Local and regional authority files exist to cover gaps in national and international authority files. These types of authority files should not exist alone if they are going to be fully utilized by other institutions that may have resources about the same individuals or topics. This article discusses how the Western Name Authority File, a regional controlled vocabulary of personal names and corporate bodies, can link to larger authority files such as the Library of Congress Name Authority File and Wikidata. Workflows and issues encountered with linking this local authority file to larger authority files are discussed.

Authority control in libraries has always been a collaborative effort, but that collaboration has usually been among librarians. Librarians have considered themselves the experts on forming data strings that hewed to an exacting set of standards opaque to all but a small number of gatekeepers who have been through NACO training. In the process of creating personal name authority records, NACO participants usually do not attempt to contact people for whom authorized names are being established, even when the person is known to be alive and contact information is readily available. The most fun part of cataloging, authority control, is the identity management work performed to maintain consistent access points throughout a library's database. It is increasing in importance as metadata schemas and linked data applications evolve. University of Kentucky has developed multiple strategies for maintaining authority control and most recently, has undertaken NACO training! Our new experimental workflows post-training will be discussed.

The prospect of contributing to an authority file used by libraries throughout the United States and beyond may be somewhat daunting in itself. However, participation in the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO) may be within your library’s reach. Since joining the program in November 2001, catalogers at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) Libraries have found that many rewards and few drawbacks come with NACO membership.
