Supporting Young Children Through Big Feelings, P. Diane Stoecker

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This is a service-learning project centered around solving the problem of how I can provide support to young children and their adults as they work through big emotions. Specifically, I wrote a children’s book titled My Big Feelings, which tells a narrative from a child's perspective about what they need from their adult as they experience big feelings. The second part of this project is a companion section in the back of the book focusing on emotional intelligence concepts. Included in this section are quick tips, ideas, and other resources designed to help adults provide support for children as they …

Improving Childhood Literacy, Amy Williams

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This paper discusses my approach and solution to the problem of declining literacy rates among children in recent years. While there are many contributing factors, COVID lockdown and the reliance on technology have played a part. The approach to this problem was to start within my own community by building a Little Free Library. This library gave children the opportunity to have increased access to reading materials that interest them, free of charge. The children were also incentivized to read by the initiation of a summer reading program that included prizes for completion of a reading log. By generating interest …

The Simplicity Of Connecting With Our Children, Mindy M. Salcido

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Connecting with our children is something that many parents struggle with but often overthink. It is often through being purposeful and present that we create times to connect. To help parents and children find fun ways to connect, I wrote a book showing a mom and son doing everyday activities together. In addition to completing a reading of this book to local families in my community, I also created a brochure that provided a list of activities as well as some of the benefits of connecting with our children. At the completion of the reading event, we had a Q …

Remodeling To Process Emotions Through Teamwork, Heidi E. Sistad

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

As an undergrad at Boise State University, nothing could have prepared me or my family for all that would take place in our family over the past three and half years. Most recently, a dilemma in my family’s life has been trying to heal and move on from a messy separation and divorce. In considering my project, I really wanted to find a way to give back to my children in a way that could help lift their spirits and show them that all the struggle has been for the betterment of our family. The garage was the last area …

Emotional Intelligence: Benefits Within The Classroom, Taylor M. Garber

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Since the pandemic arose in 2020, schools have lived in a world of unknown. From in school classes to online zoom meetings, teachers have had to adjust their teaching methods leaving them burnt out and frustrated. With hopes of breaking through this gray area, introducing the idea of Emotional Intelligence in schools surrounding Valley County, could greatly impact their path back to normalcy. I have created a prototype for schools surrounding my community. With the first launch happening in September, I am hopeful that this prototype can then be used in other schools as well. This project consists of a …
