My name is Daardi Sizemore Mixon and I’m the University Archivist at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

While I am presenting today, this project (and presentation) would not be possible without the work of my colleagues, Adam Smith, Heidi Southworth, and Anne Stenzel. My presentation today is based on one we provided to our University Administration earlier this summer.

Today, I will be providing an overview of our project; a little about our project management; some project outcomes; and some final thoughts on the project.

Look For The Helpers: Public Libraries And The Homeless: A Literature Review, Kellian Clink

Library Services Publications

I wanted you to have a narrative to accompany my presentation. My name is Kellian Clink and I have been a librarian for 34 years, 2 of them at a public library in Geneva, Illinois. I love coming to PNLA every year and try to concoct something that would be of interest to you. I am from Wyoming so I love coming West every year and will miss being with you in person this year.

Last year, everyone was talking about the homeless in their libraries so this year, I thought I would outline some of the findings from research …

Modernizing Minnesota's Guardianship Statute: Moving Away From Guardianship To Supported Decision-Making, Anna Ely, Madalyn Johnson, Bethany Mueller, Taylor Steckelberg Apr 2020

Modernizing Minnesota's Guardianship Statute: Moving Away From Guardianship To Supported Decision-Making, Anna Ely, Madalyn Johnson, Bethany Mueller, Taylor Steckelberg

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

While guardianship is an important option for people with significant cognitive challenges and high support needs, the process is burdensome, expensive, and most importantly restricts the civil liberties of individuals. Together, we must modernize Minnesota’s guardianship statute and invest in Supported Decision-Making to protect the fundamental rights of the person, increase self-determination, and improve life outcomes.

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

There are 853 cities in Minnesota, and only two have enacted protections for LGBTQ+ people from the harmful practice of conversion therapy. All Minnesotans deserve access to safe, ethical, affirming, and evidence-based mental health care.

Painted Nails: The Gender(Ed) Performance Of Queer Sexuality, Justin Rudnick Apr 2020

Painted Nails: The Gender(Ed) Performance Of Queer Sexuality, Justin Rudnick

Communication Studies Department Publications

In this essay, I interrogate my own experiences performing my queer identity through my painted nails. I attest to the ways queer bodies might performatively challenge and/or reinforce rigid norms of sexuality through mundane performances of (gendered) identity. To accomplish this, I engage in an autoethnographic exploration of queer performativity. I recount and analyze a series of anecdotes that illustrate how performances of queer identity in everyday life are accomplished—and policed—in mundane situations. In turn, I reflexively investigate the ways in which these performances situate me within a nexus of aesthetic, embodied, and ethical social interaction and performative resistance. I …

Police Social Work In Minnesota: Starting The Conversation, Jenny Ellsworth, Taylor Fish, Alison Niesen, Natalia Pitts Apr 2020

Police Social Work In Minnesota: Starting The Conversation, Jenny Ellsworth, Taylor Fish, Alison Niesen, Natalia Pitts

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Even with enhanced police officer training focused on improving responses to mental illness, chemical dependency, and other crisis-related calls, police officers remain ill-equipped to serve as trained mental health professionals. Officers respond to these service-related calls more frequently than crime-related calls, which is why community partnerships between police officers and social workers are needed to promote the safety and well-being of people in crisis.

Affordable & Accessible Housing For All Minnesotans: Equitable Investment In Housing For People With Disabilities, Nabiha Ali, Jennifer Gutierrez, Monde Solomon, Natalia Marchan-Gallardo, Nancy M. Fitzsimons Apr 2020

Affordable & Accessible Housing For All Minnesotans: Equitable Investment In Housing For People With Disabilities, Nabiha Ali, Jennifer Gutierrez, Monde Solomon, Natalia Marchan-Gallardo, Nancy M. Fitzsimons

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Without ensuring that housing is also accessible, Minnesota’s efforts to increase affordable housing is leaving out a segment of our community, Minnesotan’s with disabilities. Minnesota must commit to ensuing that every man, every woman, every child in Minnesota, without exception, has a safe, affordable, dignified and ACCESSIBLE place to call home.

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

The well-being of Minnesota’s children and families is negatively impacted by punitive practices. Investing in programs that divert parents from the criminal justice system ensures parental accountability while contributing to healthy children, families, and communities.

Achieving Equity For African American Children And Families In Minnesota's Child Welfare System: Keeping Families Together, Abigail Kamm, Quincey Krein, Lindsay Simon, Kayla Wolff Apr 2020

Achieving Equity For African American Children And Families In Minnesota's Child Welfare System: Keeping Families Together, Abigail Kamm, Quincey Krein, Lindsay Simon, Kayla Wolff

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Despite awareness of the disparities in our child protection system for African American children and their families, including increased removal from parental care and placement in non-family foster care, Minnesota has failed to take action to remedy this inequity. Adoption of the provisions in the African American Family Preservation Act is an essential first step toward creating an equitable and accountable child welfare system for African American children and their families.

