Child Abuse And School Performance, Rachel M. Smith
Child Abuse And School Performance, Rachel M. Smith
Scholars Day Conference
Data reports that child abuse impacts a large number of children. Because of this, a child's learning experience can be negatively impacted. Even though the percentage might be relatively small, when looking at the collective number on a national level, it means that a large population of children are affected.

Scholars Day Conference
HIV is a critical problem among the incarcerated population. As of 2014, African Americans disproportionately made up 2.3 million of the 6.8 million correctional population. People of the correctional population are more susceptible to a decrease of CD4 cells (cells that kill the HIV virus). African Americans are at an elevated risk of HIV vs. everyone else in the correctional population.

Who Is More Motivated To Answer Survey Questions: Men Or Women?, Anthony Jenkins Jr.
Scholars Day Conference
There are a wide range of factors that are considered motivators. Each individual is motivated differently. Before starting, I suspected that women would be more motivated to take this survey than men. This was based on the research I did involving the different ways males are motivated versus females.

Les Femmes Capables: A Supplementary Curriculum Teaching Survival English To Female Senegalese Ells, Abigail Morse
Scholars Day Conference
My thesis examines the contrast between a Muslim man’s opportunity to learn English versus his wife's, who, in a traditional context, would be limited by social obligations to her home and family's welfare. I look specifically at the roles of Muslim Senegalese women. I provide basic cultural context and teaching methods to ESL teachers. I also provide basic vocabulary lists and lesson plans about important situations such as "going to the doctor." The language needed to complete daily tasks is not taught in general language classes, and my goal is to change that.
Protective Services Or Protecting The Service? An Analysis Of The United States Child Protection System, Margaret Ann Donnell
Protective Services Or Protecting The Service? An Analysis Of The United States Child Protection System, Margaret Ann Donnell
Scholars Day Conference
In its recent history, the United States child protection system has proven to fulfill a desperate need within our nation regarding the welfare and well-being of our nation’s children. An overview of the child protection system’s development shows tremendous progress has been made. And yet, what was created to be a solution to the growing number of children experiencing maltreatment in the form of abandonment, abuse, and/or neglect, has potentially become the very problem. Statistics illustrate just how serious the situation has and will continue to become if something is not done. Serious concerns have arisen and remain, and individuals …

How Social Media Affect College Students' Relationships, De'ja Smiley
Scholars Day Conference
Technology continues to advance, and so does social networking. The more social networking advances the less face to face interactions are held and the more conversations through electronic screens and apps are held. There are several factors contributing to the changes in communication amongst college students who generally already spend a large amount of time using technology for academic purposes.
Poverty In The Third World: High Population Birth Rates, Jammie Cush
Poverty In The Third World: High Population Birth Rates, Jammie Cush
Scholars Day Conference
Poverty can be defined as the state of being extremely poor. Nearly one half of the world’s population — more than 3 billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day. Furthermore, more than 1.3 billion live in extreme poverty, living on less than $1.25 a day. There have been numerous efforts from major Non-Governmental Organizations and International Governmental Organizations such as the United Nations, who attempted to implement The Millennium Development Goal in the 1990s, which was a goal that consisted of 8 large objectives. One goal was the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger. The UN set …
An Overview Of Foster Care, Rachel Smith
An Overview Of Foster Care, Rachel Smith
Scholars Day Conference
Foster Care is something that needs to be studied, especially as it has become such a popular topic in recent years. My thesis paper takes a look at the current foster care system on a national and state level, while also looking at the statistics behind children in the system. Through multiple programs in Arkansas, there are resources for foster families and even resources on how to get involved. There is Christian obligation to get plugged in and to serve.

Effects Of Sound Symbolism In Names On Personality Perception, Josephine N. Collins, Victoria A. Martin, Makayla H. Allen
Scholars Day Conference
We investigated effects of sound symbolism in names on personality perception. Participants were randomly assigned to a group that either had invented or non-invented round or sharp names. They were asked to fill out a BFI-10 and a BSRI-12 questionnaire for five different names followed by reading 10 descriptions of personality traits and circling either a round name or a sharp name that fit the description best. Results showed that sound type present in names affected perceptions of Extraversion and that name and sound type affected perceptions of Femininity. These results provide evidence of sound symbolic associations present in names.
