An Examination Of The Determinants Of Annual Giving To Csb And Sju: 1990 - 2023, Benchy Dutreuil, Muhammad Ibragimov

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Based on the data gained from stages 1 and 2, we have concluded that the number of donors of CSB+SJU has declined over time after its peak in 2007, unlike the amount of donations that has been changing a lot but has a positive growing trend in general. We also discovered a significant growth in giving among the top 50% of donors after the year 2008, while the other 2 groups stayed relatively the same with a small positive trend. Additionally, we found a strong correlation between the macroeconomic factors and the patterns the real donations represent. Finally, our linear …

Mapping Racial Covenants In Stearns County, Mn, Jonathan D. Carlson Apr 2024

Mapping Racial Covenants In Stearns County, Mn, Jonathan D. Carlson

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Over the past year, CSB and SJU Honors students uncovered previously unknown racial covenants included in property deeds in Stearns county. Racial covenants prevent people of certain races from owning or occupying property, thus creating segregated neighborhoods. The Great River Covenants Project (https://greatrivercovenants.org/) was created to educate the public about this work. Using Geographic Information Systems, I created maps to show the location of the covenants and when they appeared in neighborhoods through the decades of 1920 to 1960.

Physiological Processes During Reading, Elizabeth Morrey, Emma Smith, Catherine Bohn-Gettler, Jennifer Schaefer Apr 2024

Physiological Processes During Reading, Elizabeth Morrey, Emma Smith, Catherine Bohn-Gettler, Jennifer Schaefer

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

There are many different variables that can impact reading comprehension, such as reading level, emotional state, and the content of the text itself. For example, if a text contains inconsistencies (e.g., when a key moment in the text does not align with the information presented earlier in the story), processing slows as readers attempt to resolve the inconsistency. However, little is known about the connection between processing inconsistent versus consistent passages and physiological responses in the body. The goal of this study is to examine whether reading narrative texts containing inconsistent and/or consistent information elicits sympathetic nervous system activation, as …

This study includes different versions of text messages that can be perceived as negative or positive. Additionally, there are different sets of text messages that end with either an emoji (😉), an ellipsis (...), or a period (.). Findings from this study will help demonstrate the different characteristics of text messages (positive versus negative valence and features such …

The Implications Of Gendered Wording In Job Advertisements At Csb/Sju And Women’S Underrepresentation In Stem, Sidela Nyuga, Majel Baker Apr 2024

The Implications Of Gendered Wording In Job Advertisements At Csb/Sju And Women’S Underrepresentation In Stem, Sidela Nyuga, Majel Baker

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Women's underrepresentation in STEM is due to many factors, one of which includes the mode of STEM job advertising. The scarcity of women in STEM careers might be thought to be their choice, but previous research suggests that wording in job ads influences women’s choices. Job ads can contain masculine-stereotypical wording, which has a negative impact on women’s interest in applying (Gaucher et al., 2011). Moreover, platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn are used to target men for STEM jobs opportunities, reducing women’s opportunity to apply to these jobs (Imana et al., 2021; Tamime et al., 2022).

This present study examined …

Fight To Ignite: The Impacts Of Climate Change On Prescribed Burning In Pine Forests, Chloe Anderson May 2023

Fight To Ignite: The Impacts Of Climate Change On Prescribed Burning In Pine Forests, Chloe Anderson

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Prescribed burning is a strategy that has been used to manage the health of forest ecosystems for thousands of years. While these practices have certainly evolved over time, recent impacts of climate change are threatening the future feasibility of implementing fire in forest management altogether. This ecological process is essential to restoring and maintaining a healthy forest ecosystem as fire acts as a catalyst by returning nutrients to soil and promoting healthy regrowth. Prescribed burning prepares forestlands for reforestation by destroying weeds and other competitive species so that native and fire-dependent species can reproduce. This process also lessens the fuel …

The Relationship Between Workplace Diversity Climate, Turnover Intention, And Thriving In College Counseling Centers, Jahmai Bastian, Josie Braun, Cate Duffey, Majel Baker

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

College and university counseling centers need a more diversified staff to provide services that accommodate the needs of the increasingly racially and ethnically diverse student body (Kitzrow 2023). This study hypothesized that 1) positive workplace diversity-climate is negatively correlated with turnover intention, 2) workplace diversity-climate is positively correlated with thriving at work, and 3) thriving at work is negatively correlated with turnover intention. An online survey was sent out to a sample of counseling staff (e.g., psychologists, therapists) working at college counseling centers across the U.S. and Canada (N = 488). Participants completed modified versions of the Thriving at Work …

To Buy Or Not To Buy: The Ethics Of College Clothing, Mariko Hermerding

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Look back and consider your past and current wardrobe. If you are a college graduate, most likely along the way you owned an article of college apparel. It could be something as simple as a pair of socks with your school’s logo on it. Have you ever considered where you received that piece of clothing from? Have you considered who made it for you? In this essay, research will be conducted to figure out and establish where the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference colleges source their clothes from, how ethically made they are, and suggest sustainable alternatives.

Stirring Up The Soil: Best Practices To Mitigate Lead Exposure In Contaminated Soils Within Omaha, Nebraska, Mckenzie Blaine

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Cities across the nation in the United States experience problems associated with lead contamination in their urban soils due to industrial pollution. In many instances, the emission of lead particles occurred – unregulated – for several decades. Though there are federal cleanup efforts to help minimize the negative impacts of lead contamination for the public in the United States, the efforts are designated for specified criteria and thus do not reach all areas which need to be remediated. In order to perform proper lead abatement practices, local organizations must take initiative on projects which meet the needs and demands of …

Creativity And Performance: The Effects Of Working In Groups Versus Working Individually, John Beckius Apr 2018

Creativity And Performance: The Effects Of Working In Groups Versus Working Individually, John Beckius

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

I-O Psychologists are interested in factors that can affect work productivity and performance among an organization’s employees. Some professionals argue that two heads are better than one when it comes to being innovative and coming up with creative solutions, however, others state the opposite given that group settings tend to result in many hindering factors such as conformity and production blocking. In the present study, we attempted to determine whether or not there is a differential impact of working groups and working individuals on creativity and performance. This was measured through a divergent thinking task based on Guilford’s Alternative Uses …

Olympic Success: Built, Born, Or Bought?, Jacob Ney Apr 2018

Olympic Success: Built, Born, Or Bought?, Jacob Ney

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

During the Olympic Games, a ranked medal count often compares performance by country, but this system may be an unfair and inaccurate representation of Olympic success. To fairly balance how this success is measured, factors such as a country’s participation, population, and GDP must be considered. These choropleth, Robinson-projected world maps display normalizations of these factors using medal count and participant information from every summer Olympics since 1896, as well as data on each country’s current population and GDP.

Testing The Production Effect In Memory For Words, Jack Her, Kristie Vang, Xia Vang

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)

Previous research on the production effect shows that reading words aloud improves people’s memory for those words compared to words read silently. The purpose of our study was to extend this research to see if reading words aloud would improve people’s memory compared to hearing someone else say the words aloud. We also wanted to see if the production effect depends on the type of words (abstract or concrete words) and the type of memory test (recall or recognition). Participants were shown 30 words, one at a time, with each word presented for 4 seconds on a PowerPoint slide. Half …
