Positive Effects Of Mindfulness Practices On Academic Performance And Well-Being, Katia G. Karadjova-Kozhuharova, Ruth L. Baker

Library Faculty Publications

This qualitative study explored potential positive effects of mindfulness practices among university students. The mindfulness practices were provided at an experiential space, the Brain Booth at the university library, meant to learn about the mind-body connection, reduce stress, and optimize learning. The Brain Booth activities were available to students at any time during the library working hours. The findings showed that the Brain Booth was experienced as helping students to 1) Relax and Destress; 2) Calm down; 3) Foster focus and clarity; 4) Actively engage and reenergize. College Students’ Perceptions Of The Efficacy Of Different Strategies To Reduce The Rate Of Abortions, Sophia B. Doros Nov 2022

College Students’ Perceptions Of The Efficacy Of Different Strategies To Reduce The Rate Of Abortions, Sophia B. Doros

Honors College Theses

This study examines college students’ perceptions of different strategies and the efficacy of those strategies to reduce the rates of abortions. Factors such as comprehensive, medically accurate sex education, widespread accessibility and affordability of contraception, and affordable and accessible pre-natal care are all factors that the literature has established lower the rates of abortions. Factors such as waiting periods of 24 hours or more to perform a surgical abortion, restricting state funding for abortions, and legal bans of abortions altogether are factors that do not reduce the rates of abortions (Medoff, 2015); they may even be counterproductive to their original …

The Correlation Between The Covid-19 Pandemic And Nursing Students’ Academic And Professional Engagement And Performance., Jolie Mathilde Komlan

Honors College Theses

Even without the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, nursing schools are recognized as a stressful environment "that often exert a negative effect on the academic performances and psychological well-being of the students" (Gomathi et al., 2017). Exploring the changes this ongoing pandemic has on nursing students' views and perspectives, along with their perceived threats, failures, and successes brought on by this pandemic will provide good insight into further changes that need to be implemented to better prepare nursing students through their programs. To accomplish this, participants within the nursing program were surveyed via a 21-question survey on Qualtrics. A retrospective analysis …

“Re/Imagining Culturally Responsive Educational Practices (Crep) And Implementing Crep To Meet The Needs Of Diverse Student Populations”, Rena' Glass-Dixon, Shelbie Dixon-Brown

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference

The aim of this interactive workshop for educators and administrators is to promote cultural awareness and reflect on the impact that our own cultural influences have on the teaching and learning process. This interactive session will also allow professional educators and leaders to apply culturally informed practices to foster positive school climate, learning and academic achievement relevant to a widely diverse student population. The workshop strives to encourage dialogue between educators, administrators and interdisciplinary/inter-agency team members through the application of evidence-based practices for the development of a deeper understanding of ourselves and how our views impact on students’ academic achievement, …

The Drug War In America: How Much Damage Has It Done, Sherrod D. Hollingshed

Honors College Theses

For decades, the War on Drugs has had a profound effect on the United States of America. The effects include high arrest rates, creation of private prisons, and unequal treatment of minorities by the Criminal Justice System. For the past several years, heightened attention has been paid to the War on Drugs. There have been calls to legalize certain drugs, such as marijuana, and calls to completely end the War on Drugs. The purpose of this study is to (1) study the history of the War on Drugs in America and discuss the effects that it has had on America, …

Unveiling The Mask:Sexual Trauma's Impact On Academic Achievement, Behavior, And Self-Identity, Teshaunda Hannor-Walker, Sarah Kitchens, Lacey Ricks

National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference

Sexual trauma is an unfortunate but a common and often masked experience for many students in America. While sexual trauma in itself is not a mental health disorder, it can become a risk factor for many academic and mental health problems. Trauma-informed schools can play an important role in helping students deal with the aftercare of a traumatic experience.

Do You Know What They Don’T Know? : How Students Conduct Research, Peggy L. Nuhn, Min Tong Sep 2016

Do You Know What They Don’T Know? : How Students Conduct Research, Peggy L. Nuhn, Min Tong

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

When developing student research assignments, many faculty may make the assumption that the current generation of computer-savvy students will intuitively determine how to effectively use library resources, and incorporate that information into a thoughtful and properly cited research paper -- after all, students frequently express a high level of confidence in their research abilities. But is this realistic? Do students understand the difference between a keyword and a subject search and how that understanding can help them? Do students really understand that research is a process rather than a scavenger hunt?

Any faculty member who has received student research papers …

Aspects Of The Self And Psychological Outcomes, Neil P. Martin Jan 2014

Aspects Of The Self And Psychological Outcomes, Neil P. Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Depression ranks among the top health concerns on college campuses and impairs students’ functioning across numerous domains including academic, social, and personal areas, and there is still an urgent need for a model that can provide comprehensive understanding of the development and treatment of depression. The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model is introduced to bridge this gap. The current study aimed to make contributions to mental health literature by advancing our understanding of IFS theory (specifically, the concept of Self) in predicting depression, providing a framework for promoting a non-pathological model of depression, and adding to the body of empirical …
