Traces Of Desire And Fantasy : The Government-Generated Discourse On Technology In Post-Handover Hong Kong, Sze Chung Chow Sep 2004

Traces Of Desire And Fantasy : The Government-Generated Discourse On Technology In Post-Handover Hong Kong, Sze Chung Chow

Theses & Dissertations

Information technology almost became the savior for Hong Kong in the process of recovering from the Asian financial crisis immediately after the Handover. The claims to establish and further the development of information technology were made against a certain perception of Hong Kong, in which the place in past decades had indulged in the wrong direction of labour-intensive, cut-throat production in the manufacturing industries and bubble-like speculation in the real-estate sector, and against a certain vision of the future, with more and more competition in the age of globalization, neo-liberal economies, and so on.

This thesis demonstrates, firstly, how the …

A Risk-Averse Newsvendor Model With Pricing Consideration, Zuobin Ye Sep 2004

A Risk-Averse Newsvendor Model With Pricing Consideration, Zuobin Ye

Lingnan Theses and Dissertations (MPhil & PhD)

A decision maker who is facing a random demand for a perishable product, such as newspapers, decides how many units to order for a single selling period. This single-period inventory problem is often referred to as the "classic newsvendor problem", in which the selling price is fixed, the order must be made before the selling period, and the decision maker is risk-neutral. If the decision maker orders too many (overage), the inventory cost will be too high. If the decision maker orders too few (underage), the potential profit will be lost. The optimal order quantity is a balance between the …

A Study Of Life Events And Psychological Well-Being Among Older Persons In Hong Kong : The Role Of Self-Esteem, Coping And Locus Of Control, Kwok Hung, Billy She

Theses & Dissertations

The present study investigates to what extent the life events, which includes self-perceived health, self-esteem, internal locus of control and coping effectiveness as indicators, could explain the occurrence of positive affect and depression amongst these elderly persons. The relationships between life events, self-esteem-level, internal locus of control, coping effectiveness, and psychological well-being among older persons (aged 60 or above) in Hong Kong are examined. Eight pilot study cases have been carried out in order to test for the validity of the research instrument. One hundred and three elderly respondents were successfully interviewed face-to-face from three main estates in Tseung Kwan …

Consideration Of Protective Legislation On Family And Residential Care For Older Persons In Hong Kong, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Chao Li Jul 2004

Consideration Of Protective Legislation On Family And Residential Care For Older Persons In Hong Kong, Cheung Ming, Alfred Chan, Chao Li

APIAS Working Paper 工作論文

Older persons, like all members of any society, have the right to be free from mistreatment at family care and residential care. Furthermore, older persons are the special collectiveness, different from children or other adults, so elder abuse or neglect is a more complicated issue. Protective legislation aiming at protecting older persons from possible mistreatment as one of the various intervention approaches is essential. By analyzing the pros and cons in applying the legislation on institutional care (i.e. family and residential places) in Hong Kong, for three case examples, plus referencing to China’s experience, the goals and contents of the …

Reading Filipina Migrant Workers In Hong Kong : Tracing A Feminist And Cultural Politics Of Transformation, Aida Jean Manipon

Lingnan Theses and Dissertations (MPhil & PhD)

For Filipino migrant workers , the journey overseas in search of contractual employment marks a profound turning point in their lives. It registers the crossing of spatial and cultural borders that leads to the shifting of terrains from which they make sense of their selves and the world of ‘others.’ It signifies a rupture in time that alters their sense of history, giving shape to new vantage points from which they reflect on the past and project an imagination of future. This research explores the question of how Filipina domestic workers in Hong Kong make sense of their experiences as …

Macroeconomic Instability In Hong Kong : Internal And External Factors, Yue Ma, Y.Y. Kueh, Raymond C.W. Ng Mar 2004

Macroeconomic Instability In Hong Kong : Internal And External Factors, Yue Ma, Y.Y. Kueh, Raymond C.W. Ng

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

The paper examines the sources of macroeconomic instability in Hong Kong under the linked exchange rate regime. A prototype IS-LM model is estimated, with adaptation to the restrictions posed by the US dollar peg that has been in place in Hong Kong since 1983. Among all external and internal factors of instability examined, local Hong Kong interest rate is found to have a dominant effect on real GDP, price and money supply. Over the long run, however, the US interest rate is the driving force behind the Hong Kong interest rate. Foreign inflation also affects Hong Kong's domestic demand and …

Exchange Rate Regimes And The Twin Economies Of Hong Kong And Singapore, Yue Ma, Y. Y. Kueh, Raymond, C. W. Ng Mar 2004

Exchange Rate Regimes And The Twin Economies Of Hong Kong And Singapore, Yue Ma, Y. Y. Kueh, Raymond, C. W. Ng

CAPS Working Paper Series

Based on a small, open-economy IS-LM prototype model, this paper examines the sources of macroeconomic instabilities in Hong Kong and Singapore operating under two similar cu訂ency board arrangements (CBAs). The empirical findings suggest that in general both extemal and intemal factors contribute to the macroeconomic volatilities observed in the two economies. Interestingly, whilst in Hong Kong interest rate is the single most important factor accounting for the variation in real GDP, price level and money supply, in most cases in Singapore the volatilities of these three macro variables cannot be attributed to a significant single facto r. Interest rate in …

China's Domestic And International Policies On Global Warming : Explanations And Assessment, Paul G. Harris, Hongyuan Yu Feb 2004

China's Domestic And International Policies On Global Warming : Explanations And Assessment, Paul G. Harris, Hongyuan Yu

