Previous studies suggest the importance of understanding what factors increase risk of lack of physical activity (PA) prior to bariatric surgery, which may increase risk of suboptimal postoperative outcomes. Therefore, the current study sought to explore which Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) scales were associated with lack of pre-surgical PA. The mean age of the sample (N=1170) was 45.97 years [standard deviation (SD)=11.59]. Bivariate correlations and relative risk ratios were utilized to examine associations between MMPI-2-RF scale scores and regular preoperative PA. Of the ten hypothesized associations, seven MMPI-2-RF scales in the internalizing and somatic domains were associated with …

Race And The Extra-Legal Punishment Of Professional Athletes, Samuel V. Bruton, Donald F. Sacco, Earl W. Spurgin, Kori N. Armstrong Jan 2018

Race And The Extra-Legal Punishment Of Professional Athletes, Samuel V. Bruton, Donald F. Sacco, Earl W. Spurgin, Kori N. Armstrong

2018 Faculty Bibliography

In recent years, major American sports teams and leagues have responded increasingly to players’ off-field, off-court wrongdoing by imposing extra-legal punishments (ELPs) on offending athletes. This paper focuses on an unexplored ethical concern raised by ELPs: teams’ and leagues’ economic incentive for racial bias in the imposed sanctions. In an experimental study, Black and White participants read a series of vignettes about fictional professional athletes who received ELPs for various off-field transgressions. Black participants evaluating punishments imposed on Black athletes found the ELPs inappropriate and overly punitive relative to punishments imposed on White or racially neutral athletes. Conversely, Whites assessing …

Apps And Autonomy: Perceived Interactivity And Autonomous Regulation In Mhealth Applications, Saraswathi Bellur, Christina Devoss Jan 2018

Apps And Autonomy: Perceived Interactivity And Autonomous Regulation In Mhealth Applications, Saraswathi Bellur, Christina Devoss

2018 Faculty Bibliography

Thousands of smartphone apps geared toward monitoring health behaviors are released regularly. Even as developers flood the market with mHealth apps, consumers seem overwhelmed with choices and report lack of sustained use, which raises questions about their efficacy. An online survey (N = 513) found that perceived interactivity not only has a direct effect but also exerts an indirect effect via greater autonomous regulation on users’ attitudes and behavioral intentions toward mHealth apps. Frequency of tracking and updating personal data showed significant effects on behavioral intentions. Theoretical and practical suggestions for the design and evaluation of mHealth apps are discussed.

Making A University Community More Dementia Friendly Through Participation In An Intergenerational Choir., Phyllis Braudy Harris, Cynthia A. Caporella Jan 2018

Making A University Community More Dementia Friendly Through Participation In An Intergenerational Choir., Phyllis Braudy Harris, Cynthia A. Caporella

2018 Faculty Bibliography

A dementia friendly community is one that is informed about dementia, respectful and inclusive of people with dementia and their families, provides support, promotes empowerment, and fosters quality of life. This study presents data from four cohorts of undergraduate college students and people with dementia and their family members, using an intergenerational choir as the process through which to begin to create a dementia friendly community. This was accomplished by breaking down the stereotypes and misunderstandings that young adults have about people with dementia, thus allowing their commonalities and the strengths of the people living with dementia to become more …

Prospective Comparison Of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (Mmpi-2) And Mmpi-2-Restructured Form (Mmpi-2-Rf) In Predicting Treatment Outcomes Among Patients With Chronic Low Back Pain, Anthony M. Tarescavage Jan 2018

Tarescavage

2018 Faculty Bibliography

The purpose of the current study was to examine the relative utility of the most updated MMPI adult instrument, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF), which was designed to address psychometric limitations of the MMPI-2. To this end, we compared mean scores and correlates of emotional distress treatment outcomes using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales in a sample of 230 patients (73 males, 157 females) who had completed an interdisciplinary chronic pain rehabilitation program. Structural equation modeling analyses indicated that higher scale scores from all the MMPI-2-RF substantive domains were meaningfully associated with worse emotional distress outcomes, whereas the …

Predicting Postprobationary Job Performance Of Police Officers Using Cpi And Mmpi–2–Rf Test Data Obtained During Preemployment Psychological Screening, Ryan M. Roberts, Anthony M. Tarescavage, Yossef S. Ben-Porath, Michael D. Roberts Jan 2018

