U.S. Migration Of A Family Member: Impacts On The Activities Of Adolescent Boys And Girls Left Behind In Mexico, Elizabeth T. Powers, Qing Wang
U.S. Migration Of A Family Member: Impacts On The Activities Of Adolescent Boys And Girls Left Behind In Mexico, Elizabeth T. Powers, Qing Wang
Elizabeth T Powers
We use the Mexican Family Life Study to estimate the effect of a household member’s migration to the U.S. on the time use of family members left behind in Mexico. We show that the effects of migration on adolescents vary with both the migrant’s former household role and with the sex of the left-behind adolescent. Adolescent boys spend less time in paid and agricultural work when males migrate from the household to the U.S., while their mothers correspondingly increase their time in market work and reduce their housework time. We find no significant effects of U.S. migration on adolescent girls’ …

Small School, Big Reach: #11;Open Access Outreach On A Liberal Arts College Campus, Janelle L. Wertzberger
Janelle Wertzberger
The liberal arts college environment provides opportunities for campus-wide engagement of open access issues that may differ from those at larger institutions. Because we support fewer campus authors, we are able to provide a high level of service. Librarians’ close connections with faculty and students allow us to move beyond articles and theses and solicit a wide range of scholarly and creative works to share in our repository. In addition, we’ve fostered conversations about open access, open textbooks, altmetrics, and copyright among faculty, staff, and students. This poster will present a snapshot of a variety of outreach and education strategies …

Goats, Crayons And Bananas – Creative Ways To Fight Student Stress, Conny Liegl
Goats, Crayons And Bananas – Creative Ways To Fight Student Stress, Conny Liegl
Conny Liegl
More than 80% of US college students report feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, almost half of whom describe their academic experience as traumatic or very difficult to handle. Stress, sleep difficulties and anxiety are just some of the symptoms that manifest in college students. Undergraduates seem particularly susceptible to these stressors, but only one in five seeks medical consultation for their issues. (American College Health Association [ACHA], 2013)
To help students react to external and internal stressors, California Polytechnic State University’s Robert E. Kennedy Library initiated a program to support students during the most stressful times of the academic quarter. With …

First-Year Students' Perspectives On Reasons For And Prevention Of Their Own Alcohol Overdose, Janet Reis
First-Year Students' Perspectives On Reasons For And Prevention Of Their Own Alcohol Overdose, Janet Reis
Janet Reis
Two hundred twenty-six first-year students enrolled at a large, public Midwest university and deemed to require an emergency transport for a potential alcohol overdose completed a brief questionnaire on the student's perceptions of why the event occurred, what might have happened to prevent the overdose situation, and personal assessment of experience with alcohol. The explanations for the event revolve around personal decision making (made decision to drink too much, absence of drinking control behaviors) as opposed to peer influence. Similarly, factors selected as preventing an alcohol overdose focused on knowing one's own tolerance, plus having a buddy system to slow …

Indiana was admitted to the Union as the 19th state on December 11, 1816. Corydon, Indiana, located in southern Indiana, was the first state capitol until 1825, when the capital was moved to a more central location in Indianapolis. Indiana, located in the midwest, was formerly part of the Indiana Territory, dissolved in 1798. The first governor of the territory was William Henry Harrison, who served from 1800 until 1813. Harrison later became the into president of the United States, in 1840. Two constitutions have been ratified in Indiana: the first in 1816, and the current constitution in 1851. Indiana …

The Heart Of Equal Protection: Education And Race, Sharon E. Rush
The Heart Of Equal Protection: Education And Race, Sharon E. Rush

Brown vs. Board of Education established more than the unconstitutionality of the separate but equal doctrine in public education. Brown also gave the importance of education a constitutional dimension. Involuntary racial segregation creates a stigma wherever it exists which indisputably affects all children's self-esteem by possibly undermining that of children of color and by artificially inflating that of White children. Unfortunately, more recent cases that raise questions about the right to a public education seem less willing to acknowledge the importance of education and the importance of integration in public education. Since Brown, the Court has held repeatedly that education …

What Is Disaster Resilience Education?, Neil Dufty

Community disaster education, communication and engagement (ECE) is an integral component of emergency management in Australia and around the world. Its main goal is to promote public safety and, to a lesser extent, reduce damages. However, many governments around the world, including Australia, aim to also build community disaster resilience, with learning viewed as a critical mechanism. There is therefore a need to examine current community disaster ECE practices with a view to aligning them to the broader goal of disaster resilience. To attempt this, an exploratory research methodology was utilised to examine possible education content and processes that could …

Determining Data Information Literacy Needs: A Study Of Students And Research Faculty, Jake R. Carlson, Michael Fosmire, Chris Miller, Megan R. Sapp Nelson

