Can The Effective Use Of Imagery In Marketing Publications Help Create A More Diversified Campus Community At Illinois State University?, Deanne Hamblin

ISU Ethnography of the University Initiative

Higher education management has shifted over time; replacing the democratic model with the business model. As a result, universities have incorporated extensive marketing campaigns to target students for recruitment. Unfortunately, the imagery used in marketing publications in these campaigns is not always effective in creating diversified campus communities. This publication will summarize the ethnographic study conducted in the fall of 2012 to assess Illinois State University’s use of imagery in their marketing campaigns to first year students. Surveys, observations, and a review of photographs used in publications over the course of Illinois State University’s marketing history will be discussed and …

Uplift And Blame: Minority Parents In The Discourse Of Professional Educators, Katie Mitchell Dec 2012

Uplift And Blame: Minority Parents In The Discourse Of Professional Educators, Katie Mitchell

Master's Theses - Sociology and Anthropology

This historical document analysis explores the professional discourse on minority parents in education during the Progressive (1900-1914), Post-Civil Rights/ESEA (1960-1974), and NCLB/Accountability Eras (1995-2009). Grounded theory was used to code and analyze 430 articles mentioning parents and/or home life from two peer-reviewed journals of education. Research questions asked which minority parents are of interest to educators in each era, how minority parenting roles are portrayed in the educational discourse, and why minority parents concern educators. Findings include a focus on immigrant parents in the Progressive Era and on African American and Hispanic parents in the Post-Civil Rights/ESEA and NCLB/Accountability Eras. …

Yes, But What Is It That You Do?, Amanda Rinehart

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Despite carefully crafted job descriptions, e-science or data librarians find that there is little consensus on position responsibilities and required competencies. Consequently, these librarians tend to customize their positions around what their clientele require. Indeed, data “Curation Service Models [are] driven by user requirements”. Therefore, it’s not just about the data – it’s about the people. Specifically, it’s about the different cultures of user groups and librarians and how to communicate effectively across these groups. The “elevator speech” for a scientist might be quite different from the one for your librarian colleague. It’s no wonder that a recent survey of …

Ethnic Diversity And Poverty: A Dynamic Panel Study Of Illinois Counties, Ambuj Neupane Aug 2012

Ethnic Diversity And Poverty: A Dynamic Panel Study Of Illinois Counties, Ambuj Neupane

Master's Theses - Economics

Ethnic diversity’s effects on factors of economic development have been studied widely in recent years. I expand upon this research by directly studying ethnic diversity’s effects on the poverty rates within the counties of Illinois, using a dynamic panel technique devised by Blundell and Bond (1998). My results are consistent with the noted effects in previous literature, and provide extra weight towards measures of fractionalization and polarization. I conclude with policy implications and limitations which require future research.

Fiscal Decentralization And Its Effect On Poverty Evidence From Panel Data On The Lower 48 American States, Nicholas Valaris Aug 2012

Fiscal Decentralization And Its Effect On Poverty Evidence From Panel Data On The Lower 48 American States, Nicholas Valaris

Capstone Projects-Economics

This study examines the effect of local and state fiscal autonomy on the poverty rate in the U.S. from 1980-2000. The findings are that the gap between own revenues and own expenditures, known as Vertical Imbalances, has an optimal level at which the negative influence on poverty is at its maximum. Shifts along the Vertical Imbalances curve towards the optimal value cause reductions in the poverty rate by hundredths of a percent. Convergence towards the optimal Vertical Imbalances value is still recommended as a reduction in poverty could be achieved by incurring little to no economic cost.

On The Removal Of Download Access To Grateful Dead Soundboards From The Live Music Archive, Jeremy Berg

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

In November 2005, access to all recordings of Grateful Dead shows on the Internet Live Music Archive was abruptly discontinued. Over the next nine days, the band, their fans, and the Archive argued the matter on a nationwide stage, before a compromise on access was reached. The controversy touched on issues of copyright, ownership, and the effects of the Internet on making fan projects more widespread and organized than ever before. This case study traces the history of the controversy and its implications through primary and secondary sources and an original interview.

Struggling Against U.S. Labor's Decline Under Late Capitalism: Lessons For The Early 21st Century, Victor G. Devinatz

Faculty Publications-- Management

The three books reviewed in this essay provide meaningful contributions
and extensions to the crucial dialog on what is needed for U. S. trade union movement revival in an era of neoliberal globalization and increasing employment insecurity. What Andrew Battista’s The Revival of Labor Liberalism, Steve Early’s Embedded with Organized Labor: Journalistic Reflections on the Class War at Home, and Steve K. Ashby and C. J. Hawking’s Staley: The Fight for a New American Labor Movement make painstakingly clear is that the renewal of the U. S. labor movement — if there is to be one at this time — …

Closures And Consolidation: Schools, Farms, And Population Decline In Rural Illinois, Eric Porter May 2012

Closures And Consolidation: Schools, Farms, And Population Decline In Rural Illinois, Eric Porter

Master's Theses - Sociology and Anthropology

This thesis reports the results of a year-long quantitative research project that examined the causal relationships between population loss, agricultural consolidation and school closures in rural Illinois—three primary facets of the overall decline in rural America. Conventional wisdom conceptualizes the following progression: a shifting U.S. economy from agriculture to manufacturing moved jobs to urban centers, which along with the reduced need for labor from industrialization in farming, caused out-migration from rural America; eventually this led to many rural schools closing due to dropping enrollment. However, it is hypothesized that these processes create exacerbating feedback loops. Specifically, loss of population leads …

International Political Economy Reference Sources: An Annotated Bibliography, Theodore C. Schwitzner, Chad M. Kahl

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

International political economy is an emerging yet specialized field that combines political analysis with the study of markets, trade, and development. With the global economy having an interdependent effect on politics, environment, and society, and with several major economic events of the last 20 years, the authors perceived a need to provide a guide to the sources in this field. This paper seeks to address this issue. The authors identified resources using WorldCat and standard reference sources, such as American Library Association's Guide to Reference Books; the annual American Libraries’ “Outstanding Reference Sources” articles; American Reference Books Annual (ARBA) volumes; …

Posters, Programs, And Perspectives On Democracy, Chad M. Kahl, Janet Paterson Jan 2012

Posters, Programs, And Perspectives On Democracy, Chad M. Kahl, Janet Paterson

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Kahl and Paterson provide an example of collaboration around a specific, one-time program that both units were interested in bringing to their university, in this case an art installation on the theme of democracy. Although the authors spearheaded the program, they tapped the expertise of colleagues in their units and across campus in order to accomplish their goals. Kahl and Paterson's work also serves as an example of combining active programming, in this case three lectures by campus faculty, with passive programming, an approach where professionals create exhibits or educational displays in a centrally located venue for students and others …

Academic Freedom, Intellectual Diversity, And The Place Of Politics In Geography, Reecia Orzeck Jan 2012

Academic Freedom, Intellectual Diversity, And The Place Of Politics In Geography, Reecia Orzeck

Faculty Publications-- Geography, Geology, and the Environment

This paper examines the conservative critique of higher education in the USA. I argue, first, that the right's call for greater “intellectual diversity” in American higher education should be understood as an attack on the professional self-regulation and disciplinary autonomy that are central to academic freedom in this country. Second, I suggest that the right's politicization of politics in the academy brings to light the importance of our developing a vision of the university that accounts for rather than disavows the political nature of the work we do.
