, Michael K. Organ

Michael Organ

Much has been written in regards to the content and meaning of J.R.R. Tolkien's semiautobiographical short story Leaf by Niggle, yet there has been little discussion around its origins (Hyde 1986, Collier 2005, Nelson 2010, Glyer and Long 2011, Hanks 2012, McIntosh 2013, Wilde 2015). The scholarship focusses on autobiographical and everyday aspects, placing it amongst Tolkien's small collection of short stories and alongside works such as Farmer Giles of Ham. Unlike the latter, Leaf by Niggle contains elements which suggest the realm of surrealistic fantasy. This article proposes a connection between Leaf by Niggle as published in 1945 and …

Confrontational Continuum: Modernism And The Psychedelic Art Of Martin Sharp, Michael K. Organ Oct 2018

Confrontational Continuum: Modernism And The Psychedelic Art Of Martin Sharp, Michael K. Organ

Michael Organ

The Australian artist Martin Sharp (1942-2013) produced a series of psychedelic artworks in London between 1966-8, the most famous of which were the Disraeli Gears record cover for rock group Cream and the Bob Dylan Blowin’ in the Mind poster. Sharp’s work exemplifies the connection between early twentieth century Modernist art movements, Pop art and acid-induced psychedelia of the 1960s. In addition, the poster Max Ernst: The Birdman from 1967, represents a homage to Dada and Surrealism, with special reference to anarchy, desire, and freedom of expression. In the spirit of Dada, the poster is meaningfully confrontational, exposing the darker …

Re-Imagining Sandon Point, Glenn Mitchell, Michael Organ Oct 2018

Re-Imagining Sandon Point, Glenn Mitchell, Michael Organ

Michael Organ

When a housing development at Sandon Point north of Wollongong NSW obliterated country that has spiritual, political and economic significance for generations of indigenous people, the consequences were dramatic. Protests and court cases followed. This paper explores loss by imagining life at this place long before land clearing and concrete pours took place. The paper draws on the destroyed evidence of early indigenous life, written colonial accounts, paintings and drawings as well as indigenous memory. It argues that the evidence courts and developers rejected as central to Sandon Point’s indigenous history, has contributed to its contemporary definition as a significant …

Sounds Of Celluloid Dreams: Coming Of The Talkies To Cinema In Colonial Korea, Brian Yecies Jul 2018

Sounds Of Celluloid Dreams: Coming Of The Talkies To Cinema In Colonial Korea, Brian Yecies

Dr Brian Yecies

Conventional reports often hint at how Koreans gained film industry experience and training in Korea and Japan during the 1920s and early 1930s under Cultural Policy reforms. Yet, few studies consider the full range of influences that motivated their contributions to a local vibrant popular entertainment industry and to the global transition to sound. This article attempts to recast the story of cinema in colonial Korea by offerintg new insights into the productive and destructive characteristics of colonial modernity.

Hate Speech As Theater, Adam White Jul 2018

Hate Speech As Theater, Adam White

Adam White

More public and philosophical attention has recently been given to hate speech.  Hate speech does not merely hurt feelings; it is public communication that implies that the targeted group does not merit the constitutional protections assured the speaker.  Hate speech poses a riddle given the liberal commitment to freedom of speech independent of content.

This paper argues that philosophers misdiagnose hate speech.  The novel claim is that hate speech is a tactic in a game being played by the speakers.  The game’s prize is the same kind of personal buzz felt by effective theater actors.  Winning requires manipulating the audience’s …

Crime Futures Market, Adam White Jul 2018

Crime Futures Market, Adam White

Adam White

Responding to the legally guilty is typically presented as a choice between incarceration and rehabilitation.  This paper suggests a third option: preemptive rehabilitation.  The argument presents an innovative institutional approach and a unique moral justification.  The vision is a crime futures market that transfers the risk of potential crime away from undeserving victims and into the portfolios of willing investors.  Instead of taxpayers paying exclusively for prisons, the proposal would allow young adults to sign contracts to not get involved in crime, but pay the award only upon their future success.  Because the contracts represent a future payment they are …

Flag-Waving: Visual Arguments, Verbal Reconstruction, And Speaker Intentions, Brian Larson Jul 2018

Flag-Waving: Visual Arguments, Verbal Reconstruction, And Speaker Intentions, Brian Larson

Brian Larson

This study extends previous work in visual argumentation by studying speakers’ own verbal reconstructions of their visual communicative acts. The researcher interviewed 70 persons wearing or carrying American flags at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in Cleveland and Philadelphia in July 2016, to determine whether “speakers” make arguments by wearing or carrying it. For more than 20 years, theorists have debated whether it is meaningful to speak of "visual arguments," whether they can be purely visual, non-verbal communication, and whether and how they can be reconstructed in the form of the conclusion-support structure of an argument. This analysis provides …

Building An Ethical Digital Humanities Community: Librarian, Faculty, And Student Collaboration, Roopika Risam, Justin Snow, Susan Edwards Jun 2018

Building An Ethical Digital Humanities Community: Librarian, Faculty, And Student Collaboration, Roopika Risam, Justin Snow, Susan Edwards

Roopika Risam

This article examines work building a digital humanities community at Salem State’s Berry Library. The initiatives are comprised of a three-pronged approach: laying groundwork to build a DH center, building the DH project Digital Salem as a place-based locus for digital scholarship and launching an undergraduate internship program to explore ethical ways of creating innovative research experiences for undergraduate students. Together, these initiatives constitute an important move toward putting libraries at the center of creating DH opportunities for underserved student populations and a model for building DH at regional comprehensive universities.
