This paper is a linguistic analysis of symbols in regard to marketing strategies becoming relevant to the Millennial generation. This study aims to examine how technological advances affect Millennial characteristics and behaviors arnd contribute to the growing phenomenon of visual literacy. Research on the topic was synthesized and used to create a survey with various symbols. Utilizing Abdullah and Hubner’s (2006) semiotic design analysis of icons and pictograms, fourteen popular brand name symbols were chosen to be first analyzed and then anonymously named by Millennials. This paper explores the rise of ISIS in the realm of terrorist media and propaganda. It starts off by first examining trends and goals in terrorist use of media in the past, with emphasis on al Qaeda as a particular example. The main differences between al Qaeda and ISIS are reviewed, before a lengthy exploration of major examples of ISIS propaganda is given. Our research project’s purpose is to inform the local community on the ethics and effectiveness as well as the exploitive power of using social media to promote international and domestic causes. We will educate the public and professionals on the responsible use of social media in advocacy and the consequences of its misuse. We will achieve this goal by researching social media movements and their lasting effects in academic journals and major news outlets.
