We’Re All In This Together. Using Systems Thinking And Data Visualization To Influence The Ordering Habits Of Liaisons, Jamie G. Hazlitt

LMU Librarian Publications & Presentations

Liaison work is a secondary role for most of the librarians at the William H. Hannon Library at Loyola Marymount University, and although each librarian takes this responsibility seriously, the task of ordering books is often one that gets put off throughout the busy Fall semester. Although the library's approval plan keeps current materials across all subject areas coming in a relatively steady stream throughout the year, over 50% of our books still come in through title-by-title liaison selection. Liaison procrastination historically resulted in a deluge of book orders - often triggered by increasingly insistent reminders from the acquisitions and …

The Future Of Open Access Journals In Academic Libraries: A Survey On Current Practices And A Blueprint For Collection Development (Survey Data), Barbara M. Pope

Faculty Submissions

Print journals collection development is a long-standing academic library role, whose support of university curriculum and research is essential. However, academic libraries have weathered difficult collection development decisions due to costs and strained budgets. As technology has given rise to online journals and space is reallocated, libraries have shifted focus to online journals. In addition, some academic libraries select open access journals to supplement subscriptions, but lack criteria. Furthermore, academic libraries are challenged by some open access journals’ predatory practices, unreliable access, and lacking peer review. This article explores academic libraries’ open access journals collection development and provides a blueprint.

Conducting A Large-Scale Weeding Project In An Academic Library: Purpose, Plan, And Process, Kyle Olney

Faculty Scholarship – Library Science

According to Rebecca Vnuk, author of Weeding Handbook: A Shelf-By-Shelf Guide (American Library Association, 2015), “Weeding helps a library thrive.” We all want our libraries to thrive, yet for many of us weeding is one of the last activities we want to do. For others, the task may simply seem too daunting to even know where to begin. Add to this the pressure to clear space for a new campus initiative and the work can quickly become overwhelming. This presentation looks at a multi-year weeding project at Olivet Nazarene University’s Benner Library that ultimately resulted in the withdrawal of 30,000 …

Graphic novels are a growing literary form with a growing audience. This presentation will describe how two academic librarians, one from Technical Services and the other from Public Services, combined forces to combat a common enemy: a measly collection of graphic novels that no one could find nor wanted to check out. With support from library Administration and on campus partners, our graphic novel collection went from several dozen items scattered throughout the building to almost 190 volumes in one central location. Presenters will provide best practices and lessons learned, including how to recognize the difference between graphic novels and …

The dearth of indigenous knowledge (IK) in libraries in general and in South Africa in particular is cause for concern as the situation can lead to its demise. Awareness of the usefulness of IK in various aspects of community life is well documented. It is imperative that public libraries, as gateways to information and knowledge should be at the forefront of facilitating access to all knowledge, including IK. The article explores how public libraries in South Africa can facilitate access to indigenous knowledge. Data for this multiple case study was collected through semi-structured interviews with directors of provincial library services. …

A Review Of The Acquisitions Budget: Examining And Modifying The Fund Structure To Advocate For Open Access, Lanette Garza

Library Faculty Research

Budget allocation decisions have become far more complex and difficult. One obvious reason is the shift from print to electronic purchases. This along with the lack of increased funding to sustain these collections has created a scenario in which all purchasing decisions need to be made with precise planning. This article examines the fund structure review conducted at the Trinity University Coates Library, which sought to identify best practices and better capture how much is being spent on resources beyond print and electronic. More specifically, the review sought to include open access (OA) resources into the fund structure.

New Perspectives On Congressional Collections: A Study Of Survey And Assessment, Maurita Baldock, J. Wendel Cox

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

Archivists have grappled with the processing and management challenges of congressional collections, but have spent less time exploring the use of these collections or their utility for research outside traditional topics and disciplines. A survey of Native American collection materials led to a new understanding of the vast scholarly potential of congressional collections. Likewise, a general assessment of special collections revealed the popularity of congressional collections and the nature of their …

Targeting Collection Assessment Data To The Intended Audience, Kimberly S. Westbrooks, Paula Barnett-Ellis Jan 2018

Targeting Collection Assessment Data To The Intended Audience, Kimberly S. Westbrooks, Paula Barnett-Ellis

Research, Publications & Creative Work

At Jacksonville State University, additions of new degree programs have added greater importance to collection assessments as a guide for future budget planning and the accreditation process. Collection assessments give librarians and administrators an overview of the library’s collections, justification for expenditures, and disclosure of areas in need of strengthening. Assessments highlight resources and their access points, while justifying the resources’ presence to faculty stakeholders. An approachable assessment can be a valuable tool to introduce or reacquaint faculty with the collection development process and with classroom and research resources.

The Roma And Documentary Film: Considerations For Collection Development, Rebecca Schiff Jan 2018

The Roma And Documentary Film: Considerations For Collection Development, Rebecca Schiff

Publications and Research

This paper explores the issues and criteria involved in developing a creditable documentary film collection about the Romani people for an academic library. Throughout their history, the Roma, or Gypsies, have dealt with biased, romanticized versions of their story, perpetuated by stereotypes found in legend, literature, song, and film. The expectation in the present undertaking is that the evidence coming from documentary films provides an effective antidote for misrepresentations. The paper reviews pertinent literature, suggests a selection process, and furnishes commentaries on individual titles as they relate to a framework based on the Romani historical and geographical narrative. A critical …
