Organize Your Files Handout, Sandi Caldrone

Libraries Faculty and Staff Creative Materials

Designed for undergraduates but applicable for anyone, this handout consolidates file organization best practices from a variety of Purdue Library Guides. Page one includes tips for organizing coursework and file naming convention guidelines in a simple, easy-to-read format. Page two includes a template for file directory organization, and an exercise for students to create their own directory structure. These file organization guidelines are also intended as an introduction to the foundational principles of data management.

DataONE Sociocultural and Usability & Assessment Working Groups

A content analysis of academic library members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) was conducted to review DataONE’s reach and visibility. The analysis found that most of the academic library members of ARL included a mention of DataONE, and that most of these mentions included a link to a DataONE site.

Ithaka S+R’s Research Support Services Program investigates how the research support needs of scholars vary by discipline and includes reports on history, chemistry, art history, religious studies, agriculture, and public health. In 2017-2018, Ithaka S+R examined the changing research methods and practices of Asian studies scholars conducting research through U.S. institutions. This project was undertaken collaboratively with research teams at 11 academic libraries with the goal of identifying services to better support Asian studies scholars. Recent demands for accountability in ‘data management’ by funding agencies, universities, international journals and other academic institutions have worried many anthropologists and ethnographers. While their demands for transparency and integrity in opening up data for scrutiny seem to enhance scientific integrity, such principles do not always consider the way the social relationships of research are properly maintained. As a springboard, the present Forum, triggered by such recent demands to account for the use of ‘data’, discusses the present state of anthropological research and academic ethics/integrity in a broader perspective.
