Open Access And The Institutional Repository, Julia Lovett, Andrée Rathemacher

Technical Services Faculty Publications

Over the past year, the University of Rhode Island (URI) has taken some steps towards shifting the default to Open Access for both faculty scholarship and student work. First and foremost, in March 2013, the URI Faculty Senate passed a Harvard-style Open Access mandate. And in February 2013, the Library and the Graduate School began making electronic dissertations and theses openly available through URI’s institutional repository. In this presentation, we will define Open Access policies and discuss why they are important. We will give an overview of our experiences with Open Access advocacy, implementation of policies, and next steps.

Integrated Service Spaces: New Ways Of Assessing Collaboration., Hector Escobar, Heidi Gauder

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Many academic libraries have participated in the growing trend in creating unified service desks, where users visit one desk to get help from a variety of library and other campus services. The University of Dayton’s Roesch Library, however, is exploring a different model. It is piloting a service that lends itself to true integration with external departments. Although unified service desks offer the convenience of one-stop assistance, the various units may still act as silos. Service integration facilitates better cross-training and less confusion for students who may need multiple forms of help in one common area.

The library began to …

Qualitative Engagement Of Nigerian Students And Librarians In The Analysis Of Deviance In Library Utilization, Adediran D. Ikuomola, Rashidi Akanji Okunola, Samuel Olabode Fabunmi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Research on library deviance in Nigeria has largely relied on librarians’ accounts, which often portray students as ‘deviants’ and the libraries as ‘victims’, however we focus on a holistic account which incorporates both students’ and librarians’ narratives in the analysis of deviant behaviours in library utilization. Through observations and interviews the paper highlighted some common trends of deviance and the implication on library utility in selected universities. The study reveals a gap in the security of students’ personal effects, inadequate electricity supply and a wide range of deviant behaviours associated with the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) in …

Assessment Of The Use Of Electronic Resources Among Administrators And Faculty In The University Of Cape Coast., Paulina Nana Yaa Kwafoa, Osman Imoro, Paulina Afful-Arthur

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The importance and significance of electronic resources to teaching and research is widely recognized by many researchers. With the advent of information and communication technologies such as the internet and the web, electronic resources have become a widely accepted scholarly resource for both students and faculty. They have also been shown to be more helpful especially to faculty and distance learners who may have limited access to library resources in traditional formats. Information and communication technologies have transformed most traditional libraries into hybrid libraries storing most of their resources in both print and electronic formats. The study seeks to investigate …

Engaging With Research And Resources In Music History Courses, Jennifer Oates Apr 2014

Engaging With Research And Resources In Music History Courses, Jennifer Oates

Publications and Research

With the ever-expanding sea of resources available to students today, it is now more important than ever to teach students how to navigate, assess, and interpret resources. Given the ease of access to information, students tend to seek out the path of least resistance, most often a Google search and/or Wikipedia. Their unfamiliarity with print resources, such as thematic catalogues, means they are missing out on significant music scholarship that is not available online or through Google. Today’s students have grown up searching the internet. The single-search approach of a web search leaves many students confused by terms like …