Predicting Postprobationary Job Performance Of Police Officers Using Cpi And Mmpi–2–Rf Test Data Obtained During Preemployment Psychological Screening, Ryan M. Roberts, Anthony M. Tarescavage, Yossef S. Ben-Porath, Michael D. Roberts

2018 Faculty Bibliography

We examined associations between prehire California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and prorated Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory–2 Restructured Form (MMPI–2–RF) scores (calculated from MMPI profiles) and supervisor ratings for a sample of 143 male police officers. Substantive scale scores in this sample were meaningfully lower than those obtained by the tests’ normative samples in the case of the MMPI–2–RF and meaningfully higher in the case of the CPI (indicating less psychological dysfunction). Test scores from both instruments showed substantial range restriction, consistent with those produced by members of the police candidate comparison groups (Corey & Ben-Porath, 2014Corey, D. M., & Ben-Porath, …

Assessing Criterion Validity Of Using Internet Searches As A Measure Of Public Attention, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Patrick E. Grogan-Myers Jan 2018

Assessing Criterion Validity Of Using Internet Searches As A Measure Of Public Attention, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Patrick E. Grogan-Myers

2018 Faculty Bibliography

We examine the criterion validity of using internet searches as a measure of public attention to United States Supreme Court (USSC) cases. First, we construct a measure of public attention to three cases by comparing relevant search terms in Google Trends to one top search terms of the year, then sum the measure week by week during the period of the research design. To test the measure’s criterion validity, we replicate Scott and Saunders’ (2006) models using their dataset (created by conducting phone interviews of a national sample using random digit dialing) that was designed to assess awareness of USSC …

Teaching Social Justice: Intergenerational Service Learning In A Digital Media Course, Margaret O. Finucane, Linda Seiter, Nathan C. Gehlert

2018 Faculty Bibliography

Digital media play an increasingly dominant role in reinforcing and challenging power inequality in social and institutional relationships. This paper describes how a service-learning component engaged students in community-based interactions that not only deepened their understanding of course content but also increased their commitment to diversity, community issues, and personal development. A close look at three case studies shows that integrating service learning into a first year seminar on digital media and social justice had positive outcomes for students when intentionally paired with community partners offering course-related projects.

The Impact Of Presidential Field Offices In Ohio, 2008-2012, Colin D. Swearingen Jan 2018

The Impact Of Presidential Field Offices In Ohio, 2008-2012, Colin D. Swearingen

2018 Faculty Bibliography

Does a community’s proximity to a presidential field office impact presidential election results? Applying community-level data from the American Community Survey, we examine the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections in the battleground state of Ohio. Using spatial regression, we find that the number of Obama field offices within 10 miles significantly increased his share of the vote in 2012. While proximity to a McCain Victory Center statistically decreased a community’s Obama vote share, this result was not substantive. In 2012, a community’s proximity to a Romney field office did not influence the results. Proximity to an Obama field office also …

Those tasked with disseminating life-protecting messages during crises have many factors to consider. Social media sites have become an information source for individuals during these times, and more research is needed examining the use of specific message strategies by emergency management agencies that may elicit attention and retransmission. This study examines Twitter content concerning Hurricane Joaquin. Content analysis of tweets from state emergency management accounts was performed to provide an overview of the content and stylistic elements used in tweets associated with the event. The findings are discussed in the context of both past research on the matter and implications …

Place Of Behavior Analysis In The Changing Culture Of Replication And Statistical Reporting In Psychological Science, Abdulrazaq Imam Jan 2018

Place Of Behavior Analysis In The Changing Culture Of Replication And Statistical Reporting In Psychological Science, Abdulrazaq Imam

2018 Faculty Bibliography

The “new” psychological science seeks to promote a culture of replication in response to rampant publication bias and some controversial failures to replicate. Two of the solutions adopted are the emphases on the New Statistics by Psychological Science and the growing use of replication repositories. Where does behavior analytic research fit in this effort? Although experimental and applied research methods in behavior analysis naturally are replication focused and replication friendly, trending growth in group designs in different areas of behavior analytic research suggests that we should be sharing the concerns in the broader psychological science community. What measures, if any, …