Researchers increasingly need to integrate the disposition, management and curation of their data into their current workflows. However, it is not yet clear to what extent faculty and students are sufficiently prepared to take on these responsibilities. This paper articulates the need for a data information literacy program (DIL) to prepare students to engage in such an “e-research” environment. Assessments of faculty interviews and student performance in a geoinformatics course provide complementary sources of information, which are then filtered through the perspective of ACRL’s information literacy competency standards to produce a draft set of outcomes for a data information literacy …

Webinars are a low-cost and efficient training model that allow librarians to disseminate valuable information, connect with colleagues, and build and expand their communities beyond geographic and institutional boundaries. Yet, while many information specialists attend webinars on a regular basis, the task of hosting a webinar series may seem like a daunting and opaque challenge, even for enthusiastic webinar participants. In this poster session, Rebekah Cummings, Outreach Librarian at the Mountain West Digital Library, will demystify the process of implementing a successful webinar series including content creation, recruiting guest speakers, software selection, promotion, hosting the webinar, and follow-up. This session …

A Five-Step Process For Interactive Parent–Adolescent Communication About Hiv Prevention: Advice From Parents Living With Hiv/Aids, Laura L. Edwards, Janet S. Reis
A Five-Step Process For Interactive Parent–Adolescent Communication About Hiv Prevention: Advice From Parents Living With Hiv/Aids, Laura L. Edwards, Janet S. Reis
Janet Reis
The authors investigated how parents living with HIV/AIDS communicate about HIV prevention with their 10- to 18-year-old children. Semistructured interviews with 76 mothers and fathers were analyzed for (a) their experiences discussing HIV prevention with adolescents and (b) advice for other parents about how to best broach HIV-related topics. Interactive conversations were regarded as particularly effective. A five-step process for interactive communication emerged as a result of these discussions. Parents emphasized that adolescents should have a “voice” and a “choice” in HIV-related talks. Health care professionals can facilitate adolescent sexual health by encouraging parents to actively involve their children in …

Objectives: The aim of this study was to establish the feasibility and acceptability of an online asthma self-management program developed for older Australians with asthma. Methods: AsthmaWise, an internet education self-management program, was piloted for a 3-month period at the beginning of 2012. Participants were recruited using both online and offline strategies and were required to complete surveys, both pre- and post-intervention, in a repeated measures design. Results: Matched data were collected from 51 participants; the results showed AsthmaWise to be a feasible and acceptable method of delivering asthma education to the target population. Self-reported measures showed an increase in …

Finding a position in an academic library can be challenging for recent Library and Information Science (LIS) graduates. While LIS students are often encouraged to seek out experience, network, and improve upon their technology skills in hopes of better improving their odds in the job market, little research exists to support this anecdotal advice. This study quantifies the academic and work experiences of recent LIS graduates in order to provide a better understanding of what factors most significantly influence the outcome of their academic library job searches. The survey results demonstrate that the job outlook is most positive for candidates …

Innovation And Economic Education: An Integration, Eduardo Pol
Innovation And Economic Education: An Integration, Eduardo Pol
Eduardo Pol
Almost everyone agrees on the importance of educating a broad spectrum of the public about economics and business. It has been suggested by experts in economic education that universities should place greater emphasis on economics as a general education. The present paper develops a proposal to integrate innovation into elementary economic education that business faculties might use to enrich their general economic education offerings. We believe the proposal can be implemented through the design of a new subject - which may be called the 'Creative Economy' - supported by a method of teaching and learning by successive approximations. The study …

Increasing The Effectiveness Of Coach Education: Evidence Of A Parallel Process, Stewart A. Vella, Trevor P. Crowe, Lindsay G. Oades
Lindsay G Oades
The purpose of this study was to use the results of an exploratory case study to discuss the design and delivery of formal coach education pathways. Nine coaches completed qualitative and quantitative feedback on a formal transformational leadership training program. The theme that was consistently being presented by coaches was the need for learning to be situated within practical demonstrations and discussions where the coach learner and coach educator work collaboratively to facilitate understanding of the applications of program content to coaching practice. These results have been discussed in the light of the parallel processes that are evident in coach …
The Effects Of Shallow Economic Policies On The Value Of Domestic Currency: The Situation Of The Ghanaian Cedi, George E. Ekeha
The Effects Of Shallow Economic Policies On The Value Of Domestic Currency: The Situation Of The Ghanaian Cedi, George E. Ekeha
George E Ekeha
The local currencies of many emerging markets are going through some challenges today. The value of every currency is dependent upon its command over the local market products. When the goods and services available to the local market have bigger value of the foreign currency than the local currency, the value of the local currency becomes weaker. It is therefore very important for the emerging market economies to make very important policies that brings confidence of investors in the local currency. Unfortunately however, many of these economies such as Ghana have over the years been making decisions that are very …
