Throughout the United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, prisoners are employed for less than $1 per hour in agriculture, manufacturing, public works projects, and dozens of other industries. The privately owned prison companies Corrections Corporation of America, G4S, Sodexo Justice Services, and Serco vie for government contracts to build, staff, and regulate prisons and prisoners. Other entities, such as China’s Laogai and The USA’s Federal Prison Industries, are ingrained into the national government. Prisoner labor produces billions of dollars in goods and services every year. When crime and recidivism increase, for-profit prisons receive inexpensive laborers. This …

Reconstructing The Dietary Signal Of The Primate Taxon Cercopithecoides Williamsi From The Plio-Pleistocene Caves Of South Africa, William G. Anderson, Frank L. Williams

The taxon known as Cercopithecoides williamsi has been reconstructed as a terrestrial primate folivore from its dental morphology and heavy dental microwear. It was recovered at a number of Plio-Pleistocene caves in South Africa, including Makapansgat, Sterkfontein Member 4, Sterkfontein West Pit and Bolt’s Farm. For the purposes of corroborating or contradicting previous dietary reconstructions, six specimens of Cercopithecoides williamsi were examined and compared with the extant primate taxa Papio ursinus (n = 5), Papio cynocephalus (n = 5) and Colobus polykomos (n = 5) to provide a frame of reference, using low-magnification stereomicroscopy in conjunction with an ocular reticle …

Previous research using self-report measures found that the Big-Five personality trait openness to experience was the strongest predictor of attitudes toward gay men and lesbians. A secondary data analysis was conducted to evaluate the mediation between openness levels and the time to intervene as a bystander to an anti-gay aggressive scenario. Participants (n = 65) were self-identified heterosexual male undergraduate students who witnessed a staged scene of anti-gay aggression. During the experiment, one confederate was verbally aggressive toward another, ostensibly gay, confederate; participants chose whether and when to intervene. Charter schools have autonomy from district and state regulations related to who they hire, how they structure the school day, and how they spend their resources. In exchange for this autonomy, charter schools must exceed the state average of traditional public schools on performance measures. Most charter schools operate alone from their districts or with a consortium of schools that have adopted the same curriculum. The State of Georgia, however, permits school districts to apply for charter status, such that every school in the district is a charter school and each school makes decisions about its people, time and money. …

Women live in a world where nearly one in four will experience sexual assault. In fact, sexual violence is now so common that the World Health Organization recently declared it a global epidemic. Despite the prevalence of such incidents, few perpetrators self-identify. In the cases where they did acknowledge their infractions, many perpetrators said they acted as they did because they misconceived a partner’s sexual intention. This current article will argue that confusion about consent serves as more than a potential risk factor; it also provides a reason for disclosing details about the assault.
