Open Educational Resources (OER) are one form of digital scholarship used across the country to make education more accessible to students by removing barriers to essential course materials (such as textbooks and supplementary readings). This case shows how one university has taken steps to increase the prominence of OER in classrooms on campus while engaging in a statewide pilot project.

Illuminating The Process Of Youth Development: The Mediating Effect Of Thriving On Youth Development Program Outcomes, Mary E. Arnold, Ryan J. Gagnon
Illuminating The Process Of Youth Development: The Mediating Effect Of Thriving On Youth Development Program Outcomes, Mary E. Arnold, Ryan J. Gagnon
Publications
This paper examines the relationship between the developmental contexts of youth programs and resultant developmental outcomes, and explores whether the developmental process of thriving mediates this relationship. Developmental context is proposed to consist of three elements: (1) youth sparks, (2) program quality, and (3) developmental relationships. Combined, these elements describe youth program context more precisely than in previous studies, allowing for a clearer understanding of effective program settings. Likewise, the process of youth thriving provides insight into the mechanism through which youth development occurs. Sufficient model fit, convergent validity, and discriminant validity of the 4-H Thriving scale were determined through …

Internet trolls don’t troll. Not the professionals at least. Professional trolls don’t go on social media to antagonize liberals or belittle conservatives. They are not narrow minded, drunk or angry. They don’t lack basic English language skills. They certainly aren’t “somebody sitting on their bed that weighs 400 pounds,” as the president once put it. Your stereotypical trolls do exist on social media, but the amateurs aren’t a threat to Western democracy
Professional trolls, on the other hand, are the tip of the spear in the new digital, ideological battleground. To combat the threat they pose, we must first understand …
From Bones To Drones: The Challenge Of Checking Out Unicorns, Rodger Bishop, Fredda Owens, Suzanne Rook Schilf
From Bones To Drones: The Challenge Of Checking Out Unicorns, Rodger Bishop, Fredda Owens, Suzanne Rook Schilf
Presentations
Modern academic library shelves are no longer limited to books and media—collections today include “unicorns,” which we define as unique items such as DSLR cameras, VR headsets, puppets, modeling kits—even skeletons and drones. Supporting students’ ever-changing curricular and research needs requires constant creativity, problem solving, and technology expertise.
Partnerships across campus ensure close attention to the nuances of university curriculum. For Access Services, curating robust physical reserve collections involves purchasing considerations, special shelving and packaging, customized loan periods, reservation systems, and careful maintenance of high-use, delicate items.

Connecting Collections With Equitable, Diverse, And Inclusive Metadata, Jessica Serrao
Presentations
Equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives are becoming commonplace as a strategy to address bias, racism, discrimination, oppression, and privilege in the historic record and improve discovery and access to rare and unique materials. SAA’s Statement on Diversity and Inclusion and Core Values of Archivists reflect the importance of these initiatives. This presentation will explore some of the practices archives employ to improve EDI in digital collections metadata, which may be the key to connecting related materials of underrepresented groups across disparate collections. Attendees will then learn about an in-progress quantitative research study that will evaluate academic archives’ practices aimed …

“Tell Us What You Think:” Results Of An Exploratory Study Of Student Feedback On An Academic Library, Anne Grant, Jessica Serrao, Maggie Mason Smith
Presentations
Last September, the Dean of Libraries created the Campus Feedback Task Force to “develop a process by which Clemson Libraries [could] solicit online and in-person feedback from students, faculty and staff on campus.” In response, Task Force members prepared a marketing strategy and three methods of soliciting feedback: online via our 10 Days to Have Your Say blog and social media, and in-person through tabling across campus. This presentation discusses the details of how the Task Force met its charge, summarizes the 804 responses received, reflects on what worked and what we would do differently next time, and outlines the …

Mobile Media Beyond Mobile Phones, Jordan Frith, Didem Özkul

In this introduction, we argue for an expanded focus in mobile media and communication studies (MMCS) that accounts for the many types of mobile media that affect our lives. We begin by pointing out that mobile phone/smartphone research has dominated MMCS as a field. That focus makes sense, but it runs the risk of MMCS essentially turning into “smartphone studies,” which we argue would limit our impact. To make that case, we identify a few examples of the types of oft-ignored technologies that could add to the depth and breadth of MMCS research (e.g., RFID [radio frequency identification] tags, the …

Are Academic Archives Championing Edi Initiatives In Digital Collections Metadata Practices?, Jessica Serrao
Presentations
This poster covers an in-progress research study that plans to examine the influence of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives on digital collections metadata practices of academic archives. EDI initiatives for libraries and archives are becoming commonplace as a strategy to address bias, racism, discrimination, oppression, and privilege. SAA’s Statement on Diversity and Inclusion and Core Values of Archivists reflects the importance of these initiatives. This study will include a survey of metadata practitioners to gauge: how EDI initiatives are incorporated into digital collections descriptive metadata; whether they align with institutional and/or library-wide EDI strategies; and how certain practices were …

This workshop outlines the basics of library science research. It covers the most common research designs used in librarianship and how those relate to the research question, how to plan a research project and the components of a research proposal, and provides a list of resources for each step of the research process. This presentation was given to Clemson Libraries employees as part of the 2019 Summer Workshop Series.

Describing Historical Images: Improving Access To Digital Collections With Local Subjects, Jessica Serrao, Janice Prater, Scott Dutkiewicz, Charlotte Grubbs
Presentations
Libraries are at the forefront of creating rich quality metadata to ensure communities can access, learn, and understand their shared histories. The Metadata and Monographic Resources Team (MMRT) is tasked with describing and providing access points to Clemson Libraries’ Digital Collections. Metadata decisions made by MMRT affect how community members discover, access, and use these materials. Photographic images, in particular, pose challenges if they lack descriptive information or historical context. If descriptions are provided, they often align with the historically white male majority, naming high level individuals and leaving out minority and marginalized peoples.
This poster covers challenges and decisions …

Social Shaping Of Mobile Geomedia Services: An Analysis Of Yelp And Foursquare, Jordan Frith, Rowan Wilken
Social Shaping Of Mobile Geomedia Services: An Analysis Of Yelp And Foursquare, Jordan Frith, Rowan Wilken

In their book, Location-Based Social Media: Space, Time and Identity, Leighton Evans and Michael Saker remark on the apparent ‘death’ of location-based social networks, suggesting that location-based social networks can now be understood as ‘a form of “zombie-media” that animates and haunts other media platforms’. In this article, we use this perspective as a point of departure for a social shaping of technology-informed analysis of two key geomedia platforms: Yelp and Foursquare. With Yelp approaching its 15th year of service and Foursquare approaching its 10th anniversary, this article provides a timely opportunity to (re-)examine the significance of Yelp and …
