This requirement does not apply to elderly persons, disabled persons, persons already working, persons exempted from work requirements under State welfare to work programs, or programs receiving assistance under a State program that have not been found to be in non-compliance with such a program” (Hunt, Schulhof, Holmquist, 1998: 5). The Future Of Information Literacy: Transforming The World, Dane Ward Oct 2001

The Future Of Information Literacy: Transforming The World, Dane Ward

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Information literacy is currently understood as embracing the ability to define a problem, find information to solve the problem, evaluate the information, and use it effectively. In theory, these broad competencies encompass the entire research process and, ideally, should be integrated across the curriculum. In practice, however, most librarians continue to teach one-shot sessions on locating information, and rarely find the time or opportunity to develop applications of the theory. In part, our difficulty in gaining rapid and widespread acceptance of information literacy results from our attempt to fit this revolutionary idea within a traditional teaching paradigm, which diminishes it.

Faculty Publications – Psychology

Community-based organizations that are engaged in HIV/AIDS prevention and support services often rely on volunteers. This article describes the development of a 22-item inventory that measures the motivations of volunteers who deliver HIV prevention education in the African American community. In a statewide survey of volunteers (N = 102), the two strongest motivations for volunteer activity were concern for the African American community and a desire to understand the causes and consequences of the epidemic. These motives predicted the frequency that volunteers held discussions about HIV/AIDS with members of their community. Discussion focuses on the relevance of the results for …

Restoring The Juridical Image: Apologia For Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Joseph R. Blaney Jan 2001

Restoring The Juridical Image: Apologia For Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Joseph R. Blaney

Faculty Publications - Communications

Image restoration theory is used to discover that Holy Cross Father James Tunstead Burthchaell's defense of the Papal Apostolic Constitution Ex Corde Ecclesiae was ineffective. Although he used attacks on accusers appropriately, his strategies of denial and transcendence were in conflict. He also failed to adequately address the accusation that the nature of American college charters make the American bishops' application of the document impossible. Finally, though perhaps through no fault of his own, he was "preaching to the choir. " The study sheds further light on the role of transcendence in religious image repair.
