It is said that Abdul Kassem Ismael, the scholarly Grand Vizier of Persia in the tenth century had a library of 117,000 volumes. He was an avid reader and a lover of books. On his many travels, he could not bear to part with this beloved books. Wherever he went they were carried about by 400 camels trained to walk in alphabetical order. His camel drivers thus became librarians who could put their hands instantly on any book for which their master asked. (Hawkins, Brian L and Battin, Patricia (2000) Camel Drivers and Gatecrashers, Educause Review May/June 2000 p50). How …

So, we all start getting up and shaking off the chill from the night. The sun slowly begins to make it’s presence known. Breakfasts are made, hikes to the creek for one last look-see.
We break camp and load everything into the rental Santa Fe and people pile into Bobo’s truck to head up the mountain. Great, we are getting an early start!
Bobo sped up a little so he wouldn’t dust us out. The sun is getting warmer.
We were traveling a little ways behind Bobo and I was taking video of the crazy ride …

Varroa In The Aloha State, Tammy Horn
Varroa In The Aloha State, Tammy Horn
Tammy Horn
The Hawaiian word for fate is hopena, and since the early 1900s, it’s been a matter of hopena that Varroa mites would eventually come to the Islands. The inevitability increased in 2001 when APHIS/USDA forced Hawai’i to allow transshipments of queens and package bees from New Zealand to Canada to pass through its ports. Since Varroa arrived on Oahu in 2006 and on the Big Island in 2008, many agencies have been working together to create appropriate infrastructure to address the latest arrival. According to Hawai’i Department of Agriculture (HDOA) branch chief Neil Reimer, 'Before Varroa showed up in Hawai’i, …

Frock Coat And Flag: Union Soldier Markers In Central Maine, Kimberly Sawtelle
Frock Coat And Flag: Union Soldier Markers In Central Maine, Kimberly Sawtelle
Kimberly J. Sawtelle
The Frock Coat and Flag motif of gravestone is a short-lived memorial theme borne from a compressed period of American history. The horrors, tragedy, and impact of the U.S. Civil War on American civilians and a lack of a comprehensive plan by the U.S. Congress to provide means or methods to bury and mark the graves of soldiers who died in service contributed to the manifestation of a portrait-style grave marker used by families in a relatively compact geographic region of central Maine between 1861 and 1864.

This poster presents an overview of an exploratory research initiative to examine and assess the viability of developing an institutional repository system at a teaching-oriented four-year university with minimal monetary commitment. A need has been identified for an institutional repository and necessary steps have been taken to implement it. Several departments worked together to create a prototype Institutional Repository using DSpace, an open source repository software. This repository represents a unique endeavor, in that it has been instituted at a non-research based university and has chosen to involve students in the planning, design, implementation, and documentation stages of the project. …

Exploring The Teaching Mind: Extending Participation In Lifelong Learning Through Engagement With A Supportive Community, Jeremy Szteiter
Exploring The Teaching Mind: Extending Participation In Lifelong Learning Through Engagement With A Supportive Community, Jeremy Szteiter
Jeremy Szteiter
This paper extends the notion of lifelong learning beyond gaining knowledge over a lifetime to preparing oneself to teach what has been learned to others. The "Teaching Mind," as I define the idea, involves thinking about what has been learned and what one knows by reconsidering that knowledge through the eyes of self as a teacher. The Teaching Mind assumes a broad notion of teaching that relates to informal and community learning across all areas of life and culture, beyond professional teaching in formal schools. The pursuit of the Teaching Mind is highly accessible to all those who wish to …

External Possession Meets Bare Nouns In Malagasy, Ileana Paul
External Possession Meets Bare Nouns In Malagasy, Ileana Paul
Ileana Paul
This paper examines apparent noun incorporation in Malagasy that is the result of external possession (possessor raising). It is shown that such incorporation is not derived via head movement or via compounding. Instead, it is argued that this is an instance of pseudo noun incorporation (Massam, 2001): the possessum is merged as an NP sister to the predicate. As for the structure of external possession, a non-movement analysis is proposed: the apparent possessor is generated as the specifier of a null possessive head and binds an empty argument position within the possessum. The resulting structure and meaning are shown to …

In the late 1930s, the photographer Gordon Parks arrived in Washington, DC, to work with Roy Stryker, director of the Farm Security Administration. Parks' first assignment was to tour the nation's capital, a city still governed by Jim Crow laws. Stryker locked Parks' camera in a closed and then bade the young black man adieu, with the expectation Parks would not return for a week.

In what ways can we use games to make moral demands of players and encouraging them to reflect on ethical issues? In this article we propose an ethically notable game as one that provides opportunities for encouraging ethical reasoning and reflection. Our analysis of the videogames Ultima IV, Manhunt, and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn highlights the central role that moral dilemmas can play towards creating ethically notable games. We discuss the different ways that these are implemented, such as placing players in situations in which their understanding of an ethical system is challenged, or by creating moral tension between the …

"On September 26th, 1997, a violent earthquake shook central Italy. The effects were devastating. Television stations from all over the world broadcasted images of the incomparable artistic heritage that risked being destroyed forever. In Monsanpolo del Tronto, a small town in the Marches, the earthquake damaged the beautiful church Maria Santissima Assunta. A few years later, during the restoration of the church, a sensational discovery was made: twenty perfectly preserved mummies from the middle of the sixteenth century wearing their original clothes. …

El español en contacto con otras lenguas is the first comprehensive historical, social, and linguistic overview of Spanish in contact with other languages in all of its major contexts—in Spain, the United States, and Latin America. This book explores the historical and social factors that have shaped contact varieties of the Spanish language, synthesizing the principle arguments and theories about language contact, and examining linguistic changes in Spanish phonology, morphology and syntax, and pragmatics.
Individual chapters analyze particular contact situations: in Spain, contact with Basque, Catalan, Valencian, and Galician; in Mexico, Central, and South America, contact with Nahuatl, Maya, Quechua, …

The Alliance For Progress And Housing Policy In Rio De Janeiro And Buenos Aires In The 1960s, Leandro Benmergui
The Alliance For Progress And Housing Policy In Rio De Janeiro And Buenos Aires In The 1960s, Leandro Benmergui
Leandro Benmergui
This article explores the construction of publicly financed low-income housing complexes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, in the 1960s. These housing developments were possible thanks to the arrival of foreign economic and technical assistance from the Alliance for Progress. Urban scholars, politicians, diplomats and urbanists of the Americas sought to promote middle-class habits, mass consumption and moderate political behaviour, especially among the poor, by expanding access to homeownership and ‘decent’ living conditions for a burgeoning urban population. As a result, the history of low-income housing should be understood within broader transnational discourses and practices about the …

Visual Tours Of Housing Projects In Buenos Aires And Rio De Janeiro, 1960s And 1970s (Multimedia Companion To The Special Issue: Transnational Urbanism In The Americas), Leandro Benmergui
Leandro Benmergui
The Multimedia Companion for the special issue of Urban History: 'Transnational Urbanism in the Americas', is an editorial project of Urban History’s North American Editorial Board. The emerging transnational paradigm raises many interesting possibilities for the historical study of cities. As the articles in the special issue suggest, transnationalism challenges us to map out the patterns of human life in new ways as they cross and construct cities, nations, and other crucial formations. Even as this new paradigm is causing a fundamental rethinking of our scholarship, the internet and the World Wide Web are also challenging our current modes of …
