Intolerance Of Uncertainty, Worry, And Problem-Solving: Implications For Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Melissa Patrick Dec 2016

Intolerance Of Uncertainty, Worry, And Problem-Solving: Implications For Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Melissa Patrick

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This study was conducted to examine the correlations between Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), worry, intolerance of uncertainty (IU), and problem-solving. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire for DSM-IV (GADQ-IV), the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (PSWQ), the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale (IUS), and the Problem-Solving Inventory (PSI) were used to assess the relationship between GAD, worry, IU, and problem-solving. While the GADQ-IV, PSWQ, and the IUS assessed generalized anxiety, worry, and intolerance of uncertainty as single constructs, the PSI assessed problem-solving in terms of problem-solving confidence, approach avoidance style, and personal control. Data of 86 students in general psychology classes at Pittsburg …

Does Attentional Slippage Conform To A Simple Gradient?, Katie Rennie Dec 2016

Does Attentional Slippage Conform To A Simple Gradient?, Katie Rennie

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

The following graduate thesis describes research designed to examine flanker interference at varying spatial distances from a target stimulus. Traditionally, much evidence has accumulated that the distribution of visual attention conforms to a monotonically decreasing gradient in which distractors at the farthest separations produce the least interference (e.g., Erikson & St. James, 1986). Different from this traditional conceptualization, Müller, Mollenhauer, Rösler, and Kleinschmidt (2005) describe what they termed a Mexican hat distribution of visual attention showing flankers at an intermediate zone produce less interference. The current study is designed to investigate whether flanker interference declines monotonically with distance or follows …

The Psychological Impacts Of Engaging In Creative Work, Jeanine Kunshek Dec 2016

The Psychological Impacts Of Engaging In Creative Work, Jeanine Kunshek

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Although the literature investigating creativity is extensive, this research is designed to address deficits in knowledge regarding the first-hand accounts of individuals who engage in creative work and the motivations and gratifications they draw from those experiences. This study employs the use of in vivo analysis to articulate and explore the benefits and disadvantages of individuals who pursue careers in five creative industries identified by Taylor and Littleton (2012). Based on qualitative data gathered from focus groups and interviews, most frequent benefits include social connections, cognitive challenges, boosted esteem, communication, and personal and professional development. Disadvantages include time demands, lack …

Stigmatizing Attitudes Towards Men And Women Combat Veterans With Combat Related Ptsd, Heather L. Caldwell Dec 2016

Stigmatizing Attitudes Towards Men And Women Combat Veterans With Combat Related Ptsd, Heather L. Caldwell

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Veterans with PTSD experience stigma and discrimination. The extent to which women combat veterans with PTSD may experience stigma and discrimination has yet to be investigated. This is critical given the increasing number of women veterans exposed to combat and combat trauma. Level of familiarity may affect stigmatizing beliefs. Gender may also affect stigmatizing beliefs. To assess this, 126 undergraduate students (men, n = 69) were randomly assigned to view videos of a man or woman veteran describing combat experience and their PTSD symptoms. Participants completed questionnaires assessing PTSD symptoms, level of familiarity with veterans, and stigmatizing attitudes toward the …

Decreasing Cost Associated Medication Nonadherence, Shawn E. Raymond Nov 2016

Decreasing Cost Associated Medication Nonadherence, Shawn E. Raymond

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

An Abstract of the Scholarly Project by

Shawn E. Raymond

Medication cost is a major contributor for patient medication nonadherence. Take in the fact that a large population lives in poverty, many cannot afford to pay the retail prices associated with purchasing their medications. By incorporating wholesale medications into a charitable health clinic, the reduced cost of medications for treatment of both acute and chronic illnesses could be passed on to those in need thereby decreasing cost associated medication nonadherence. Nurse Practitioners in the state of Kansas are not afforded the privilege to purchase, repackage and distribute or resell wholesale …

Images Of Alzheimer’S: A Visual Analysis Of The Imagery Used To Globally Market Alzheimer’S Services Online, Elizabeth Spencer, Alicia Mason

Faculty Submissions

Currently more than 46 million people are living with dementia globally (ADI, 2015). The World Health Organization (WHO) reports the worldwide population of persons 60 years of age and older will more than triple between 2000 and 2050 to two billion. The concept of Western patients receiving long-term dementia care in foreign countries is a new and emerging phenomenon (Gray, 2013; Pomareda, 2014; Wegerer, 2014). This study examines the visual images within Alzheimer’s care facility websites (n=105) and uses a cross cultural comparison lens to contrast differences in patient representations and treatment facilities. The goal of this study is to …

Kansas City, Missouri's Municipal Impact On Housing Segregation, Robert Neil Cooper May 2016

Kansas City, Missouri's Municipal Impact On Housing Segregation, Robert Neil Cooper

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

Throughout Kansas City Missouri’s history, the parks and boulevards system, restrictive covenants, real estate and lending practices, urban redevelopment, public housing, and racial steering have contributed to the establishment and continuance of housing segregation. Although historians have studied these main types of housing segregation and the federal government’s actions thoroughly, little work exists to show how Kansas City, Missouri’s municipal government has influenced housing segregation. By examining Kansas City’s municipal response to the aforementioned types of segregation, it is clear that city officials have taken steps to both aid and discourage segregationist housing practices. Although municipal agencies, like the Commission …

Creating Green Open Access To Institutional Scholarship Using Digital Commons, Deborah L. White, Yumi Ohira

Faculty Submissions

Has your institution mandated an Institutional Repository for open access? Do you feel intimidated by working with two digital repositories simultaneously? We will share our success and experience of working with two repositories with a small staff at two small universities in rural Kansas.

Both Pittsburg State University (PSU) and Fort Hays State University (FHSU) currently use CONTENTdm (CDM) as their primary digital repository. In 2015 both PSU and FHSU purchased and launched BePress Digital Commons (DC), a more robust repository. If you see global discoverability, unlimited storage, …

Evolving Roles Of Librarians: Juggling Print And Electronic Collections While Making Meaningful Connections, Jorge Leon, Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

The traditional role of librarians has long been to support the university's needs through instruction, collection development, and research assistance. Pittsburg State University's challenge has been to balance our print and electronic collections at a university whose programs sometimes do not draw enough on library resources while also creating meaningful connections with students and faculty. In an effort to increase the relevancy of our collections and create meaningful connections with the university community, we have been actively creating opportunities for patrons to create content in the library. This has allowed users to engage with library resources and services in a …
