Attributions Others Assign To Depressed Individuals And Their Relationship To Severity Of Depressive Symptoms, Amount Of Contact, And Familiarity With Depressed Individuals, Joan E. Mcdowell

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

While there has been valuable research critical for furthering our understanding of how an individual's social network affects recovery from depression, we need to know more about the interplay of other people's attributions and their relationships with depressed individuals that may impact recovery from the disorder. This research investigated causal and controllability attributions that others assign to individuals with depression by distributing a questionnaire to faculty and administrative staff at Eastern Michigan University to obtain ratings of attributions for depression. The level of intimacy within a relationship and the severity of depression were related to others' beliefs about the controllability …

Supreme Court Bound: An Introduction Concerning The Intrinsic Subjectivity Of Supreme Court Decision-Making, Luke Hoorelbeke Jan 2005

Supreme Court Bound: An Introduction Concerning The Intrinsic Subjectivity Of Supreme Court Decision-Making, Luke Hoorelbeke

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

There are many theories behind Supreme Court decision-making that are primarily descriptive or normative. Descriptive theories attempt a hermetic explanation that sufficiently applies to all past decisions, and normative theories seek to create a rubric or method, also dependable, for how the justices of the Supreme Court should make decisions. Normative theories can be highly porous and problematic because they involve metaethical concerns like defining “the good.” Essentially, we must try to make “good” decisions all the time, but that ignores the problem of what “good” really means. The design of this essay is such that we will not deal …

The Relationship Between Body Image And Weight Maintenance In Community Women Enrolled In Weight-Loss Programs, Amy S. Collings Jan 2005

The Relationship Between Body Image And Weight Maintenance In Community Women Enrolled In Weight-Loss Programs, Amy S. Collings

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Research suggests that poor body image, low self-esteem, and depression may be associated with failure to maintain weight loss (Lean, 2000). However, definitive results are lacking, necessitating further research. Both successful and unsuccessful weight maintainers (N = 148) were recruited from weight-loss programs. Self-report measures on dimensions of body image, depression, and self-esteem were administered at baseline and a three-month follow-up. Results suggest that those with early-onset obesity have more body image dissatisfaction than those with late-onset obesity, which appears to be due to BMI differences between groups with the former having a higher BMI than the later. Other results …

Caregiver Interventions For Behavioral Symptoms In Alzheimer's And Dementia Patients, Heather M. Lindner Jan 2005

Caregiver Interventions For Behavioral Symptoms In Alzheimer's And Dementia Patients, Heather M. Lindner

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

As people are living longer, the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia is rising dramatically. While preventative and treatment methods are being developed for these complicated disorders, attention also has been directed towards caregivers, because they play a vital role in the way the patients’ symptoms are handled and how well the patients adjust overall. Caregivers are almost always family members who lack formal training in caring for dementia patients. The purpose of this research was to see whether caregivers who follow interventions suggested in the literature experience fewer or less intense behavioral problems on the part …

An Examination Of Modern Family Communication And Moral Values In America And Europe, Melanie Seasons Jan 2005

An Examination Of Modern Family Communication And Moral Values In America And Europe, Melanie Seasons

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The number one concern of some American voters in the 2004 presidential election was "moral values." This paper is an examination of the American family and its fascination with so-called traditional moral values. The results of the analysis are then contrasted to European families, who seem to, according to some research, be less concerned with such traditional beliefs and values. Moral values are defined, explored, and cross-referenced between the two cultures in order to get a better understanding of how they play a part in modem family communication.

A Neighborhood Study Regarding The Relationship Between Social Identity And Street Corner Drinking, Irene Hoskin Heard Jan 2005

A Neighborhood Study Regarding The Relationship Between Social Identity And Street Corner Drinking, Irene Hoskin Heard

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study offered valuable insight into a sub-cultural setting where heavy drinking on the street-corner occurs among a group of African-American men. Data were collected via participant observation, with two primary goals: first, to study street-corner drinking within its larger contextual settings--the family, the neighborhood and larger society--in order to more fully contextually ground this practice; second, to describe the many facets of the identity of the man who drinks on the street corner, rather than view him only as a drinking man. It became evident that the corner drinking men could be considered heavy or problem drinkers, yet ones …

From The Lucky Land To The Beautiful Country: Illegal Immigration Of Fujianese To The United States, Miao Lin Jan 2005

From The Lucky Land To The Beautiful Country: Illegal Immigration Of Fujianese To The United States, Miao Lin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

It is puzzling why Fujianese are willing to pay seventy thousand dollars, which could entitle them to a comfortable life in China, to be smuggled to the United States. Despite the voluminous body of research, the life of Fujianese illegal immigrants has not been systematically explored. This study confirmed that people smuggling is a phenomenon that combines cultural, economic, and political factors. Furthermore, Fujianese who came to seek an American dream have lost something much more valuable than what they have gained, such as their youth and family connections.