Equity And Justice For People With Traumatic Brain Injury In Minnesota's Criminal Justice System: Achieving Effectiveness, Efficiency And Equity, Megan Bryant, Donica Doran, Karen Lacroix, Beth Winterfeldt

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is a silent epidemic in Minnesota’s correctional system. People with TBI in corrections have significant needs related to their TBI that are not being met. These unmet needs threaten their personal safety and the safety of others in correctional settings and society at large; and threaten their ability to maintain their status as productive members of their communities upon release, negatively affecting the well-being of entire communities.

Archon To Aspace: Adventures In Archives Migration, Adam Stephen Guy Smith, Heidi J. Southworth, Tom Tran, Daniel Vang

Library Services Publications

In August 2018, the University Archives and Southern Minnesota Historical Center at Minnesota State University, Mankato decided to migrate our finding aids and collection information from a hidden ARCHON database to a publicly available ArchivesSpace instance. This time sensitive decision was made with no budget available and in the midst of both a library system migration (Aleph to Alma/Primo) and an entire University website migration that affected us more than we initially thought. Three migrations is no big deal, right? This session will talk about our migration from design to implementation to “Oops! Where did that go?” We will share …

Norming The Peterson Assertiveness Questionnaire, Haley Peterson, Carrie Lewis Miller Jan 2020

Norming The Peterson Assertiveness Questionnaire, Haley Peterson, Carrie Lewis Miller

IT Solutions Publications

An assertiveness measure was developed based on the Mind Tools framework for fostering assertive behaviour (‘How to be Assertive,’ n.d.). Previous research supports the elements within the Mind Tools framework, but none has been conducted on Mind Tools specifically. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to first verify the construct, and then test the questionnaire based on that framework for its psychometric properties as well as norm the measure. Questions developed ranged from passive in nature to aggressive with varying informants. The construct was validated through a Principle Components Analysis. The measure was normed using pilot testing and a …

College Student Perceptions Of Professional Development Through Sport Management Club Participation, Emily J. Houghton, Erica J. Zonder, Brenda A. Riemer, Keith Christy Jan 2020

College Student Perceptions Of Professional Development Through Sport Management Club Participation, Emily J. Houghton, Erica J. Zonder, Brenda A. Riemer, Keith Christy

Human Performance Department Publications

Background Literature

Traditionally, college students engaged in learning within the classroom setting. Research indicates that students can also learn in extracurricular activities such as internships and student clubs (Brown & Johnson, 2018). While research in the field of sport management has focused on the role of internships in professional development (e.g. Hayes & Mudrick, 2018; Young & Baker, 2004), less research has focused on the role of sport management clubs and how club participation may enhance a club member’s professional development. In addition, little research has focused on barriers that prevent students from joining.

Purpose

Latinx – African American Relations: Understanding The Perceptions Of Faculty, Administrators And Students In Two College Campuses, Nadarajan Sethuraju, Luis A. Posas

Sociology Department Publications

This study examines the relationship between Latinxs and African Americans in two mid-size colleges located in the southwestern region of the United States. An empirical study was conducted including students, faculty, and administrators using a survey as the main methodological technique. Guided by the group position model advocated by Herber Blumer, this study found evidence for the prevalence of intra-group associations and group competition for access to resources. In this regard, the study documents the existing perception that African Americans have better access to resources in the two college campuses which supports the zero-sum hypothesis favoring members of this group. …

How Well Is Urban Agriculture Growing In The Southern United States? Trends And Issues From The Perspective Of Urban Planners Regulating Urban Agriculture, Russell J. Fricano, Carla Davis Jan 2020

How Well Is Urban Agriculture Growing In The Southern United States? Trends And Issues From The Perspective Of Urban Planners Regulating Urban Agriculture, Russell J. Fricano, Carla Davis

Urban and Regional Studies Institute Publications

In this study, we evaluate urban agriculture trends in 55 cities in the Southern United States. Our research is important for three reasons. First, as the geographic scope of urban agriculture research is limited mostly to Northeast and West Coast cities, we focus on the South, the fastest-growing U.S. Census region. Second, despite rapid growth, this region has also experienced the highest rate of poverty and food insecurity. Third, we surveyed urban planners who regulate and monitor urban agriculture sites, develop urban agriculture policies and programs, and advise local decision-makers. The study documents Southern urban agriculture changes between 2000 and …
