Ccc’S Get It Now Service As A Collection Development Strategy, Kelly Smith, Pat New
Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations
Copyright Clearance Center's "Get it Now" service gives libraries the ability to provide immediate fulfillment of full-text articles from unsubscribed journals from over a dozen publishers. Eastern Kentucky University Libraries implemented "Get it Now" as a mediated ILL service starting in July of 2011. In this session, presenters discussed lessons learned during the implementation of the service, gave an overview of the fulfillment workflow, and outlined its successes and limitations.

User-Focused Acquisitions Strategies: Developing Collections For The 21st Century, Kelly Smith
Library Faculty and Staff Papers and Presentations
With flat or declining budgets and rising prices, most libraries need to find new ways to provide access to the significant amount of content that our users need. Following a user-centered philosophy, Eastern Kentucky University Libraries have implemented several new approaches for acquiring print and electronic resources. Initiatives have included: Patron-driven eBook collections - both broad and subject-specific; article-level purchasing using Copyright Clearance Center’s Get it Now service; and ILL initiated collection development for print resources. The presenter described each initiative and discussed their effect on the budget, the usage of resources, and workflow processes. Future implications for organization and …

Brushed-Off Testimony, Stanley L. Brodsky, Dustin B. Wygant
Brushed-Off Testimony, Stanley L. Brodsky, Dustin B. Wygant
Psychology Faculty and Staff Research
In line with years of tradition, soldiers young and old come together at the local pub or hall to swap war stories of time in the trenches. For the forensic clinician, the trenches represent the hard-fought battles during expert testimony. As it turns out, our pub was a social gathering at the 2012 meeting of the American Psychology Law Society in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The University of Alabama Psychology Law Program hosted a social gathering for its faculty, graduate students, alumni, and friends to come together and share stories and camaraderie. It was in this setting that we launched …
Empirically Guided Case Conceptualization Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder With The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (Mmpi-2-Rf) In A Forensic Disability Evaluation, Lauren M. Vines, Roger O. Gervais, Dustin Wygant
Empirically Guided Case Conceptualization Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder With The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 Restructured Form (Mmpi-2-Rf) In A Forensic Disability Evaluation, Lauren M. Vines, Roger O. Gervais, Dustin Wygant
Psychology Faculty and Staff Research
The following article discusses how the Restructured Form of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI -2-RF; Ben-Porath & Tellegen, 2008) can be used in case conceptualizations for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), particularly in compensation seeking settings. We review contemporary conceptualizations of PTSD, particularly emphasizing the role that affect and personality in regards to etiology of the disorder, as well as different manifestations of the disorder. We then review the case of an individual seeking compensation for trauma related disability performed by the third author. Particular emphasis is placed on examining how interpretation of the MMPI-2-RFprofile is guided by empirical findings.
Child Custody Evaluations: Ethical, Scientific, And Practice Considerations, Robert P. Archer, Dustin Wygant
Child Custody Evaluations: Ethical, Scientific, And Practice Considerations, Robert P. Archer, Dustin Wygant
Psychology Faculty and Staff Research
Child custody evaluations are among the most difficult of forensic evaluations. The current paper examines differences between custody evaluations and other types of psychological and forensic evaluations. We also discuss important ethical issues regarding these evaluations and review the typical components of a custody evaluation, with particular attention on psychological testing as a component of custody evaluations. We then discuss the role of research in informing the interpretation of the evaluation data and provide a complete sample custody evaluation report to illustrate several points from the manuscript.

