Organic And Sustainable: The Emergence, Formalization And Performance Of A September 11th Disaster Relief Organization, David A. Campbell
Organic And Sustainable: The Emergence, Formalization And Performance Of A September 11th Disaster Relief Organization, David A. Campbell
Public Administration Faculty Scholarship
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, spawned 252 new nonprofit organizations. We know little about these organizations, including how they emerged, formalized, met constituents' expectations for immediate performance, and ultimately survived. This article explores these issues through a case study of one successful organization, the Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund. Using concepts from disaster, organizational ecology, and entrepreneurship research, the analysis identifies six propositions that link these literatures, notably the role of resource acquisition in formalization and the role of legitimacy in both fund development and organizational endurance. The study contributes new knowledge about the role of collaboration …

Cn U Hlp? Collaborative Chat Reference And Instruction, Gayatri Singh, Kenneth Furuta
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008
Not only has the use of chat reference created new learning spaces, studies have shown that instruction regularly occurs during the virtual interactions. However, these studies have focused on a single institution’s experience and do not address the additional challenges faced by a consortium of libraries. Ask a UC Librarian, staffed by seven of the ten University of California campuses, is an example of a consortium exploring this new learning space together. We will present the challenges, rewards, and what we have learned in building a supportive literacy learning environment that provides instruction to students via collaborative chat reference.

Esl Students Cross The Academic Threshold: How Interpreting Demographic Data Builds Information Literacy Skills - Three Perspectives, Penny Bealle, Kathleen Cash-Mconnell, Bernadette Garcia
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008
Our successful English as a Second Language (ESL) project at Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) fosters academic literacy by infusing information and computer literacy skills into an advanced speaking course. In our presentation, library and ESL faculty, plus an ESL administrator will share insights on how advanced ESL students construct a demographic study. The demographic assignment requires students to synthesize information and images into oral presentations. Each student’s final project is the culmination of an incremental process that includes four library workshops. During the workshops, students research U.S. cities and form a learning community as they discuss trends in demographic …
The Multicultural Classroom: Plan, Build, Renew - Librarian As Constructivist Architect, Kimberly Davies Hoffman, Susan Preston Norman
The Multicultural Classroom: Plan, Build, Renew - Librarian As Constructivist Architect, Kimberly Davies Hoffman, Susan Preston Norman
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008
Of New York State’s largest urban school districts, Rochester ranks lowest with an appalling graduation rate of 39%.1 With goals of keeping our poorest children in school and focusing their futures on college, SUNY Geneseo hosted 50 young “CSI candidates” who worked tirelessly to solve fictitious art thefts. Library research, blogging, public speaking, interviewing, forensic science, and digital photography were among the skills incorporated, forming a solid base of critical literacy for these young scholars. Milne Library helped create an educational yet recreational learning environment by offering instructors, classroom space, technology, potential suspects, and ultimately, one of the indicted “criminals.” …

Vanderbilt Visions: An Exercise In Collaboration, Melinda Brown, Lee Ann Lannom, Amy Stewart-Mailhiot
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2008
Five months before the Fall 2007 semester the Committee on Undergraduate Information Literacy (CUIL) and Vanderbilt Libraries were notified their proposal to present one of the weekly sessions for Vanderbilt Visions, the university’s first-year orientation program, was accepted. Through a collaborative effort, over 30 staff from 5 libraries, the Center for Teaching, the Writing Studio and the Learning Resource Center worked together to design and present a session that focused on intellectual engagement at Vanderbilt and explored the differences between college and high school research. This was the first opportunity for the Libraries to work with our campus partners on …
Collaborative Researchers Or Cold Warriors? The Origins, Activities, And Legacy Of The Smithsonian’S Institute Of Social Anthropology, A. Peter Castro
Collaborative Researchers Or Cold Warriors? The Origins, Activities, And Legacy Of The Smithsonian’S Institute Of Social Anthropology, A. Peter Castro
Journal of International and Global Studies
International research collaboration is increasingly popular, providing many scholarly and practical benefits. These collaborative endeavors also encounter obstacles and costs, including ones involving issues of power and professional ethics. My study seeks to widen our understanding of international collaborative social science research by examining the complex origins, diverse activities, and clouded legacy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Institute of Social Anthropology (ISA). The ISA was an innovative collaborative teaching and research program founded by Julian Steward during World War II to meet many goals, including increasing social science capacity in Latin America, expanding knowledge about contemporary cultural change, strengthening area expertise …
From The Sacred Canopy To The Civic Canopy: Social Transformation Through Dialogue, Collaboration, And Civil Society, William K. Fulton
From The Sacred Canopy To The Civic Canopy: Social Transformation Through Dialogue, Collaboration, And Civil Society, William K. Fulton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The American creed of e pluribus unum--out of many, one--has proven to be an elusive aspiration for societies throughout history. Research suggests that as the diversity of a community increases, its stores of social capital decline. Yet, there exists a growing body of evidence that suggests under certain conditions, patterns of inclusion and collaboration are not only possible but predictable. This project explores theory on effective communication practices, grounded in Habermas's Theory of Communicative Action, as well as research on effective group interaction to suggest that certain communicative capacities and collaborative processes that successfully face the challenge of e …

