The positive effects of intergroup contact on prejudice reduction have been widely validated by now. However, the potential of contact for intergroup relations is only available when there is readiness to have contact with outgroup members to begin with. In two correlational studies with the main ethnic groups in postconflict Kosovo, Albanian majority (Study 1, N = 221) and Serb minority (Study 2, N = 110), we examine how social identity complexity mechanism and distinctiveness threat contribute to predicting more readiness to have contact with outgroup members. As the establishment of a new national identity unfolds, we show that while …
“Pure Water” Sale And Its Socio - Economic Implications In Nigeria., Muhammad Bello Muhammad, Muhammad Tasiu Dansabo
“Pure Water” Sale And Its Socio - Economic Implications In Nigeria., Muhammad Bello Muhammad, Muhammad Tasiu Dansabo
Journal of Environmental Sustainability
The study aim to show the gradual acceptance of buying water in the open market across Nigeria. The commoditization of water is most manifest in the boom of packaged water, especially the ones in sachets popularly called ‘pure water’. The initial position of the government was to ignore the industry as part of the informal economy. After considerable concerns were raised on public health grounds that water merchants were selling ‘pure gutter’ instead of ‘pure water’, the government, through the National Agency for Food and Drugs Control (NAFDAC) intervened to regulate standards. Proprietors of packaged water are expected to apply …

Role Of Ict In Promoting Sustainable Consumption And Production Patterns - A Guideline In The Context Of Bangladesh, Molla E. Majid
Role Of Ict In Promoting Sustainable Consumption And Production Patterns - A Guideline In The Context Of Bangladesh, Molla E. Majid
Journal of Environmental Sustainability
Sustainable development is of much focus now-a-days due to global warming and continuing depletion of natural resources. Implementation of sustainable consumption and production patterns is central to achieving sustainable development. Many countries along with the United Nations have reiterated this fact in multiple global platforms. Growing industrialisation and population growth are gradually making developing countries more and more susceptible to unsustainable patterns of production and consumption. Many governments are taking strategies to change this situation. Science and technology have been proven to be effective in fighting poverty and un-sustainability in many cases previously, and have the potential to be helpful …

The Lost & Found Game Series: Teaching Medieval Religious Law In Context, Owen Gottlieb, Ian Schreiber
Presentations and other scholarship
Lost & Found is a strategy card-to-mobile game series that teaches medieval religious legal systems with attention to period accuracy and cultural and historical context. The Lost & Found project seeks to expand the discourse around religious legal systems, to enrich public conversations in a variety of communities, and to promote greater understanding of the religious traditions that build the fabric of the United States. Comparative religious literacy can build bridges between and within communities and prepare learners to be responsible citizens in our pluralist democracy. The first game in the series is a strategy game called Lost & Found …

In The Group Home: Disenfranchised Youth And The Creative Writing Workshop As Intervention, Alyse Bensel
Journal of Creative Writing Studies
Nationwide, creative writing outreach programs serve marginalized groups in the community, empowering participants to regain a sense of control through non-verbal creative outlets. In striving to maintain the humanity and dignity of participants, pedagogies for underserved groups call for workshop facilitators to accompany rather than instruct. Using the group home adolescent population as an example, this article advocates for future alliances between the academy and the community to serve local at-risk populations. This collaboration will foster interdisciplinary cooperation and develop service learning coursework opportunities for positive social change.
The Impact Of National Culture On Corporate Environmental Performance: How Much Does Your Origin Say About How Green You Are?, Felice Petruzzella, Antonio Salvi, Anastasia Giakoumelou
The Impact Of National Culture On Corporate Environmental Performance: How Much Does Your Origin Say About How Green You Are?, Felice Petruzzella, Antonio Salvi, Anastasia Giakoumelou
Journal of Environmental Sustainability
This paper aims to study the effect of national culture on corporate environmental responsibility practices and commitment. To this end, we employ the Hofstede framework of cultural dimensions in order to examine each cultural aspect’s power to predict a firm’s environmental performance. Furthermore, we explore the potential of national environmental commitment as a moderator of the relationship between national culture and corporate environmental performance.
Our findings, deriving from a sample of 591 corporations of the S&P 1200 index, suggest that a firm’s environmental performance is influenced by the culture characterizing its country of origin. Among the cultural aspects that function …

The application of phasor measurement unit (PMU) data in the power industry is currently an area of intense interest. The key driver for PMU technology is to use the precise time sources provided by Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites to accurately measure the relative voltage and current phase angles at buses across an interconnect at a very high sampling rate. Presenting PMU data to power system operators in a format that is truly useful for them and that affords improved situation awareness (SA) and fast and accurate decision making is a particular challenge to display design. This report describes development …

Communication And Biodegradable Packaging Relationship: A Paradigm For Final Disposal, Breno Luiz Ottoni, Rafael Mattos Deus, José Alcides Gobbo Junior, Ângela Maria Grossi De Carvalho, Rosane Aparecida Gomes Battistelle
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
Solid waste generation is estimated to increase from 1.3 billion to 2.2 billion tons by 2025, causing environmental, social, and consequently public health problems. The biggest problem in this regard involves the inadequate disposal of waste, and in emerging countries like Brazil, it is sorted less waste for recycling or composting. In this context, plastic packaging is more complex due to the high polymer composition, as well as low recycling rates. Bioplastics appear as alternatives because they are mostly biodegradable. Given the various functions of packaging and a systematic review of the literature, the aim of this study was to …

Why Wikipedia Often Overlooks Stories Of Women In History, Lara Nicosia, Tamar Carroll
Articles
Wikipedia's reliance on a volunteer editing base has resulted in a gender bias both in the quantity and quality of content around women. With less than 20% of Wikipedia's editors identifying as women, only 30% of biographical entries have been written about women and entries on women tend to be shorter and more focused on relationships and family roles than entries on men. This article explores the causes of Wikipedia's gender bias and offers ways that both individuals and institutions can help improve Wikipedia's content around women.

Pheon: Practicing Problem Solving And Gaining Museum Literacy From Transmedia And Alternate Reality Games In Museums, Jes A. Koepfler, K. Tierney Sneeringer, Georgina Bath Goodlander
Journal of Interactive Humanities
The Luce Foundation Center of the Smithsonian American Art Museum ran a transmedia game, called PHEON, as an in-museum scavenger hunt-style game from October 2010 through September 2011. Players took on missions that sent them throughout the Museum's collections. From a summative evaluation of the game, we learned that PHEON supported problem solving skills, increased museum literacy, and help players connect with the Museum and its resources. Players also identified opportunities for improvement related to the game materials and its narrative. The paper offers a summary of lessons learned for others hoping to deploy an ARG or transmedia game …

Prosocial Religion And Games: Lost & Found, Owen Gottlieb, Ian Schreiber

In a time when religious legal systems are discussed without an understanding of history or context, it is more important than ever to help widen the understanding and discourse about the prosocial aspects of religious legal systems throughout history. The Lost & Found (www.lostandfoundthegame.com) game series, targeted for an audience of teens through twentysomethings in formal, learning environments, is designed to teach the prosocial aspects of medieval religious systems—specifically collaboration, cooperation, and the balancing of communal and individual/family needs. Set in Fustat (Old Cairo) in the 12th century, the first two games in the series address laws in Moses Maimonides’ …