Examining The Occupational Engagement Of College Students With Asperger's Syndrome: A Mixed Methodology, Laura Leigh Henley
Examining The Occupational Engagement Of College Students With Asperger's Syndrome: A Mixed Methodology, Laura Leigh Henley
Online Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this convergent parallel mixed methods design was to determine how young adults enrolled in school with Asperger's Syndrome engage in occupations and how this population perceives their quality of life. Quantitatively, assessment data was gathered using Flanagan's Quality of life Scale and the Occupational Behaviors Satisfaction Checklist. Qualitatively, a phenomenological approach was taken utilizing the Lifestyle Performance Model as a guide to administer semi-structured interviews in order to determine occupational engagement experiences of the young adult population with Asperger's Syndrome enrolled in college. Results will be discussed with implications for occupational therapy and future research.
Identification Of Differences Between Information Communicated By Text Messaging And Voice Message On Feedback, Nicholas Simpson
Identification Of Differences Between Information Communicated By Text Messaging And Voice Message On Feedback, Nicholas Simpson
Online Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the modifying effect of communication via voice or text on a cellular phone as it relates to the effects of feedback on future performance, self-efficacy, and perceived face validity. Previous literature has established an effect of positive feedback enhancing future performance and self-efficacy, and negative feedback decreasing future performance and self-efficacy, but no research currently exists on how this effect can be modified by method of delivery over cellular phone. This study examined the effect of positive and negative feedback by having participants complete self-efficacy, face validity, and performance measures. The participants then received positive or negative …
The Rhetorical Criteria Of Kennedy's Camelot, Stacy Fawn Wilder
The Rhetorical Criteria Of Kennedy's Camelot, Stacy Fawn Wilder
Online Theses and Dissertations
John F. Kennedy's presidential rhetoric reflects key criteria necessary for creating and sustaining the American Camelot myth. That myth was successfully ingrained within the American psyche through the use of visual rhetoric, campaign speech rhetoric, and crisis time rhetoric. Moreover, the collective memory of cultural trauma following Kennedy's assassination suggests a promising continuation of the Camelot myth. Because the four rhetorical categories (visual, campaign, crisis, and collective memory) worked in tandem, all were essential for creating Kennedy's legacy.
Civilian Aviation Screening: A Time-Series Analysis Of Confiscated Firearms At Screening Checkpoints, Shon Agard
Civilian Aviation Screening: A Time-Series Analysis Of Confiscated Firearms At Screening Checkpoints, Shon Agard
Online Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the aviation screening process and sought to determine if the federalization of the screening process had any effect on the number of firearm confiscations at civilian aviation screening checkpoints. The hypothesis of the study was that airport screening firearms confiscations (per one million screenings) were lower before the U.S. government (TSA) took over screening in 2001-2002. This quantitative research required the performance of an interrupted time series analysis. Interrupted time series analysis evaluates the impact of one or more events on the values in the time series. An interrupted time series analysis attempts to determine whether an …
Preliminary Validation Of The Childhood Autism Rating Scale - Second Edition Questionnaire For Parents Or Caregivers (Cars2-Qpc) And The Gilliam Autism Rating Scale (Gars-2) With A Chinese-Speaking Population, Nannan Li
Online Theses and Dissertations
Autism is a neurobiological disorder that is diagnosed through careful behavioral assessment in early childhood. Appropriate measurement of autism is essential for determining appropriate intervention strategies. Whereas, there are only a limited autism measures available for use in China. For this reason, valid and reliable measures of autism for use with Chinese speaking individuals are of critical importance. The purpose of the present study is to begin the process of developing two measures of autism for use with Chinese speaking individuals.
The development of the measures of autism with Chinese speaking population was started by translating the Questionnaire for Parents …
Exploring Military Service As An Alternative Sanction: Evidence From Inmates' Perspectives, Travis Wade Milburn
Exploring Military Service As An Alternative Sanction: Evidence From Inmates' Perspectives, Travis Wade Milburn
Online Theses and Dissertations
A large body of research exists that examines the punitiveness of prison compared to a wide variety of alternative sanctions. Generally, this research finds that there are numerous demographic and contextual differences in the way that people experience the punitiveness of prison. In this paper, I expand that research by using data from over 900 inmates to examine whether they view military service as more punitive than incarceration.
The research suggests females, Blacks, and those who have not had prior military service are more likely to desire imprisonment as opposed to military service. However, Whites and veterans appear to embrace …
The Moderating Effects Of Need For Closure On The Common Ingroup Identity Model, Bradlee Wayne Gamblin
The Moderating Effects Of Need For Closure On The Common Ingroup Identity Model, Bradlee Wayne Gamblin
Online Theses and Dissertations
The current study looked at the Common Ingroup Identity Model and its link to need for closure, a cognitive construct that causes individuals to seek out quick and finite answers. Based on previous research, I predicted that participants high in situational and dispositional need for closure would be more responsive to the Common Ingroup Identity Model than participants who were not. Results indicated that need for closure does not have a direct relationship with the model; however, a three-way interaction suggests that a more complex relationship may exist. These results give the Common Ingroup Identity Model more applicability within real-world …
Expectations Do Not Always Influence Food Liking, Jamie Phillip Hale
Expectations Do Not Always Influence Food Liking, Jamie Phillip Hale
Online Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present experiment was to examine how expectations influence cracker ratings on a scale of likeability. A large body of research shows that expectations affect food experiences (Wansink, 2004; Eertmans, Baeyens & Van den Bergh, 2001; Kahkonen & Tuorila, 1998). Participants were not aware that the primary interest of the study was how expectations influence cracker ratings. Participants were assigned to either a positive expectation group or a neutral expectation group. Participants in the positive expectation group received a positive verbal cue indicating that the crackers had recently been rated high in a national taste test. The …
Constructing Evil: U.S. Media Discourse And The Iranian State Murder Of Neda Agha-Soltan, Justin Turner
Constructing Evil: U.S. Media Discourse And The Iranian State Murder Of Neda Agha-Soltan, Justin Turner
Online Theses and Dissertations
On June 20, 2009, one image became not only a symbol of unbridled state violence, but a rallying cry for a movement contesting the disputed election of hardline Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The particular image in question was of Neda Agha-Soltan, a 26 year old woman whose murder was recorded by cellphone camera during a political protest and subsequently posted to social media networks showing a graphic fist-hand account of the savagery of a state crime. Media discourse presented the idea that Neda's murder was committed by the Iranian government unafraid to implore repressive measures to control its population. The …
Forgotten Victims: A Qualitative Study Of Familial And Intimate Partner Abuse Of Male-To-Female Transgender Individuals In Central Kentucky, Allison Brooke Willingham
Forgotten Victims: A Qualitative Study Of Familial And Intimate Partner Abuse Of Male-To-Female Transgender Individuals In Central Kentucky, Allison Brooke Willingham
Online Theses and Dissertations
Previous research on intimate partner and familial abuse has focused on easily identifiable social institutions, such as "homosexual couple" or "mother/daughter." However, transgender individuals do not always fit into the binary social definitions ascribed to family relationships. Little research has provided insight into cycles of familial and intimate partner verbal or physical abuse in the lives of transgender individuals. The efforts that have been made have shocking results and demonstrate a need for further and more in-depth research. The primary purpose of this research is to gain a rich understanding of the social dynamics affecting the lives of transgender individuals …
Critical Pedagogy In Criminal Justice Higher Education: A Liberative Paradigm, Alyson Kershaw
Critical Pedagogy In Criminal Justice Higher Education: A Liberative Paradigm, Alyson Kershaw
Online Theses and Dissertations
The traditional model of education focuses on the preservation of the status quo that prevents students from the ability to think critically about their world. This has the potential to produce constraints as students not only become criminal justice practitioners, but also engaged members of society. The traditional model is particularly problematic in the criminal justice field due to the potential harms that can result. In an effort to contest the traditional model of education, a number of scholars including Paulo Freire and Henry Giroux advocate for a critical pedagogical model that liberates individuals from oppressive constraints in the education …
