Understanding Educators’ Perceptions Of Mindfulness On Students’ Academic Skills, Behavior, And Overall Well-Being, Sara E. Gottfried
Understanding Educators’ Perceptions Of Mindfulness On Students’ Academic Skills, Behavior, And Overall Well-Being, Sara E. Gottfried
Honors Program Theses and Projects
Research indicates that academic performance and social and emotional well-being are fundamentally interrelated (Schonert-Reichl, Oberle, Lawlor, Abbott, Thomson, Oberlander, & Diamond, 2015). Given that 13-20% of children in the United States experience social and emotional challenges, schools are required to attend to the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students (Maynard, Solis, Miller, & Brendel, 2017). However, students are often unequipped with the skills to effectively cope with stress and resort to behaviors that cause emotional, mental, and physical suffering, all of which thwart the learning process (Schonert-Reichl et al., 2015). Schools warrant interventions that support the whole student, given …

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies
Written, oral, and practical flight tests, along with challenging flying tasks, place pilot trainees in stressful situations. The initial goals of this research were to determine assessment tools for identifying pilot trainees who might perform poorly in stressful flight testing environments, and measure the efficacy of a test anxiety (TA) workshop on anxiety levels and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) knowledge assessments of pilot trainees. The researchers determined that: Scholastic Achievement Test (SAT) scores marginally predict facilitating anxiety levels, and FAA knowledge tests, taken in authentic testing environments, correlate significantly with debilitating anxiety, facilitating anxiety, and FAA exam scores. The researchers …

After the mass terrorism event in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017, the University of Nevada Las Vegas community used the spaces of their school to shelter and heal. During that attack that occurred only three miles away from campus, the library was described as a sanctuary that students reportedly did not want to leave. In an attempt to gain insight into what makes a community space safe and comforting, especially during an attack like the Mandalay Bay shooting, survey data will be collected from UNLV students to evaluate their perceptions of safety within the school’s main branch library. There is also a large amount of research already done on students in general education, but there is a gap in special education. Because of these gaps in the research, it …

This study examined sixty-one Gettysburg College juniors and seniors (31 males, 30 females) to measure how the Big Five personality traits, and whether a student has Type D characteristics, determines if a student is career ready. We collected data through an in-person survey, with questions about personality traits, ambition, career readiness, and demographics. Regression was used to statistically analyze our first hypothesis. The results found that there is a significant positive association between conscientiousness and career readiness, but there is no significant association between extraversion and career readiness. For the second hypothesis, a mediation model was used. We found that …

Rather than presenting at an on-campus forum, we gave our graduate students (both on-campus and off-campus) an opportunity to be able to share their research in an open, online environment. The Graduate Online Symposium allowed our graduate students the chance to record brief 15-minute presentations about their research and creative activities. These digital presentations were then made available …

Justice Studies Theses
Perceptions and voices from high school students on crime, security, and school resource officers is essential information for criminal justice researchers; high school administrators and teachers; and law enforcement agencies that help keep high schools safe. A handful of national surveys have been done (e.g., Madfis, 2015; Coon, 2007) on school safety, security, and police officers in schools; however, limited information has been collected to hear student voices on school crime, security, and school resource officers. Since the post-Columbine era of American history, the topic of school safety has been a concern of administrators and parents. This exploratory research project …
