Marital Satisfaction And Conflict: A Cross Cultural Comparison Between China And Australia, Lauren Gabelich Jan 2012

Marital Satisfaction And Conflict: A Cross Cultural Comparison Between China And Australia, Lauren Gabelich

School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations

The levels of marital satisfaction and how these were predicted by scores on the Romantic Partner Conflict Scale were assessed separately in Australian males (n = 48) and females (n = 100) and Chinese males (n = 321) and females (n = 321). Contrary to expectations, marital satisfaction was higher in the Australian sample than in the Chinese sample. However, there was a culture by gender interaction in which Australian females were much more satisfied than Chinese females. Satisfaction scores for males in both cultures were different, with males being less satisfied than females in the …

Tracking Onslow: A Community In Transition. Edition 1, 2012 Jan 2012

Tracking Onslow: A Community In Transition. Edition 1, 2012

Tracking Onslow: a community in transition

Onslow, the town and community you live in, is in for a lot of changes over the next few years. Gas projects will bring new faces, while many old faces are leaving., and new money will buy new things. Will this mean that Onslow loses some of it’s ramshackle, rustic charm? Will it attract hordes of new tourists who’ll crowd out the old crew? Maybe, maybe not — either way we want to know what you think.

This project is a collaboration between the journalism program at Edith Cowan University and the Shire of Ashburton and it’s all about tracking …

Towards An Understanding Of The Separation And Mediation Experiences Of Western Australian Fathers: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study, Carly Mercadante Jan 2012

Towards An Understanding Of The Separation And Mediation Experiences Of Western Australian Fathers: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study, Carly Mercadante

School of Psychology and Social Science Presentations

The process of marriage breakdown can be one of the most painful experiences in life (Qu, 2004). The person who initiates the separation is more likely to experience more positive post divorce adjustment than the non-initiator (Wang & Amato, 2000) and is likely to undertake preparation for separation. In Australia, only 32% of men initiated separation in 2003 (Hewitt, Western & Baxter, 2006), it is possible then, that many separated men are ill prepared for mediation. The 2006 Amendments the Family Law Act presumes shared parental responsibility of children and requires that former partners make a genuine attempt to resolve …

Managing Research Data : A Collaborative Approach, Darren Gibson, Julia Gross, Matthew Wyatt Jan 2012

Managing Research Data : A Collaborative Approach, Darren Gibson, Julia Gross, Matthew Wyatt

Research outputs 2011

To ensure maximum benefit is achieved from the investigations in a collaborative research network, it is essential that research data is managed effectively. However, there is no set model to follow. Normally an institution will establish its own policy and procedures applicable to their researchers and data. This causes difficulties for researchers sharing data across a collaborative network. Edith Cowan University (ECU) is one of fifteen Australian universities striving to create world-class research capacity and capability through investment in the Collaborative Research Network (CRN) project. The CRN project at ECU aims to accelerate the growth of research activity from 2011 …

Excessive Internet Use Among Australian Children, Lelia Green, Khartan Olafsson, Danielle Brady, David Smahel

Research outputs 2011

This brief report builds upon the findings of the EU Kids Online project’s work into Excessive Internet Use among the 19,834 European children (aged 11-16) participating in that study. It compares the European data with the much smaller cohort of 300 Australian children (aged 11-16) who were researched in the parallel AU Kids Online project. In both cases the children were selected according to a random sampling strategy. The full EU Kids Online report includes the research methodology and can be accessed via: http://www2.lse.ac.uk/media@lse/research/EUKidsOnline/EU%20Kids%20II%20(2009- 11)/EUKidsOnlineIIReports/D4FullFindings.pdf The full AU Kids Online report can be accessed via: http://cultural-science.org/journal/index.php/culturalscience/article/view/49/129 The EU Kids Online …

Indigenous Voice Closing The Gap And Putting Communication For Social Change Into Practice, Trevor Cullen, Michael Williams, Heather Stewart, Michelle Johnston, Gail Phillips, Pauline Mulligan, Leo Bowman, Michael Meadows Jan 2012

Indigenous Voice Closing The Gap And Putting Communication For Social Change Into Practice, Trevor Cullen, Michael Williams, Heather Stewart, Michelle Johnston, Gail Phillips, Pauline Mulligan, Leo Bowman, Michael Meadows

