Bowl Mania And Naming Rights, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Amidst the incessant whining and babbling about who is number one, comes the endless parade of bowl games, in which millions of dollars are spent on advertising, game production, and team payouts. This is matched in the realm of conspicuous waste by the binge of spending indulged in by participating institutions of higher learning to entertain boosters, legislators, and assorted hangers-on who haunt the halls of athletic departments. FSU dropped three-quarters of a million dollars on one recent trip.

UNL Libraries: Faculty Publications
Jay Hegde (Letters, 29 Oct., p. 637) asserts that “science students enter graduate school for the wrong reasons” when they seek “wholesale tuition waivers and stipends.” The implication is that students, with their sights set only on the big bucks they’ll rake in as graduate students, disregard that they may be unemployed after receiving their doctorate because of the lack of professional-level positions. Anyone who has gone through graduate school on a tuition waiver and stipend knows that big bucks it ain’t, so that is unlikely to be the major reason someone chooses to continue his or her education...

On Sport and Society
As I mentioned last week, sports books are often considered to be the perfect last minute Christmas gift, and as promised, today I will offer several suggestions of sports books as gifts to add to last week's baseball book list. For those hearing the evening broadcast these are literally last second suggestions.

Implications Of Tomorrow's Environment For Agricultural Economics Programs In Different-Sized Departments And For Non-Land Grant Universities, Ardelle Lundeen
Economics Staff Paper Series
This paper focuses on trends in five areas which appear to have significant implications for the future of agricultural economics departments: population changes, changes in the structure of agriculture, the advent of the information society/computer age, work force changes, and changes in higher education. I believe trends in these areas have already affected agricultural economics departments and will continue to do so.
