Analyzing And Understanding America’S Foreign Policy Decisions And Strategies Throughout The Bosnian War, Hope Rhind
Global Studies Student Scholarship
This paper explores the evolution of American foreign policy in the Balkans in the years preceding the Dayton Accords. Specifically, it examines the progression from America’s position of nonintervention and reluctance to engage to a role of leadership in ending the conflict. Key factors discussed include the inadequacy of early U.S. policies in the region, mounting pressure to end the violent conflict, the value placed on the NATO organization and relationship by the Clinton administration, and the unwavering commitment to keep American troops out of the conflict. This paper seeks to highlight the intricate interplay between international commitments and domestic …

Art has been used to create a spacious place for many people and has been a way to express themselves differently without using communication. There are many ways to do art: art can be painting, sculpture, literature, agriculture, cinema, music, or theater, no matter how individuals use it to help release emotions. Creating art as the artist or using it as the audience can help lift depression and positively heal mental health. Using art as a way of healing has represented patients and individuals …

Networks Of Care: An Autoethnography On These Innovative Products Of The Migrant Journey As Outlets For One's Development Of Citizenship, Catalina Betancur Velez
Global Studies Student Scholarship
What are the factors that influence a migrant’s understanding and development of citizenship as a sentiment in relation to the government and place in a community? Theories about citizenship emphasize the role of law and law enforcement as mediators of the dynamics between migrants and their feeling of citizenship. However, they often disregard or downplay the humanity in the development of one’s identity as a citizen or a non-citizen of a country. This paper approaches the study of citizenship through an autoethnography, which provides a unique opportunity to research and analyze the complexities of the process of one’s construction of …

Major: Global Studies and Sociology

Faculty Mentor: Dr. Trina Vithayathil, Global Studies
Caste plays a role in all aspects of Indian life. Individuals from disadvantaged castes face challenges because of institutionalized discrimination and inequality favoring caste elites. The 1950 Indian Constitution implemented a centralized system of affirmative action after discriminated castes advocated for more representation in Indian society. Reservation of government bureaucracy seats would help to change the composition and culture of institutions. My research examines the changing caste composition of the administrative bureaucracy and the factors that have supported and impeded this change. …

Residential Segregation By Caste In The Indian States Of Gujarat And Karnataka, Alicia Terrero
Global Studies Student Scholarship
Major: Global Studies and Political Science
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Trina Vithayathil, Global Studies
This project looks at the Indian states of Gujarat and Karnataka and tries to identify why Gujarat has a higher degree of residential segregation than Karnataka. One factor that could explain this is the difference in level of solidarity at the subnational level for both states. Based on social expenditure data and inequality data, we find that Karnataka has higher levels of support for policies that further the collective good of the subnational (i.e. Kannada within Karnataka) community. This higher level of subnationalism and unity across social …
How Neoliberalism Weakened Democracy In Chile, Brandon Greene
How Neoliberalism Weakened Democracy In Chile, Brandon Greene
Undergraduate Craft of Research Prize Papers
During the late twentieth century, neoliberal policy transformations were occurring in countries all over the world. In Chile, this radical change in policy removed the state from many economic spheres, which ended up hurting the Chilean people. The newly enacted neoliberal policies left the Chilean citizens in an even worse position than they had been in originally, and this suffering eroded any possibility they had of democratically participating in their government. Since the state was removing regulations with the aim of stimulating economic growth, workers were no longer promised a livable wage and they lost their opportunities to live in …

Neocolonialism, Liberation Theology And The Nicaraguan Revolution, John Hindley
Neocolonialism, Liberation Theology And The Nicaraguan Revolution, John Hindley
Undergraduate Craft of Research Prize Papers
This paper will attempt to answer an important question regarding the study of revolutions in developing countries: how does Liberation Theology address the problems of neocolonialism that plagues the Latin American continent? The analysis will use the Central American nation, Nicaragua, and its Sandinista revolution as a country case. This question is important to the study because it helps to understand the extent or the kind of an impact religion has on revolutions. In Latin America, the population is majority Roman Catholic. Due to this, the hierarchy of the Church and the laity has had a certain influence on the …
France And The Community Of Six: The Schuman Declaration To The Treaties Of Rome, Daniel Gagnon
France And The Community Of Six: The Schuman Declaration To The Treaties Of Rome, Daniel Gagnon
Undergraduate Craft of Research Prize Papers
This paper investigates France’s role during the first decade of European integration, and in particular the initiatives of Jean Monnet and Robert Schuman which led to the creation of the European Communities. Monnet and Schuman began the modern process of uniting Europe with the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, but the process of integration faced its strongest opposition within France itself and the movement had its first setback in 1954 when the French National Assembly rejected the proposed European Defense Community. Nevertheless, European integration continued, and after the subsequent French election, France rebuilt momentum for further European …

