The Economics Of Implementing Population Health Strategies: Progress In Public Health Services & Systems Research, Glen P. Mays
The Economics Of Implementing Population Health Strategies: Progress In Public Health Services & Systems Research, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
Successful strategies to scale up and spread complex community-level interventions require an understanding of the resources required for implementation, how best to distribute them among supporting institutions, and how resource consumption and distribution varies across settings. This session reviews methods and early findings from the RWJF’s Public Health Delivery and Cost Studies (DACS) Initiative, which includes 12 inter-related studies examining the causes and consequences of variation in the costs of delivering complex community-level prevention strategies across more than 300 community settings in 12 states. Findings from these studies highlight the value of studying the economics of implementation, the measurement and …

Beyond Classroom Evaluation: Structuring Research For Dissemination, Andrea Falcone, Stephanie Wiegand
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
Librarians often pursue worthwhile classroom evaluations, yet the results of those evaluations do not always reach beyond the water cooler or an administrator’s office door. Whether successful or not, our findings can lead to rapid improvement in instructional methods, but only if we share our knowledge. If the thought of disseminating your research is overwhelming, you are not alone. This interactive session will provide you with techniques for parsing the research process to enable dissemination, especially through formal channels. Participants will draft an action plan for an instruction-related research project, including specific tasks, time horizon, and resource allocation. This session …

To Boldly Go Beyond Downloads: How Are Journal Articles Shared And Used?, Carol Tenopir, Gabriel Hughes, Christian Lisa, Suzie Allard, David Nicholas, Anthony Watkinson, Hazel Woodward, Peter Shepherd, Robert Anderson
School of Information Sciences -- Faculty Publications and Other Works
With more scholarly journals being distributed electronically rather than in print form, we know that researchers download many articles. What is less well known is how journal articles are used after they are initially downloaded. To what extent are they saved, uploaded, tweeted, or otherwise shared? How does this reuse increase their total use and value to research and how does it influence library usage figures? University of Tennessee Chancellor’s Professor Carol Tenopir, Professor Suzie Allard, and Adjunct Professor David Nicholas are leading a team of international researchers on a the project, “Beyond Downloads,” funded by a grant from Elsevier. …

Ending Failures, Showing Results, Improving Population Health: Insights From Research & Reform In The U.S., Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
A growing body of empirical research supports the value of aligning the delivery systems for public health, medical care, and social services for populations with shared needs and risk factors. This presentation reviews selected studies from the field of public health services & systems research (PHSSR) in the U.S. that suggest pathways for achieving greater system alignment in the Canadian context.

Tougher Than Rocket Science, Or Just Messier? Using Research To Improve U.S. Public Health Delivery, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
Advances in the field of public health services & systems research (PHSSR) are incorporating complexity in theory and methods to derive strong inferences about the health and economic effects attributable to public health strategies. Opportunities for comparative international research in Canada and the U.S. promise to strengthen these avenues of inquiry.

Public Health Services Research: Informing Public Health Practice & Policy, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
Heterogeneity in the mechanisms used for organizing and financing public health strategies creates opportunities for comparative effectiveness research (CER) in public health that examine which organization and financing mechanisms work best, for whom, and under what circumstances. Findings from these types of studies have direct utility in shaping public health policy and practice decisions.

The Puzzle Of Heterogeneity In Support For Free Trade, Jeffrey Drope, Abdur Chowdhury
The Puzzle Of Heterogeneity In Support For Free Trade, Jeffrey Drope, Abdur Chowdhury
Economics Faculty Research and Publications
Over time and across countries, researchers have noted frequent and mostly unexplained gender differences in the levels of support for policies of free or freer trade: according to aggregate results from many surveys, women tend to be less favorable toward policies of liberalizing trade than men. Positing an economic security explanation based largely on a mobile factors approach, we ask if it is women generally who are more negative toward trade or rather women who are more economically vulnerable – i.e., women from the scarce labor factor. We utilize data from two recent surveys on individuals’ attitudes toward different facets …

Assessing The Relationships Between Perceived Support From Close Others, Goal Commitment, And Persistence Decisions At The College Level, Renee E. Strom, Matthew W. Savage
Communication Faculty Publications
Research on supportive communication was examined in relation to students’ goals of earning a college degree and their intent to persist. Theories of student departure (Bean, 1985; Tinto, 1993) informed research questions assessing the impact of how social support from family members and friends affected commitment to the goal of graduation and how commitment to the goal of graduation influenced intent to persist. First-year college students completed a questionnaire at 2 time points during their first year of college. Results revealed that initial support from family and friends positively impacted initial commitment to the goal of graduation. Subsequent support from …

To Walk The Earth In Safety 13th Edition (Fy2013), Us Dos Pm/Wra
Global CWD Repository
The 13th edition of To Walk the Earth in Safety describes the programs and partnerships that comprise the U.S. Conventional Weapons Destruction (CWD) Program. Since 1993, the U.S. has led the international donor community in reducing the harmful effects of poorly secured, unstable or illegally traded conventional weapons of war. We have contributed over $2.3 billion to more than 90 countries around the world.
This mission resonates with my own experience. I started my career in Afghanistan, where explosive remnants of war had already claimed thousands of lives. I am proud to be in a position to oversee U.S. efforts …

Informing The “Naive Triangle": Evidence-Based Transformations In New Young Adult Library Spaces, Anthony Bernier

Given recent technological innovations the notion of serving teenage populations obliges libraries to aspire to new design and spatial visions. Youth, historically not deemed entitled to an equitable share of public environments, has frequently been viewed as creating conflict in libraries, or as librarian Lynn Cockett observed, “Inviting young people to a library that is architecturally not prepared to handle normal adolescent behavior can have some pretty negative consequences.” Even under some of the best design processes, however, a kind of “Naïve Triangle” develops: architects, who frequently know little about libraries or youth aesthetics, work with librarians (with little architectural …

Scholarship in teaching and learning demonstrates how academic understanding may be best achieved, and values of civic engagement best inculcated, when class materials are delivered within a experiential context. The goal for instructors, therefore, is to develop pedagogic techniques and teaching platforms that enhance learning by doing by directly engaging students with educational content. Courses that focus on American political processes provide especially fruitful opportunities for such applied learning experiences. In this paper, we discuss and assess experiential learning as facilitated in a pair of undergraduate courses taught at a southern state university that focused on the study of American …
Research Data Management And The Canadian Academic Library: An Organizational Consideration Of Data Management And Data Stewardship, Michael Steeleworthy
Research Data Management And The Canadian Academic Library: An Organizational Consideration Of Data Management And Data Stewardship, Michael Steeleworthy
Library Publications
Research data management (RDM) has become a professional imperative for Canada’s academic librarians. Recent policy considerations by our national research funding agencies that address the ability of Canadian universities to effectively manage the massive amounts of research data they now create has helped library and university administrators recognize this gap in the research enterprise and identify RDM as a solution. RDM is not new to libraries, though. Rather, it draws on existing and evolving organizational functions in order to improve data collection, access, use, and preservation. A successful research data management service requires the skills and knowledge found in a …
