Review Of: Australian Rock Art: A New Synthesis, Paul Faulstich

Rock-art studies have now come of age, and are among the most fertile explorations of expressive culture. Through an interdisciplinary approach to its study, we have expanded our knowledge into the realms of aesthetics, belief systems, and social structures. Australian rock an is particularly significant, since it is a visual expression that has been practiced by contemporary as well as prehistoric Aboriginals. Robert Layton's most recent book -his "new synthesis" of Australian rock art- is an ambitious and successful analysis of Aboriginal rock art from across the continent.
Psychosocial Variables As Prospective Predictors Of Violent Events Among Adolescents, Alan W. Stacy, Steve Sussman, Clyde W. Dent, Dee Burton, Brian R. Flay

Violent events are main causes of mortality among children and include intentional (e.g., homicide) and unintentional (e.g., accidents) circumstances. This study investigated the prediction of the self-reported occurrence of 14 violent events among eighth-grade youth from psychosocial variables measured in these same youth in seventh grade. Psychosocial variables ineluded tobacco and alcohol use, demographic variables, interpersonal variables such as family conflict, and intrapersonal variables such as risk taking. An iterative procedure, involving selection of a set of predictors and a test of the correlation of the set of predictors to the set of events, provided support for an extension of …

This paper is concerned with the organic derivation and primary meaning of Pleistocene finger flutings; I propose that in order to gain insight into the significance of the flutings, we must attempt an understanding of the physical and mental contexts in which they emerged. I suggest that finger flutings provided a cultural record in the Pleistocene which documented thought and action, and made it ready for reflection. Through the process of finger fluting, the human 'self' was objected and reality was modified in the experience of self-consciuosness. I argue that finger flutings, like language, were employed to discover and convey …
The Transition To Fourth Epoch War, Robert J. Bunker
The Transition To Fourth Epoch War, Robert J. Bunker

Based upon the influence that energy sources have exerted on the evolution of warfare over the broad expense of history, this author identifies eight basic trends that he believes will characterize "the changing face of war" through the early 21st century.

The Soldier Integrated Protective Ensemble (SIPE) Advanced Technology Demonstration (ATD) has proven to be an ambitious and farsighted project. It is based on a modular subsystem approach which paves the way toward the development of a head-to-toe integrated fighting system for the dismounted infantry soldier. This system is composed of the soldier and everything worn, consumed and carried for use in a tactical environment. Having successfully proven itself, the SIPE ATD will now transition into follow-on programs which will field and demonstrate soldier system prototypes.

Rethinking Ootw, Robert J. Bunker
Rethinking Ootw, Robert J. Bunker

This article challenges the concept and, by default, the continuum shown in Figure 1 and the range of military operations in the theater strategic environment (hereafter referred to as the RMO model), which it helps define. To do so, it will address the relationship between the OOTW concept and RMO model, the concept of war underlying AirLand Battle doctrine and OOTW as a flawed concept. It further argues that the RMO model should be replaced by not one, but two new politico-military models as a doctrinal bridge. It is not within this article's scope to attempt to create these models, …