Building A Cross-Institutional Infrastructure For Technical Services: The Ohiolink Collaborates Project, Barbara J. Strauss, Margaret Maurer, Julie Gedeon
Michael Schwartz Library Publications
Academic libraries in the 21st century must forge new cross-institutional service models based on the knowledge and expertise gained by years of building the shared bibliographic environment. Specific tools, such as cross-institutional best practices, must be developed. OhioLINK’s Database Management and Standards Committee (DMSC) is building the infrastructure that will enable OhioLINK libraries to look across institutional boundaries for inspiration and opportunities. In the spring of 2009 DMSC surveyed OhioLINK libraries to inventory cataloging and technical services expertise. The results are in and are available for use on a day-to-day basis by OhioLINK libraries. OhioLINK’s CollaboraTeS Project facilitates cross-institutional projects …

Authorship, Collaboration, And Art Geography, Martin De La Iglesia
Authorship, Collaboration, And Art Geography, Martin De La Iglesia
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Authorship, Collaboration, and Art Geography" Martin de la Iglesia explores the connection between geographical spaces and works of art, a connection often made, but hardly theorized, by scholars in the field of art geography. He suggests that the link between space and object is established by the creator of the object. A feasible method is devised to determine the creator's geographical identity, which in turn determines which space is assigned to the object. Particularly, the implications of multiple authorship for such a methodology are considered. The procedure is exemplified by a geographical analysis of the comic book …
Environmental Management Reform Through The Watershed Approach: A Multi-Case Study Of State Agency Implementation, Julie H. Mawhorter
Environmental Management Reform Through The Watershed Approach: A Multi-Case Study Of State Agency Implementation, Julie H. Mawhorter
Doctoral Dissertations
In the past two decades, there has been a growing consensus regarding the inadequacies of the existing environmental policy regime and the need for reform to address complex, cross-jurisdictional sustainability challenges, such as nonpoint source pollution. Reform theory has focused on the need for more integrated, collaborative, adaptive, and results-oriented environmental management, while empirical studies have highlighted the wide implementation gap due to an array of institutional obstacles. Key principles and challenges of these four reform dimensions were synthesized in this study and used to assess implementation of the watershed approach by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and states since …
From Qualitative Dissertation To Quality Articles: Seven Lessons Learned, Glenn A. Bowen
From Qualitative Dissertation To Quality Articles: Seven Lessons Learned, Glenn A. Bowen
The Qualitative Report
New scholars frequently face an immense challenge in writing papers for publication. Qualitative research novices, in particular, experience frustration in getting peer-reviewed papers published in top-tier journals. This article is a primer on converting a dissertation based on qualitative research into a journal article. It summarizes seven lessons, learned over a five-year period, about getting published. The lessons focus attention on manuscript content and style, the publication process, and working relationships.

Mba Student Library Collaboration: Progress And Pitfalls., Colleen Hailey, Jill Dixon
Library Scholarship
In 2008, four accounting students taking a graduate marketing class contacted the business and engineering librarians at the Binghamton University (BU) Libraries about collaborating on a market research project. We wholeheartedly agreed — at once recognizing the unique benefits of gaining patron feedback on library resources and services from the student perspective. The project was also an excellent opportunity to support the School of Management and business students with their graduate course work.
With the Libraries serving as their marketing client, the accounting students created a library survey to provide a “better understanding of the typical user and his/her perceptions …

Strategic Planning: Contextual Factors That Facilitated And/Or Challenged The Implementation Of Strategic Planning In Two Nonprofit Organizations, Devadhasan Masilamony Phd
Dissertations
As the nonprofit sector continues to grow in size and importance in American society, successful organizations proactively initiate strategic planning so they can be more responsive to changing circumstances, underlying trends, and shifting demands. At times, however, organizations develop elaborate plans that are never implemented. Unfortunately, there is less systematic research about strategic planning in the nonprofit sector than in the for-profit sector and even less research documenting whether or not the plans that get developed in nonprofit organizations actually get implemented. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand how strategic planning improves the effectiveness of two nonprofit …

