Youth activists around the world are demanding urgent climate action from elected leaders. The annual United Nations climate change negotiations, known as COPs, are key sites of global organizing and hope for a comprehensive approach to climate policy. Drawing on participant observation and in-depth interviews at COP25 in 2019, this research examines youth climate activists’ priorities, frustrations and hopes for creating just climate policy. Background:The experiences of resilience and intersectionality in the lives of contemporary sexual and gender minority youth (SGMY) are important to explore. SGMY face unique experiences of discrimination in both online and offline environments, yet simultaneously build community and seek support in innovative ways. SGMY who identify as transgender, trans, or gender nonconforming and have experiences with child welfare, homelessness, or immigration have been particularly understudied. The aim of this paper is to illuminate findings of disclosure experiences for youth living with chronic illness using a non-categorical approach. The findings were derived from a larger qualitative study framed by social constructivist grounded theory that sought to understand youth's involvement in healthcare decision-making in the context of chronic illness. Fifty-four youth participated in the study, ranging from 9 to 24 years. Three main themes representing the youth's perspectives and experiences of disclosing chronic illness were identified: (1) disclosure is central to the illness experience; (2) spectrum of disclosure; and (3) navigating others' reactions to disclosure. This study examined the role of positive youth development programming and individual-level characteristics in promoting critical reflection (CR) in youth and adolescent participants. CR refers to the analytical component of critical consciousness (CC), or the exercise of challenging institutional practices that systemically marginalize or oppress certain subgroups. Survey and interview data were analyzed from at-risk high school students (N=250) participating in an after-school program across six sites in urban areas in the United States. The discourse on youth political participation tends to focus narrowly on disengaged, apathetic and troublesome youth. The Emerging Leaders Program is a series of workshops targeted at Hispanic and immigrant first-generation students geared towards improving the likelihood they enroll in college. The present study uses different regression techniques and matching algorithms that incorporate propensity scores to estimate the average treatment effect on the treated of the Emerging Leaders Program. This study used participants from the High School Longitudinal Survey of 2009 to create a synthetic control group, Emerging Leaders Program student applications for data on participants, and the National Student Clearinghouse for college enrollment data. Critical consciousness refers to an individual’s awareness of oppressive systemic forces in society, a sense of efficacy to work against oppression, and engagement in individual or collective action against oppression. In the past few decades, interest in critical consciousness as a resource that may promote thriving in marginalized people has grown tremendously. This article critically examines the results of a systematic review of 67 studies of critical consciousness in children and adolescents, published between 1998 and 2019. The collection of oral histories presented in this project explores the variety of ways that multiply marginalized people interpret their existence within larger systemic structures of oppression. Through of lens of intersectionality, resistance, and queerness, I argue that only through personal interpretation, how one chooses to explain themselves, can we genuinely understanding the experiences of the multiply marginalized.
