A Workers' Paradise: Re-Integrating Newfoundland Into Colonial American History, Elena Hynes
A Workers' Paradise: Re-Integrating Newfoundland Into Colonial American History, Elena Hynes
Electronic Theses & Dissertations
The island of Newfoundland is conspicuous in colonial British and North American histories, most particularly and paradoxically, in its absence, a state of affairs which this study aims to help address. Multiple factors, including a paucity of documentary sources and various historiographic trends, have traditionally contributed to Newfoundland’s marginalization within colonial historical narratives. However, developments in recent years have made Newfoundland’s potential integration into the broader colonial dialogue more feasible including the advent of the Atlantic perspective, the expansion of available sources, and the work of multiple regional historians who have challenged enduring historiographic trends characterizing Newfoundland colonial settlements as …

The COVID-19 pandemic taught librarians that we needed to up our game of providing access to needed resources to serve patrons’ needs even while our physical buildings were shuttered last year. Some vendors and publishers offered deals to libraries to convert their print book purchases or journal subscriptions to online; however, not all libraries had funds to do this. Other publishers offered free access to part or all of their resources to libraries, and some are continuing to do so even though some libraries have returned to more normal operations. Open access resources have been around for years, and allow …

Pittsburg State University (PSU) Library Services needed to transform their longest ongoing traditional program, University Authors Reception, in 2020. This event honors authors and creators at PSU by showcasing their publications from the year. Traditionally, this celebration allowed for the honorees and community to engage in discussion about their works, enjoy light refreshments, and celebrate their accomplishments with family and friends. With the uncertainty of COVID-19 and related safety protocols, PSU librarians took the opportunity to reshape elements of the event to ensure a focus on …

Immunization Communication In ‘Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood’: Inoculation Theory, Health Messaging, And Children’S Entertainment Television, Josh Compton, Alicia Mason

Entertainment education research has shown that television programs can communicate important health information to television viewers. Much of this research focuses on mass media effects (e.g., behavioral intention of viewers, post-viewing; attitudinal change, post-viewing). We review para-social and para-proxemics literature to describe the viewing context and then offer a detailed rhetorical analysis of immunization messaging on the children’s television program, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” arguing that, aptly, Fred Rogers’ rhetorical framing mirrored that of the inoculation theory of resistance to influence, presenting “weak” challenges to his young viewers to help …

The author developed a pre-education survey that included demographics, multiple-choice questions, and open-ended questions to assess the nurses' knowledge …
