The Utah Valley University Library provides information literacy instruction via online tutorial, class workshops, and a for-credit course (CLSS 1050). In Fall 2014, CLSS 1050 was paired with a general psychology course (PSY 1010) in a learning community. Student performance on three assignments was assessed in comparison to the work of students who were not members of the learning community by a team of three librarians and two UVU staff members as part of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Assessment in Action project. In early 2012 three librarians at Pepperdine University Libraries began creating a plan to remodel the library instruction classroom on the main campus in Malibu. This campus primarily serves about 3,500 private-school undergraduates in Business, Communication, Humanities, Natural Science, Religion, Social Science, and Fine Arts. The primary goal of redesigning the library classroom was to support the new active learning approaches that librarians were beginning to incorporate into their information literacy pedagogy. Librarians at National Louis University have been engaged with stakeholders for the past four years to integrate Information Literacy into the undergraduate curriculum that goes beyond traditional instruction. The outcome was a 2 credit course on Digital Information Literacy now required in three undergraduate degree programs. The success of this course resulted in the creation of additional credit courses tailored to the learning outcomes of specific programs. We have learned from this process how to strategically discuss Information Literacy with academic departments. This session will provide an overview of NLU Librarians experience to develop a new teaching model that enhanced traditional library instruction through embedding in online courses and new courses on digital information literacy. Research has shown that educational games can have positive impacts on student learning and motivation. The success of a game played in a library instruction class depends on the type of game selected, the development of learning outcomes, and the flexibility of the librarian during class. This article explains the benefits to students and librarians of using games, discusses the development and use of a Jeopardy-style game, and provides practical tips for librarians interested in developing and incorporating games into one-time library instruction sessions.
