Banking On Uncertainty: The Effects Of Institutional Quality On Commercial And Consumer Credit In Russian Regions, Katherine Ollenburger May 2008

Banking On Uncertainty: The Effects Of Institutional Quality On Commercial And Consumer Credit In Russian Regions, Katherine Ollenburger

Economics Honors Projects

Accompanying the recent credit market developments in Russia, banks have shifted their portfolios to a higher proportion of retail lending relative to commercial credit. This paper offers a microeconomic approach to explain this phenomenon, unsatisfactorily addressed in the literature. It focuses on the role of institutions in the rapid increase of individual lending. Using oblast level data from the Central Bank of Russia, it develops a model of lending decisions and uses time fixed effects to estimate the correlation between variations in institutional quality and increased loans to individuals.

This study investigates the influence of corporate governance attributes on thelikelihood of survival for 127 new economy IPO companies that listed on the ASXbetween 1994 to 2002. Our results alsosuggest that new economy IPO companies with low leverage and small company size aremore likely to survive. However, the results indicate that board size and boardindependence do …

Sudan's Expensive Minefields: An Evaluation Of Political And Economic Problems In Sudanese Mine Clearance, Matthew Bolton Jan 2008

Sudan's Expensive Minefields: An Evaluation Of Political And Economic Problems In Sudanese Mine Clearance, Matthew Bolton

Global CWD Repository

Sudan is an extremely difficult place to run a demining program. Mine clearance agencies face astronomical prices of goods and services, monumental logistical challenges, bureaucratic impediments from government, fraught labor disputes and a deeply embedded political economy of conflict. This multitude of problems has made Sudan one of the most unproductive demining programs, in terms of ordnance or area cleared per US dollar, in the world. This begs the question whether the level of international investment in Sudanese mine action is truly worth it. This paper will argue that in terms of saving lives or increasing access to socio-economic development, …

The Impact Of Knowledge Management Infrastructure On Organisational Competitiveness In A Confucian-Socialist Market Economy, Thi Nguyet Q. Nguyen, Philip A. Neck, Thanh Hai Nguyen

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The critical role of knowledge management (KM) in achieving and sustaining a competitive advantage (CA) has been strongly emphasised in the extant literature. However, most previous studies were conceptually grounded and empirically examined in advanced, developed and newly industrialised countries and from a large company perspective. Meanwhile, little attempt has been made to address the relative importance of different factors constituting the organisational KM infrastructure capability in the context of Asian emerging, less developed countries such as Vietnam where a socialist market economy, a Confucian culture and a majority of small and medium sized enterprises currently exist. By adopting a …
