Volunteering With Friends Groups Is Rewarding Experience, John J. Roberts

Due to reduced state funding for public libraries, his family reportedly joined The Friends of The Libraries group to volunteer for fundraising efforts. It is stated that they sorted books and handled book sales and donations and have provided 80 percent of new books to those who need them.

It points out the significance of political advocacy, particularly the role of the friends of library groups in promoting the importance of a public library. It encourages the holding of private fundraising combined with advocacy for the benefit of the library and taking into consideration the capabilities of its board of directors and moving beyond just membership contributions. Also proposed is the use of a merged model of a library friends group and foundation.
