This qualitative study uncovers how graduate students use multiple devices to support their academic pursuits, including coursework, group projects, and conducting research. Students often own several devices including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and desktop computers and use these devices in complementary ways to manage workflows, collaborate with colleagues, and support their academic pursuits.

Graduate students preparing electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) encounter a broad range of questions related to copyright—both in terms of their use of copyrighted materials and their own status as copyrightholders. This project seeks to ascertain the extent to which these specific needs are addressed in published library literature, and to make recommendations to fill the gaps.

Purpose - This paper reports on librarians’ experience creating and sustaining a workshop and webinar series for graduate students over the course of four years.
Design/methodology/approach - Difficulties hosting and promoting stand-alone graduate workshops and a collaborative method for planning workshop days and webinars are described in this case study. Attendance data were collected and recorded for each event and additional quantitative data were collected via registration forms and post-event surveys.
Findings - Working collaboratively as a department eased planning and promotional responsibilities, allowing for a sustainable workshops series. Focusing on a limited number of events per semester and developing …

The process of completing a dissertation is stressful—deadlines are scary, editing is hard, formatting is tricky, and defending is terrifying. (And, of course, postgraduate employment is often uncertain.) Now that dissertations are deposited and distributed electronically, students must perform yet another anxiety-inducing task: deciding whether they want to make their dissertations immediately open access (OA) or, at universities that require OA, coming to terms with openness. For some students, mostly in the humanities and some of the social sciences, who hope to transform their dissertations into books, OA has become a bogeyman, a supposed saboteur of book contracts and destroyer …