CAPS Working Paper Series

Global warming and resulting climate change present the world with major and potentially devastating challenges. China is among the countries that will suffer the effects of climate change. Although its per captia emissions of pollutants causing global warming remain relatively low compared to the world’s richest countries, China is now the second largest global polluter, and in coming decades it will overtake the United States as the world’s largest polluter of the global atmosphere. How China responds to this problem has profound implications for its people, its neighbors and the world. China has joined with other countries in debating this …

Chinese Environmental Attitudes And Climate Change : Survey Findings On Precursors Of China's Domestic And International Policies On Global Warming, Paul G. Harris Jan 2004

Chinese Environmental Attitudes And Climate Change : Survey Findings On Precursors Of China's Domestic And International Policies On Global Warming, Paul G. Harris

CAPS Working Paper Series

Attitudes toward the environment in China are ambiguous at best and anti-environment at worst. These attitudes are indicators of how the Chinese view the natural environment and how they are likely to behave toward it and respond to efforts to protect it—whether they will practice "green" development and preservation of nature, or instead contribute to practices that are turning China's air, land and water brown (or even black) with pollution. These attitudes are also important precursors to individual Chinese behaviours and the policies and actions of the Chinese government to combat global warming and climate change. As such, attitudes toward …

Globalization, Unemployment, And Excess Capacity : A Model And A Conjecture, Lok Sang Ho Jan 2004

Globalization, Unemployment, And Excess Capacity : A Model And A Conjecture, Lok Sang Ho

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

Using a theoretical model with an industrial world trading with a developing world and assuming no impediment to capital flows, it is shown that an abundant supply of unskilled labor will render real wages for the unskilled close to the subsistence level and will result in excess capacity. The rate of return for traditional manufacturing investment at the margin will decline so funds will seek to invest in financial assets and real property, boosting their prices. Under reasonable assumptions about the income elasticity and the price elasticity of demand for manufacturing products in rich and poor countries, it is shown …

Privatization Of Public Housing : Did It Cause The 1998 Recession In Hong Kong?, Lok Sang Ho, Wai Chung, Gary Wong Jan 2004

Privatization Of Public Housing : Did It Cause The 1998 Recession In Hong Kong?, Lok Sang Ho, Wai Chung, Gary Wong

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

This paper finds evidence that a public housing privatization program produced adverse effects on housing transactions and the economy in Hong Kong. A scheme announced in December 1997, offering tenants an opportunity to buy their units at deeply discounted prices, reduced public housing tenants’ bids for private homes and adversely affected home transactions. This effect is more pronounced than the effects of the Asian Financial Crisis. An effect on housing prices is also indirectly demonstrated though a demonstration that a structural break in the housing price relationship occurred at the time the privatization program is introduced. Declines in housing prices …

Report On The Study Of The Relationship Between Formal And Informal Caregivers In Caring For Older People, Asia-Pacific Institute Of Ageing Studies, Lingnan University, Christian Family Service Centre

APIAS Monograph 專題論文

Christian Family Service Centre (CFSC) has been striving for better caring services for older people in Hong Kong. However, many studies often focus only on a single dimension of caregivng in either informal or formal caregivers. Few studies have viewed caring as an integrative approach, with limited examination and exploration on the caring processes and interactions between the caregivers and carees and the reasons for this pattern. Therefore, CFSC invited the Asia-Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies (APIAS) to conduct the research. The present research aimed to explore caregiving relationships and care patterns among caregivers and carees. The goal was also …

"The Impact of China's Accession to the WTO" 中國入世後的初步分析

This paper will first review the early concerns about China's entry to the WTO. Then we will evaluate the preliminary impact of the WTO membership on the Chinese economy, which turned out to be better than expected. We also discuss the current international debate on the Chinese currency renminbi revaluation and suggest that a gradual improvement of the current Chinese rigid exchange rate system will be inevitable.

Finally we will explore the potential problems and challenges to both economies of mainland China and Hong Kong in the future. We argue that …

In this research, empirical approach has been adopted to explain the monetary transmission mechanism to document the characteristics of the bank lending channel in China since her implementation of the open-door policy. Exploring The Changing Relationship Between Formal Carers, Informal Carers And Carees During The Elder-Care Process, Sing Nam Hung

Theses & Dissertations

There are increasing studies looking at effects of caregiving to the frail elderly in Hong Kong. However, many studies often focus only on a single dimension of caregiving in either informal or formal carers without the focus on the elderly that receiving cares. Few studies have viewed elder caregiving as an integrative and dynamic approach, with limited examination and exploration on the caring processes and interactions between the formal and informal carers and elderly carees, and the reasons for this pattern.

Thus a caregiving triad might be considered as consisting of the elderly caree, the formal and informal carer, and …

Women's Retirement And Leisure In Hong Kong : A Life Course Approach, Ho Yee, Vienne Tso Jan 2004

Women's Retirement And Leisure In Hong Kong : A Life Course Approach, Ho Yee, Vienne Tso

Theses & Dissertations

According to the life course perspective, individuals’ life pattern could be viewed from vertical and horizontal dimension, including “preparation”, “establishment” and “culmination”; family, education/work and leisure respectively. There is prevailing gendered division of household labor that “men’s out, women’s in” in patriarchal societies, like Hong Kong. For men, paid work tends to affect the household labor and leisure time. While women’s career aspiration and leisure consumption tend to be influenced by their family duties during their employment life.

Life patterns often change when people retired, as there are generally only family and leisure life left as work and children are …