In addressing the smuggling strategies, causes, and experiences of Fujianese immigrants, …

The Economic Value Of Supplier Working Relations With Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers, Matthew J. Milas Jan 2005

The Economic Value Of Supplier Working Relations With Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers, Matthew J. Milas

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Do the different approaches automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) take to working relations with their suppliers affect economic variables that impact bottom line results? This study is focused on exploring this question through four hypotheses:

1. Cooperative-trusting relationships lead to reduced costs of sourced materials and overhead.

2. Cooperative-trusting relationships lead to increased levels of innovation with a lower investment in research and development.

3. Cooperative-trusting relationships lead to improved product quality.

4. Cooperative-trusting relationships lead to better resource management of inventory.

Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) was used to perform regression analyses on panel series data. All four hypotheses were …

Assessment And Prediction Of Self-Reported Hiv-Risk Behaviors By Women In Substance Abuse Treatment, Radhika Sehgal

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This study compared information obtained from self-administered questionnaires (SAQ) and faceto- face interview (FTFI) versions of the HIV Risk-taking Behavior Scale. This study also compared women intravenous drug users (IVDU’s) and non-IVDU’s on rates of HIV risk behaviors and the extent to which unstable housing, unemployment, single parenthood, barriers to accessing health care, and number of years of drug abuse predicted HIV risk. There were no differences in rates of risk behavior reported between SAQ and FTFI formats. IVDU’s had higher sexual risk behaviors than non-IVDU’s. Unstable housing significantly predicted risk behavior. Relative to those with more education, those with …

The Role Of The Tehran Bazaaris In Protest Events Under The First Government Of Mosaddeq In Iran (29 April 1951 - 21 July 1952), Mari Nukii Jan 2005

The Role Of The Tehran Bazaaris In Protest Events Under The First Government Of Mosaddeq In Iran (29 April 1951 - 21 July 1952), Mari Nukii

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In the spring of 1951, the Iranian government nationalized the British-controlled oil industry, supported by a massive popular movement. The National Front, which led the movement, mainly consisted of three social groups: the clergy (ulama), secular intellectuals, and the bazaaris (merchants, guilds, and artisans). Despite its importance, the role of the bazaaris has not sufficiently been articulated in previous studies.

This study analyzes the role of the Tehran bazaaris in the oil nationalization movement, focusing on the period of the first government of Mosaddeq. Protest event analysis is used to test the religious explanation and the economic explanation …

The Effect Of Pretense On The Creativity Of Storytelling In Preschool And Kindergarten-Age Children, Storm R. Ross Jan 2005

The Effect Of Pretense On The Creativity Of Storytelling In Preschool And Kindergarten-Age Children, Storm R. Ross

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Previous research suggests a link between pretense and the creative behavior of children, such as associative fluency. Most results show that children who engaged in pretense prior to an associative fluency task gave more nonstandard uses for play objects than children who engaged in imitation play or coloring. However, the effect of pretense play on other forms of creativity has not been extensively researched. One such form of creativity is storytelling.

The present study examined the relationship between pretense and storytelling. It was hypothesized that the stories a child tells after engaging in pretense play would be ranked and rated …

Capitalizing On Stereotypes, Christine Hass

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

While walking through the isle of never ending glossy magazine covers, one can easily notice the differences between men's and women's magazines. It is not something that people notice right away, but it is something worth looking at. Obviously, the magazine industry creates the covers of its magazines, as well as the articles, to attract people to buy its magazines.

Through flashy covers and screaming tag lines men and women alike are overwhelmed with pressure to buy various magazines. Magazines almost stare at you from the stands at supermarket check out aisles. Words such as make-up, sex, beer, diet, and …

The Fear Of Death And The Fear Of Dying: Possible Barriers To Altruistic Behavior, Jennifer Haskin Corwin Jan 2005

The Fear Of Death And The Fear Of Dying: Possible Barriers To Altruistic Behavior, Jennifer Haskin Corwin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Research in the study of the fear of death and dying and the study of altruism implies that there is a dynamic relationship between the two fields. Rarely, if ever, has a direct connection been made. This study is an effort to further explore the relationship that exists between the fear of death and dying, altruistic behavior, self-esteem, and perceptions of a common humanity. Through the synthesis of these four key social psychological concepts, a theoretical model was developed and tested.

Through the examination and statistical analysis of quantitative data and the systematic evaluation of interview data, several connections between …
