Power And Practice In Academic Library Materials Selection Paradigms, Elena S. Smith

School of Information Student Research Journal

This article examines the theoretical and practical implications of three methods of materials acquisitions in an academic library. First, it evaluates how traditional collection development, electronic patron driven acquisitions (PDA) and other older forms of PDA affect materials storage, preservation, purchase speed and usage. Then this paper employs Foucault’s theories about power to discuss the ramifications of these acquisitions methods for librarians and three major user groups: faculty, graduate students and undergraduates. The article concludes that each method presents different practical and theoretical advantages and disadvantages.

A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words: The Perplexing Problem Of Indexing Images, Lindsay L. Marlow, Amy Miller

Indexing images has always been problematic due to their richness of content and innate subjectivity. Three traditional approaches to indexing images are described and analyzed. An introduction of the contemporary use of social tagging is presented along with its limitations. Traditional practices can continue to be used as a stand-alone solution, however deficiencies limit retrieval. A collaborative technique is supported by current research and a model created by the authors for its inception is explored. According to the National Adult Literacy Survey, nearly 90 million American adults test below a high school level for literacy skills (Kirsch, Jungeblut, Jenkins & Kolstad, 1993).Because most health materials are written at least at the high school level, this finding has major implications in terms of health care provision in this country (Helitzer, Hollis, Cotner & Oestreicher, 2009). The information environment is rapidly changing, affecting the ways in which information is organized and accessed. User needs and expectations have also changed due to the overwhelming influence of Web 2.0 tools. Conventional information systems no longer support evolving user needs. Based on current research, we explore a method that integrates the structure of controlled languages with the flexibility and adaptability of social tagging. This article discusses the current research and usage of social tagging and Web 2.0 applications within the academic library. Types of tags, the semiotics of tagging and its influence on indexing are covered.

HIV/AIDS remains an incurable epidemic in the United States that disproportionately affects men who have sex with men (MSM) and African Americans. Library and information science (LIS) professionals can play a vital role in keeping these higher risk groups informed about preventing HIV/AIDS and living with the disease, through a variety of current information resources that addresses their specific questions. This paper reviews collection development policies proposed by LIS professionals and library agencies since the late 1980s, and evaluates how such policies took higher-risk user groups into consideration. In April 2010, the Internet company Twitter announced that it had granted its entire archive of “Tweets” to the Library of Congress. These Tweets are typically generated by public users, who may or may not understand or expect that their submissions will be archived by a government agency. Archives of Web 2.0 material raise new ethical considerations for archivists, who must balance interests in preserving material with privacy interests of users who generated the content.
