Our panel will present results of a semester-long study on coffee's presence in our Writing and Communication Center and argue for the importance of ephemera in understanding how individuals experience their time in the center. Adding on to the existing discussions about space and writing centers, this presentation will address what has been lacking from the ongoing writing center conversation about coffee—until now.

In this workshop, participants will gain a detailed sense of the benefits for writing center certification via SWCA. After reviewing the process for certification design, current SWCA Research & Development committee members will guide workshop participants through a series of brainstorming activities to help directors begin to develop materials for application packets. The goal of this workshop is to help demystify the process of application, to prompt reflection on materials that centers might already have, and to encourage participation in the SWCA certification program.

The presenters -- directors and a student-leader of two writing and communication centers -- will take the ongoing conversation of student engagement and writing centers in a new direction. Building on the conversation Kail, Gillespie, and Hughes initiated on assessing peer tutor alumni, presenters will examine how centers create the types of learning experiences that engage staff members within their centers, universities, and communities. Using student engagement research as a foundation, the two centers developed “engagement surveys” that measured how working in the writing center influenced their tutors’ experiences as students. Peace education scholars and practitioners continue to call for the centering of the voices and lived experiences of marginalized students (Bajaj, Ghaffar-Kucker and Desai, 2016). Situated in this urgent tradition, this presentation presents data from focus groups with young Muslim community members in S. Florida in the post-9/11 era. As a religious and ethnic minority group in South Florida, Muslim students would seem to be uniquely vulnerable in this time of rising xenophobia and Islamophobia. Although course-embedded programs (such as writing fellows, writing center fellows, or writing associates) have been examined at single institutions in terms of training, faculty support, and assessment, writing center researchers have rarely studied these programs across multiple sites. Our panel provides results from a large-scale multi-institution survey of students, faculty, and staffers in classes with course-embedded writing support programs, at four SWCA institutions that differ in terms of size and mission. This project and research results showcase the perceived value and impact of course-embedded, peer-to-peer writing support.

The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if and how the Awakenings Equine Assisted Learning program was effective at improving the professionalism, confidence, communication skills and adaptability of students preparing for careers as Anesthesiologist Assistants. Extensive polydrug use puts nightclub attendees at high risk for health problems, including HIV/ STI; mental distress; and drug dependence.

There is pervasive resistance to participation in formal interventions. Club scene participants tend to be suspicious of or disinterested in drug use and sexual risk prevention messages delivered by governmental or health authorities.

Efficacious interventions to reduce sexual risk, drug use, and related consequences for this population are not apparent in the literature.

Poets and memoirists have known for millennia that the written word can clarify, beautify and heal, as the students of Room 5C often discover. Writing, of course, is also a key tool of peaceful social change. As such, the written word can be where personal and social change, structure and agency, meet in the classroom. Yet how often is this power leveraged in our juvenile detention home schools? How often do we ask juvenile offenders to be critical participants, even leaders, in their communities? Freire would remind us that the problems juvenile offender-students face are themselves the best curriculum.

My paper will explore reggae dancehall album covers and the seductive yet dismissive ways in which bodies pose for the camera while concurrently seeming to ignore it. What accounts for this intrigue with the camera as well as an apparent repulsion towards it? Within the arena of national beauty politics, how do we account for those Caribbean bodies that are positioned for the global camera?
