Antarctica - Much Ado About Nothing?, Paul F. Jean, John-Paul Rosario
Bridgewater Review
Since the Antarctic Treaty came into force in 1961, the signatory states have cooperated in the region and international conflicts have not been allowed to intrude. In Antarctica, politics has indeed made for “strange bedfellows”; included among the major treaty states are the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Argentina and Chile. Yet, Antarctica remains an oasis of stability in spite of the fall of east-west detente, the Falkland/Malvinas Conflict and until recently, a simmering dispute between Chile and Argentina over rights in the Beagle Channel. Recently, however, both external and internal challenges have surfaced which threaten the …

The Elephant And The Mouse: Canada And The United States, John F. Myers, Mary H. Myers
Bridgewater Review
Throughout their history, Canadians have been constantly aware of the Republic to the South. In 1775 the American Revolution spilled over into Canada as the Americans seized Montreal and tried to capture Quebec City. During the War of 1812 Canada received the brunt of American hostility toward Britain, being invaded by the United States at various points along the border, particularly along the New York State frontier. Although successful in repelling the Americans, Canada became very sensitive to her own weakness as contrasted to the growing power of the United States.

Completing The Missing Link: The Economic Impact Of I-495 On Southeastern Massachusetts, Glenn Miller
Bridgewater Review
The long-anticipated final link of Boston’s outer beltway, I-495, was opened in southeastern Massachusetts in November of 1982. South Shore residents who watched enviously as Rt. 128 and the North Shore experienced rapid economic growth and all the benefits (and possible drawbacks) of “high-tech” development, can now anticipate some of those changes in the area between Brockton and New Bedford. The catalyst, according to a wide range of indicators, is the completion of Rt. I-495.
It is generally accepted that access to a major highway provides the impetus for economic development and population growth. The full impact of circumferential beltways, …

The Heroic Image: The Lives And Times Of Superstars In Two Golden Ages Of Sport, Philip T. Silvia Jr.
Bridgewater Review
If the Summer Olympics of 1984 or the yearly Super Bowl extravaganzas are any indication, Americans continue to be sports-obsessed. It has become increasingly important that we reflect about professional athletes and the public's perception of their role in society. I would like to take a subjective, biographical look at four dominant athletes who influenced American civilization during our two Golden Ages of Sport, namely, the 1920s and the late 1960s-1970s.
The Ombudsman: An Institution For The Resolution Of Conflict, Nancy Meymand
The Ombudsman: An Institution For The Resolution Of Conflict, Nancy Meymand
Bridgewater Review
The ombudsman is an independent, nonpartisan third party who assists in grievance resolution. Ombudsmen have traditionally been found in government, but in the 1970s they spread to formal organizations in higher education. health and business. During the 1980s, the principal role of ombudsman. namely mediator, emerged; and apart from ombudsmanship, mediation appears to be playing a more prominent role in conflict resolution now that it did in the seventies.
Mediators have become increasingly important in dealing with neighborhood disputes, and divorce mediation has taken the intimate concerns of the family out of the public arena, assigning responsibility to the disputants …
