Syllabus Cpo 2002 (U03): Introduction To Comparative Politics (Fall 2017), Lukas K. Danner Dec 2016

Syllabus Cpo 2002 (U03): Introduction To Comparative Politics (Fall 2017), Lukas K. Danner

Dr. Lukas K. Danner

This course is an introduction to one of four sub-fields of political science: the comparative study of different governmental systems and units. As a field, comparative politics asks why countries possess different institutions, different degrees of economic development, or different state forms. Cases of conflicts or revolutions across countries (or across time within the same country), for example, are also part of comparative politics. This course aims to equip students with the various tools and methods to be able to systematically explore the similarities and differences in a comparison of different countries and/or cases.

Open Government Partnership En México Y Brasil: La Transparencia Como Responsabilidad Compartida, Juan Jaime Mesina Nov 2013

Open Government Partnership En México Y Brasil: La Transparencia Como Responsabilidad Compartida, Juan Jaime Mesina

Juan Jaime Mesina

Cultures Of Rioting And Anti-Systemic Movements In Southern Europe, Katia Andronikidou, Iosif Kovras Jan 2012

Cultures Of Rioting And Anti-Systemic Movements In Southern Europe, Katia Andronikidou, Iosif Kovras

Iosif Kovras

The article investigates why, despite similar background conditions, Greece has been the site of frequent, highly visible, fringe, anti-system politics and street riots, while similar phenomena are rare in Spain. Although the article’s focal point is the eruption of the December 2008 riots in Athens, it sheds light on the two countries’ diverse social reactions to the sovereign debt crisis. Deploying the tool of media framing, it argues that historical legacies and political cultures matter. In the Greek case, the transition to democracy shaped a political ‘culture of sympathy’ towards acts of resistance to the state, a culture that has …

¿Gobernadores Eternos? Un Análisis Comparativo De Las Reelecciones En Argentina Y Brasil, Lucas Jolías, Augusto Reina Jan 2011

¿Gobernadores Eternos?

Gestión Electoral Comparada Y Confianza En Las Elecciones En América Latina, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte Dec 2010

Gestión Electoral Comparada Y Confianza En Las Elecciones En América Latina, Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Fernando Barrientos Del Monte

Comparing Strategic Voting Under Fptp And Pr, Paul Abramson, John Aldrich, André Blais, Matthew Diamond, Abraham Diskin, Indridi Indridason, Daniel Lee, Renan Levine

Renan Levine

It is generally argued that strategic voting occurs in plurality-vote-win systems, but that the proportion of voters who act strategically diminishes as systems become more proportional. It is widely assumed that in PR systems voters care only about legislative representation and ignore the policy implications of their votes. We contend that voters in PR systems do vote strategically and that their decisions are guided by the potential to influence policy outcomes. We compare vote intentions in the United States, Mexico, and Britain, and the 1999 Israeli Prime Ministerial election, to PR elections in Israel and the Netherlands. We find that …

Instrumental Value Of Elite Memories On Past Violence During The Emergence Of A New State: Slovenian Experience, Anton Kramberger, Ana Barbič, Katja Boh Mar 2009

Instrumental Value Of Elite Memories On Past Violence During The Emergence Of A New State: Slovenian Experience, Anton Kramberger, Ana Barbič, Katja Boh

Anton Kramberger

The chapter touches upon the trauma of emerging from subordination to the past (communist) regime of some members (nearly 40 per cent) of the new Slovenian elite. The experienced subordination, including political maltreatment, imprisonment, or confiscation of their assets and/or property is important not only during the regime change (1988-1992) but also in any analysis of contemporary Slovenian political situation for these memories are rather regularly triggered in the public sphere. They frame unsettled contemporary political culture of the country and feed today’s discernable distrust of political authorities.
