The Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) is a research program which is owned and operated by the Mars Society. The MDRS is located in Hanksville, Utah which hosts simulations that are typically two weeks long for professional scientists and engineers as well as college students of all levels, in training for human operations specifically on Mars. This space analog facility is in isolation, allowing for rigorous field studies regarding research that represents a true mission as if the crew members are conducting a real expedition on Mars. The 21st century has brought an increasing demand for expertise in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Although strides have been made towards increasing gender diversity in several of these disciplines, engineering remains primarily male dominated. In response, the U.S. educational system has attempted to make engineering curriculum more engaging, informative, and welcoming to girls. Specifically, project-based and design-based learning pedagogies promise to make engineering interesting and accessible for girls while enculturating them into the world of engineering and scientific inquiry. Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

This study examined the potential relationship of accessible hands-on science learning experiences to the development of positive beliefs concerning one’s capacity to function in the sciences and motivation to consider science as a college major and career. Findings from Likert survey items given before and after engaging in accessible hands-on science laboratories show that students who were blind or had low vision (BLV) were more likely to agree with the following items after engaging in accessible science experiences: 1) I plan on enrolling as a science major in college; 2) My educational experiences, so far, have given me the …

Cedarville University’s solar boat racing team, which has won nine world solar splash titles, hopes to build its next boat so that it will “fly on water.”

Leading this effort for Cedarville are former solar boat team members Elijah Thompson and Caleb Jacobson, both 2016 mechanical engineering graduates. They and four other engineering students submitted a 20-page technical article introducing their recent breakthrough in hydrofoil design to the International Hydrofoil Society. Their work netted them an honorable mention on their website and a $1,000 prize.

The Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas embarked on providing ethics instruction to incoming graduate students in the form of a mandatory workshop. The College has a diverse graduate student population, including a sizable international component, who are enrolled in several M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs within four departments. Faculty felt that training in ethics was needed to better prepare incoming students for successful graduate studies and working professionally after graduation. Therefore, a standalone workshop was developed that covered four major topics: Research Ethics, Computer Coding Ethics, Publishing Ethics, and Intellectual Property. The …

Robotics Team Returns To Asee Competition, Mark D. Weinstein

A team of freshmen and sophomore engineering students from Cedarville University will look to capture the school’s fourth-straight national title in this year’s Autonomous Robotics Competition at the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) Conference in New Orleans on Monday, June 27.

Cedarville’s team won last year’s competition in Seattle with a score of 291.51 points — well ahead of second-place Monroe Community College (226.63). Cedarville was the only team (out of 15) to complete a successful run in the actual competition portion of last year’s event.

Super-Mileage Team Shines At Eco-Marathon, Mark D. Weinstein

The Shell Eco-Marathon challenges students to design, build and drive ultra-energy-efficient vehicles. The Motor City was the backdrop to this competition that featured universities and high schools throughout the world.

By the time the competition concluded, Cedarville University’s super-mileage car team continued its demonstration of excellence in developing fuel-efficient vehicles at the 2016 Shell Eco-Marathon Americas with a second place finish in the Urban Concept division and sixth place in the Prototype Gasoline category. The event was held April 23-24 event in downtown Detroit.

The study examined exposure trends amongst a specific cohort of workers (n=55), loosely defined as "engineering trade" employees, but essentially comprising fitter and boilermaker trade disciplines at a variety of workplaces (n =6). Workers' perceptions of their noise exposure was surveyed, and factors likely to influence positive or negative HPD use behaviours. The goal being to identify determinants of Hearing Protective Device (HPD) use behaviour and potentially apply targeted interventions to increase the efficacy of a workplace's Hearing Conservation Program (HCP). To be fully prepared for the professional workplace, Engineering students need to be able to effectively communicate. However, there has been a growing concern in the field about students' preparedness for this aspect of their future work. It is argued that online writing tools, to engage numbers of students in the writing process, can support feedback on and development of writing in engineering on a larger scale. Through interviews and questionnaires, this study explores engineering academics' perceptions of writing to better understand how online writing tools may be integrated into their teaching. Little has been done in literature on the structure of Engineering Asset Management System (EAMS) and its relationship to production and organizational strategy. In this paper, the position of an EAMS within an organizational structure and its strategic role within a production organizations strategy has been explored. It is argued that the structure and mechanism of EAMS play a key role in directing the production process and linking to the organizational strategy: the absence or inadequacies of asset-related activities cause insufficient production performance that negatively impacts the strategic achievement.