Research outputs 2012

Australian journalism schools are full of students who have never met an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and who do not know their history. Journalism educators are illequipped to redress this imbalance as the large majority are themselves non-Indigenous and many have had little or no experience with the coverage of Indigenous issues. Such a situation calls for educational approaches that can overcome these disadvantages and empower journalism graduates to move beyond the stereotypes that characterise the representation of Indigenous people in the mainstream media. This paper will explore three different courses in three Australian Tertiary Journalism Education Institutions who …

E-Book Adoption In Academic & Research Libraries, Pervaiz Ahmad, Mark Brogan, Mike Johnstone Jan 2012

E-Book Adoption In Academic & Research Libraries, Pervaiz Ahmad, Mark Brogan, Mike Johnstone

InfoSci@ECU Seminars

From a fledgling technology with no proven business models, Electronic books (E-books) have grown in importance. Nowhere is this more apparent than in academic libraries, where E-books in many libraries now account for more than half of the library acquisitions budget (Huthwaite et al., 2011). In situations where funding is scarce and E-book adoption requires substantial budgetary provision, libraries must establish the level and extent of E-book use and ascertain factors that point to the worth of E-books as library resources (Crosetto, 2011, p. 125). Consequently, user needs assessment and the analysis of E-book usage patterns have become key factors …

Increase In Caesarean Deliveries After The Australian Private Health Insurance Incentive Policy Reforms, Kristjana Einarsdottir, Anna Kemp, Fatima Haggar, Rachael Moorin, Anthony Gunnell, David Preen, Fiona Stanley, C. D'Arcy Holman Jan 2012

Increase In Caesarean Deliveries After The Australian Private Health Insurance Incentive Policy Reforms, Kristjana Einarsdottir, Anna Kemp, Fatima Haggar, Rachael Moorin, Anthony Gunnell, David Preen, Fiona Stanley, C. D'Arcy Holman

Research outputs 2012

Background: The Australian Private Health Insurance Incentive (PHII) policy reforms implemented in 1997–2000 increased PHI membership in Australia by 50%. Given the higher rate of obstetric interventions in privately insured patients, the reforms may have led to an increase in surgical deliveries and deliveries with longer hospital stays. We aimed to investigate the effect of the PHII policy introduction on birth characteristics in Western Australia (WA). Methods and Findings: All 230,276 birth admissions from January 1995 to March 2004 were identified from administrative birth and hospital data-systems held by the WA Department of Health. Average quarterly birth rates after the …

Safety Vs Credibility: West Papua Media And The Challenge Of Protecting Sources In Dangerous Places, Kayt Davies Jan 2012

Safety Vs Credibility: West Papua Media And The Challenge Of Protecting Sources In Dangerous Places, Kayt Davies

Research outputs 2012

West Papua Media (WPM) is an innovative media outlet established in 2007 in response to the ongoing human rights crisis in the Indonesian provinces that self-identify as West Papua. The context of its establishment included rising hope about the potential of citizen media to empower repressed publics, complaints from mainstream media about the difficulty of establishing the credibility of reports emerging from the provinces, a ban on foreign media, and political moves by Australia to prioritise its relationship with the Indonesian government over demanding an end to oppressive military behaviour in West Papua. This article documents the strategies WPM has …

Evaluating The Psychometric Properties Of The Attitudes Towards Depression And Its Treatments Scale In An Australian Sample, Fadia Isaac, Kenneth Greenwood, Mirella Di Benedetto Jan 2012

Evaluating The Psychometric Properties Of The Attitudes Towards Depression And Its Treatments Scale In An Australian Sample, Fadia Isaac, Kenneth Greenwood, Mirella Di Benedetto

Research outputs 2012

Background: Individuals’ attitudes towards depression and its treatments may influence their likelihood of seeking professional help and adherence to treatment when depressed. Objective measures, such as the Attitudes Towards Depression and its Treatments scale (ATDT), have been developed to assess such attitudes. The aims of this research were to test the reliability and validity of ATDT on an Australian sample who were not depressed during the study or who had previously been depressed, to explore the attitudes of the Australian public towards depression, and to compare these attitudes to those of a Canadian sample of people with depression. Methods: A …
