Publications

This issue of Review of Applied Urban Research features "Economic Status in Midcontinent Metropolitan Areas, Third Quarter 1976," by Ralph H. Todd.

During the third quarter of 1976, Midcontinent metropolitan areas experienced the most universal decline in unemployment rates since the monitoring system was initiated for the fourth quarter of 1975. September unemployment rates in all 25 areas were lower than the United States rate, which declined from 8.1 percent during September of 1975 to 7.4 during September of 1976. Only Fargo, Rapid City and Cheyenne experienced unemployment rates higher than during September of 1975. The increase in average weekly …

Origins Of Tolerance: Findings From A Replication Of Stouffer's Communism, Conformity, And Civil Liberties, J. Allen Williams Jr., Clyde Z. Nunn, Louis St. Peter

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This report presents findings from a nationwide replication of Stouffer's classic study of attitudes toward civil liberties. Central to Stouffer's interpretation of the origins of tolerance is his idea that exposure to social and cultural diversity encourages an appreciation of the importance of civil liberties for democracy. Trends in the 1950s suggested that Americans would increasingly be exposed to diversity with the result that the population would become more tolerant in the future. These propositions were examined using education, city size, region, exposure to mass media news, gender, and occupation as indices of exposure to diversity. With the exceptions of …

On Political Tolerance: Comments On "Origins Of Tolerance", Harry J. Crockett

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The continued scalability of a set of attitude items used in national sample surveys separated by 19 years is a remarkable and useful result. In a discipline lacking valid measures of socially important attitudes, such an outcome merits close study and wide dissemination. But exhibiting the stability of Stouffer's tolerance scale is not the prime end of the Williams et al. paper; they pursue an accounting of the "origins of tolerance." Nor is it the prime interest of the larger research from which their paper arises. Our concern in the larger study is with the political tolerance of the American …

"Origins Of Tolerance": Reply To Crockett, J. Allen Williams Jr., Clyde Z. Nunn, Louis St. Peter

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Professor Crockett has described portions of our article as "conceptually barren" and the findings are said to represent "serious distortions" which, if accepted, will lead to "serious misunderstandings." Coming from a respected colleague, these strong words cannot be taken lightly. Nevertheless, after carefully examining his criticisms, we feel they are misplaced.

The Changing Male Role? An Empirical Analysis, Floyd M. Stallings Dec 1976

The Changing Male Role? An Empirical Analysis, Floyd M. Stallings

Masters Theses

The purpose of this project was threefold: first, to review and critique a body of literature on the male sex role, and specifically the male liberation literature; second, to present a discussion of social psychological concepts pertinent to the topic of the male sex role which are often absent in the literature; and third, to conduct an exploratory study to determine if the behaviors and attitudes of the men interviewed were consistent with the themes expounded in the literature.

An open-ended interview schedule based on themes in the male sex role literature was developed. Thirty middle class, married males between …

An Aspect Of The Process Of School Desegregation: The Effects Of Reading Ability Grouping On Social Attractiveness And Peer-Perceived Success, David A. Johnson Nov 1976

An Aspect Of The Process Of School Desegregation: The Effects Of Reading Ability Grouping On Social Attractiveness And Peer-Perceived Success, David A. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Research on the effects of school desegregation has failed to produce conclusive findings. An over emphasis on the outcomes of school desegregation, usually assessed through the use of standardized test scores, has created a situation in which there exists a paucity of studies of the day to day process of school desegregation: instructional practices, student interaction, and teacher behavior in the classroom. More research on the process of school desegregation is needed if its results or outcomes are to become more interpretable.

Integrated Cooperation Within A Grass-Roots Movement’S The Class Emphasis, John C. Leggett, Frances V. Mouldner Nov 1976

Integrated Cooperation Within A Grass-Roots Movement’S The Class Emphasis, John C. Leggett, Frances V. Mouldner

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Under what conditions is it possible for members of different racial groups to cooperate in an integrated sense to build a successful, working class, community based, mutual benefits association -- one with the long-term intent of organizing workplaces where mutual-benefits association members happen to work? Can this inter-racial cooperation occur at all levels of the organization? Given this long term possibility of unionization, an end product not too different from an association-union recently achieved by Caesar Chavez's "NFWA-UFVOC", what are the initial organizational prerequisites for successfully bringing together blacks, whites, Chicanos, Puerto Ricans and others within these local associations?

The Politics Of Drug Addiction: A Comparison Of United States And Chinese Drug Policies Since 1949, Richard Fortmann Nov 1976

The Politics Of Drug Addiction: A Comparison Of United States And Chinese Drug Policies Since 1949, Richard Fortmann

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

During the past decade the increase in drug use and drug addiction in the United States has been viewed with growing alarm. Drug addiction has been compared to a contagious disease, an epidemic which is raging in our cities and towns. Although the rhetoric has become more dramatic, the drug problem is certainly not a new one. This paper is concerned with the historic failure of United States policies to eliminate or even to contain drug abuse and drug addiction. It is the central thesis of this paper that drug addiction is a social disease, and as such is symptomatic …

A Study Of The Career Education Needs Of Freshman And Senior Students In The Midland Independent School District, Randall S. Braddock Nov 1976

A Study Of The Career Education Needs Of Freshman And Senior Students In The Midland Independent School District, Randall S. Braddock

Graduate Theses

This study examined the career education needs of students and obtained information that will be beneficial to those involved in implementing career education into the existing curriculum at the local level. The major problem which this study addressed was the need to gather and evaluate information about learners in terms of their career education needs. Specifically developed for this purpose, the survey test of the Texas Career Education Measurement Series was used to identify student strengths and weaknesses in each of the 9 Basic Learner Outcome Categories for Career Education (Appendix E) and 26 sub-categories. The test was administered to …