Global Project Management: Pedagogy For Distributed Teams, Benjamin Kok Siew Gan, Randy Weinberg, Selma Limam Mansar
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This paper reflects on pedagogy for teaching collaborative global projects across universities in different countries. Over a period of four years, students at three universities - one in the United States, one in Singapore and one in the Middle East - enrolled in a course called "Global Project Management". In this course, coordinated across locations, students experience a global project with distant team members. We describe the course experience and student perceptions of the requisite skills, collaboration tools and challenges bearing on effective global project work.
Historical Geocollaboration: The Implementation Of A Scoring System To Account For Uncertainty In Geographic Data Created In A Collaborative Environment, Anthony D. Contreras
Historical Geocollaboration: The Implementation Of A Scoring System To Account For Uncertainty In Geographic Data Created In A Collaborative Environment, Anthony D. Contreras
Theses and Dissertations
A Geographic Information System (GIS) is an existing tool to create, manage, analyze and visualize data with a spatial component, and is used by many types of organizations in many fields. For most of the tasks and projects within these fields, a GIS provides highly accurate results. Under certain circumstances (Massive Scope, Widespread Expertise and Multivalency), a GIS fails to provide adequate results in the field of historical geography, for example. Crowdsourcing tools like Wikipedia and Open Street Map (OSM) address some of these issues, but not all, and introduce new problems. This project focuses on geographic data dealing with …

Writing Center And Library Collaboration: A Telephone Survey Of Academic Libraries, Lily Todorinova
Lily Todorinova
Writing and researching are highly interrelated processes and there is much overlap between the goals and responsibilities of writing center staff and librarians. There is little evidence, however, that partnership between writing centers and libraries has been instituted as standard practice in academic institutions. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to explore the current state of the relationship between the writing center and the library. A telephone survey was administered to librarians in a sample of 268 academic institutions. The results indicated that only 26.7% of libraries actively collaborate which their university’s writing center. A strong majority of the …

Collaborations, Partnerships, Networks. Introduction: From The Personal To The Professional. Interorganizational Partnerships And Networks, Liron Peleg-Hadomi
New England Journal of Public Policy
Often, when I think about the nature of interorganizational partnerships and networks, I find myself thinking about the broader meaning of relationships, which form an integral part of our lives. What is it about relationships that make them so intricate, unique, mysterious, and full of opportunities? What are the components required for building a successful relationship that allows us to grow and develop in the complex world in which we live? Is it the ability to trust one another? Is it the ability to recognize one another’s needs and interests? Or maybe it is the belief that together, we can …
Raising The Gaze, Mary Coonan
Raising The Gaze, Mary Coonan
New England Journal of Public Policy
This article describes how our challenge is to move beyond our current vision. We must move beyond sharing our impressions of the elephant to seeing the elephant within its broader context. This kind of vision requires our joint effort and a willingness to live with uncertainty until clarity emerges through the chaos because we have been willing to look.

Teaming Up: Benefits Of Collaborating With Library Colleagues, Kim Cornell, Lise Doucette, Dan Sich
Western Libraries Presentations
When looking to increase communication and collaboration in our library, we created a team of physical sciences/engineering librarians, library assistants, and administrators. Together, we work on setting priorities, sharing expertise, and developing skills. In three years, we have moved from traditional subject-based instruction responsibilities to working as a team to prepare and co-instruct classes. By sharing with you the benefits of our team-based system to our librarians, library system, and users, we want to inspire you to think about how to implement a similar system in your own library.
The Effects Of Ethnic Diversity, Perceived Similarity, And Trust On Collaborative Behavior And Performance, Jessica Wildman
The Effects Of Ethnic Diversity, Perceived Similarity, And Trust On Collaborative Behavior And Performance, Jessica Wildman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recent issues such as global economic crises, terrorism, and conservation efforts are making international collaboration a critical topic. While cultural diversity often brings with it new perspectives and innovative solutions, diversity in collaborative settings can also lead to misunderstandings and interaction problems. Therefore, there is a pressing need to understand the processes and influences of intercultural collaboration and how to manage the collaborative process to result in the most effective outcomes possible. In order to address this need, the current study examines the effect of ethnic diversity, perceived deep-level similarity, trust, and distrust on collaborative behavior and performance in decision-making …

Student Affairs Connection: Promoting The Library Through Co-Curricular Activities, Kathryn M. Crowe
Collaborative Librarianship
Librarians at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) University Libraries developed the “Student Affairs Connection” program in order to market the Libraries to students in co-curricular settings and to collaborate more closely with the Student Affairs Division. The program also provides the opportunity to seek student input on Libraries’ services and resources and to communicate directly with them in a variety of ways. The program has multiple facets: a liaison program where librarians are assigned to specific student organizations and services such as Student Government and Residence Life, a Student Libraries Advisory Council (SLAC) representing diverse groups of …

K-State Grant Opportunities Encourage Librarian/Faculty Collaborations, Regina M. Beard
Collaborative Librarianship
Academic librarians are expected to reach out to faculty to promote library services to the university community and to represent our departments in library meetings. But beyond these functions, faculty may not consider librarians as potential collaborators, especially on projects unrelated to the library. One prime opportunity for librarian/faculty collaboration at Kansas State University is the Tilford Incentive Grants. The grant’s stated purpose is to “encourage the infusion and assessment of the Tilford multicultural competencies with the educational experiences of our students”. This paper discusses the proposal and outcomes of one such collaboration between a journalism faculty member and the …