Toward A Radical Integral Humanism: Macintyre’S Continuing Marxism, Jeffery L. Nicholas
Jeffery L Nicholas
I argue that we must read Alasdair MacIntyre’s mature work through a Marxist lens. I begin by discussing his argument that we must choose which God to worship on principles of justice, which, it turns out, are ones given to us by God. I contend that this argument entails that we must see Mac- Intyre’s early Marxist commitments as given to him by God, and, therefore, that he has never abandoned them in his turn to Thomistic-Aristotelianism. I examine his reading of Marx, with its emphasis on the concept of alienation as a Christian concept, and explain how this reading …

The Arab Spring, with a call for a more democratic system of governance, was a phenomenon that will continue to shape the political and social spheres of the Arab world for generations to come. This paper focuses on answering the question of to what extent Islamist political parties, having recently won majorities within the preliminary governments in the two countries, will use an ever-changing Islam religion within the formation of their fledgling governments and constitutions.
The Rise Of Religious Parties In Turkey And India, Hannah Donovan
The Rise Of Religious Parties In Turkey And India, Hannah Donovan
Annual Celebration of Student Scholarship and Creativity
This project examines the rise of religious parties in secular democracies. In both Turkey and India, religious parties have enjoyed electoral successes (and failures). While religion is a significant issue to voters, it is oftentimes the persistence of economic problems that leads to the rise and fall of religious parties. The impact of coalition governments, change in political rhetoric, and relationship between government and religion in both countries are also analyzed and contrasted.

Human Rights Policy Paper: Rape As A Tactic Of War, Sarah Fitzgerald
Global Studies Student Scholarship
This paper reports on rape used as a tactic of war, outlining the scope of the problem and introducing policy options to address the issue on a global scale. Policy options targeted at relief services include increasing direct aid through funding fistula surgeries, building rural hospitals, and providing skills training for women awaiting surgery. Additional policy options addressing the problem at its root include legislative changes to stop impunity at the International Criminal Court, revising the Convention on Genocide to include sex and gender, utilization of devices such as the Rape aXe, and changing the culture of misogyny through educational …

The Organization Of American States (Oas) In Rhetoric And Reality, Elizabeth Marie Moore
Philosophy Student Scholarship
The purpose of this study is to examine how well the countries in the Western Hemisphere translate Organization of American States’ (OAS) resolutions into actual meaningful legislation, and how international discourse influences, or does not, domestic policy. This study will utilize the data program QDA Miner in order to better analyze texts of agreements and treaties put forth by the OAS, and to highlight the correlation between different types of rhetoric and meaningful member state action. Data will be gathered primarily from the OAS’ own data bases and compiled into the QDA software for analysis. This analysis will allow the …

Building The Foundation For Rhode Island Immigrant Assistance Database: A Brief Study Of The Communication And Collaboration Among Rhode Island Social Service Agencies, Matthew Friedman
Global Studies Student Scholarship
In the state of Rhode Island, numerous non-profit organizations, businesses and state government departments provide a variety of services to the immigrant population. Among these agencies, each has different levels of communication, collaboration and knowledge of the other organizations operating in Rhode Island. Collaborating with the International Institute of Rhode Island, a non-profit immigration agency located in Providence, my initial goal was the creation of the Rhode Island Immigrant Assistance Database (RIIAD), a simple and informative web page detailing the services, mission statement and address of the agencies that assist immigrants. Of the more than seventy organizations invited to the …
Town-Gown Relations At Providence College: Perspectives And Interactions Between Students And The Local Community, Joe Paola
Global Studies Student Scholarship
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and comment on the relationships that exist between Providence College students and the local Smith Hill‐Elmhurst community. In conducting my research I concentrated mainly on the nuanced perceptions that the students and the local residents have of each other. My main interest was to see how the students defined themselves in relation to the outside community, and in discovering how much their relationship is based upon these perceptions. At the same time, I also aimed to find out what the locals’ opinions were on the place of the students; namely, if they …

Intrastate Conflict Resolution: Case Studies And Applications For A Globalized World, Michael Kriner
Global Studies Student Scholarship
The nature of conflict around the world has changed since the end of World War II. Since that time, there has been an increase in the number of intrastate conflicts, and these conflicts have become more violent and deadly. Since many of them involve questions of identity, the traditional methods of conflict resolution typically cannot be applied. Many intrastate conflicts also involve third-party interventions which add another dimension to the conflict. This paper will address the changing nature of conflict and the rise of intrastate conflict and resolution by including explorations and analysis of the conflicts in Rwanda and the …

English language learners (ELLs) are the fastest growing group of students in the United States. The purpose of this research is to help better understand the personal experiences of these students in their journey to learn English while still maintaining their Spanish roots. Much research has been done on a large scale to identify the successes and shortcomings of the American education system in supporting these immigrant ELLs. This project, however, focuses directly on the personal experience of the bilingual student in the mainstream classroom and the influence of their home and community life on the assimilation process. This case …
