There is a growing body of literature on the development of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) assessment tool, LibQUAL+ (Cook, Heath, Thompson). Because LibQUAL+ is a fairly recent innovation, there has been little published on its use in individual libraries. The 2001 LibQUAL+ survey at Texas Tech (Kemp) and the 2002 survey at the University of Washington (Hiller) are two exceptions. Both were conducted at ARL libraries, which is appropriate as LibQUAL+ is an ARL program. The Relationship Of Undergraduate Students’ Self-Assessment Of Library Skills To Their Opinion Of Library Instruction: A Self-Reporting Survey, Christopher A. Freeman

College students, in general, are known to be lacking in their ability to effectively make use of academic library resources, yet in many previous studies these same students have estimated their library-use skills at inflated levels. Neither do college students in general often willingly take advantage of library instruction opportunities. A self-reporting survey was administered to forty first-year college students in order to investigate whether students’ tendency to over-estimate library use skills has an effect on student opinion about library instruction in general. This study arose from the need for member input into the development of the Southeastern Library Association’s (SELA) Strategic Plan. Additionally, the Planning and Development Committee felt it was important to obtain a better understanding of what services and activities the librarians in the southeast would like to see provided by the regional association. The Committee also recognized that it was important not only to ask for possible areas of improvement, but to also ask for ideas on how to achieve those improvements.

In autumn of 1999, the library World Wide Websites at Appalachian State University and Georgia Southern University had been in place for more than a year, and many library users reported that certain aspects of the sites’ designs were confusing. In order to alleviate the confusion, librarians from the two universities decided to redesign the sites by determining the greatest sources of confusion. To do this, we studied how patrons used the web sites by way of user-centered usability testing.
