'Quality Ladders' And Ricardian Trade, M. Scott Taylor Dec 1993

'Quality Ladders' And Ricardian Trade, M. Scott Taylor

M. Scott Taylor

A Model of endogenous growth and trade is developed that extends the continuum Ricardian model of Dornbusch et al. (1977) to a dynamic framework, generalizes the 'Quality ladders' approach of Grossman and Helpman (1991a,b), and complements the work of Krugman (1987) on dynamic Ricardian economies. In contrast to earlier work the model incorporates heterogeneity across industries in research and production technologies, and in the technological opportunity for innovation. The importance of heterogeneity is demonstrated through a comparative steady-state analysis. Several applications for the model are discussed and many others appear possible given its relatively simple structure.

Relatedness And Performance: A Reexamination Of The Diversification-Performance Link, John Y. Ding, Julie Caswell, Furen Zhou Dec 1993

Relatedness And Performance: A Reexamination Of The Diversification-Performance Link, John Y. Ding, Julie Caswell, Furen Zhou

Julie Caswell

Empirical studies of firm diversification suggest the existence of a positive relationship between the relatedness of diversification and firm performance. Using evidence from the food manufacturing sector, we find that this relationship is weak at best and that market share appears to be a more powerful predictor of firm performance.

Predicting Birth Weight: Relative Importance Of Sociodemographic, Medical, And Prenatal Care Variables, Terri Combs-Orme, Christina Rtisley-Curtiss, Ronald Taylor Dec 1993

Predicting Birth Weight: Relative Importance Of Sociodemographic, Medical, And Prenatal Care Variables, Terri Combs-Orme, Christina Rtisley-Curtiss, Ronald Taylor

Terri Combs-Orme

This study uses the 1980 National Natality Study to examine the relative importance of sociodemographic factors, medical-risk factors, and prenatal care in predicting birth weight. Findings indicate that both sociodemographic and medical-risk factors are important in predicting birth weight, with medical risks accounting for slightly more variance (after accounting for social variables) in birth weight. Although prenatal care accounts for only 1 percent of the variance, a statistical interaction between prenatal care and labor complications accounts for an additional 1 percent.

A Reinterpretation Of Some Bay Area Shellmound Sites: A View From The Mortuary Complex From Ca-Ala-329, The Ryan Mound, Alan M. Leventhal Dec 1993

A Reinterpretation Of Some Bay Area Shellmound Sites: A View From The Mortuary Complex From Ca-Ala-329, The Ryan Mound, Alan M. Leventhal

Alan M. Leventhal

This monograph is a slightly revised and updated version of my 1993 thesis A Reinterpretation of Some Bay Area Shellmound Sites: A View from the Mortuary Complex from Ca-Ala-329, the Ryan Mound. This study addresses the archaeological assemblages derived from prehistoric site Ca-Ala-329, and applies generated data to pre-existing settlement-subsistence models developed for central California and the San Francisco Bay. When these data failed to conform neatly to the expected pattern of shellmounds-as-villages model, alternative explanations had to be explored. Alternative explanations were developed by critically evaluating the treatment of comparable published archaeological data from other San Francisco Bay shellmounds …

Problem Drinking And Symptoms Of Disordered Eating In Female High School Students, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Edward S. Huydic Nov 1993

Problem Drinking And Symptoms Of Disordered Eating In Female High School Students, Ruth H. Striegel-Moore, Edward S. Huydic

Ruth Striegel Weissman

Research on the relationship between problem drinking and disordered eating in adolescent girls has produced conflicting results. This study examines this relationship using a state-of-the-art inventory for measuring eating disorder symptoms and a standardized inventory for detecting problem drinking among adolescents. Two hundred thirty-four female high school students (mean age = 15.5 years) completed the Adolescent Drinking Index and the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire. Girls diagnosed with a eating disorder were twice as likely to be problem drinkers than girls who were not diagnosed with an eating disorder. Regression analysis and comparisons of problem drinkers and non-problem drinkers point to …

Constitutional Design And Law: The Political Economy Of Cabinet And Congressional Government, Matthew S. R. Palmer Nov 1993

Constitutional Design And Law: The Political Economy Of Cabinet And Congressional Government, Matthew S. R. Palmer

The Hon Justice Matthew Palmer

The dissertation takes a political economy approach to constitutional design and legislation in the Westminster (Cabinet) and US (Congressional) models of government. Part I develops the economics of comparative political organization by constructing a theoretical framework for analyzing constitutional design. Part II applies the framework to distinguish the essences of the Cabinet and Congressional systems of constitutional design in the contexts of US and Canadian federal government. Part III analyzes the effects of the different constitutional designs on the processes of legislating in each system and on the substantive characteristics of legislation in each system. The analysis is subjected to …

Session Duration And The Vi Response Function: With-In Session Prospective And Retrospective Efffects, James Dougan, Alfred Kuh, K. Vink Oct 1993

Session Duration And The Vi Response Function: With-In Session Prospective And Retrospective Efffects, James Dougan, Alfred Kuh, K. Vink

James Dougan

Two experiments examined the effects of session duration on responding during simple variable-interval schedules. In Experiment 1, rats were exposed to a series of simple variable-interval schedules differing in both session duration (10 min or 30 min) and scheduled reinforcement rate (7.5 s,15 s, 30 s, and 480 s). The functions relating response rate to reinforcement rate were predominantly monotonic for the short (10-min) sessions but were predominantly bitonic for the long (30-min) sessions, when data from the entire session were considered. Examination of responding within sessions suggested that differences in the whole-session data were produced by a combination of …

Two-Part Marginal Cost Pricing Equilibria With N Firms: Sufficient Conditions For Existence And Optimality, Aaron S. Edlin, Mario Epelbaum Oct 1993

Two-Part Marginal Cost Pricing Equilibria With N Firms: Sufficient Conditions For Existence And Optimality, Aaron S. Edlin, Mario Epelbaum

Aaron Edlin

We explore the interactions among firms with increasing returns regulated to break even by pricing with two-part tariffs. We provide conditions for existence and for efficiency of general equilibria with n-firms. This involves finding hookup fees that are voluntarily paid and cover the firms' losses from marginal cost pricing-a problem that because of both substitution and income effects is complicated by multiple firms using two-part tariffs, but that must be solved to ensure the continuity of demands necessary to prove break-even equilibria exist.

Faculty Consistency Pay Program, John Fraas Oct 1993

Faculty Consistency Pay Program, John Fraas

John W. Fraas

This paper presents the procedures that were used to identify faculty salary compression, as well as, a discussion of the compensation program that was designed and implemented at a university to reduce the degree of salary compression. An example of the procedure used in the compensation program to determine the amount of money received by each faculty member is provided. The impact of the program on salary compression at the university is analyzed, and the results of a survey of faculty and Dean perceptions of the program are reviewed.

Ozgur 1993 Turkiye'nin Ozel Cevre Koruma Bolgeleri Politikasi (Specially Protected Areas Policy Of Turkey) Türkiye'nin Özel Çevre Koruma Bölgeleri Politikası: Foça Örneği, Huseyin Ozgur Prof.Dr.

Huseyin Ozgur Prof.Dr.

Specially protected areas (SPAs) in Turkey were initiated in 1990 with the special interest of Prime Minister Turgut Özal and pressure from international agreements signed by Turkish Government. As of 1992, there were 12 SPAs in 5 provinces, most of them were on shorelines of lakes or seas. The decision making of SPAs policy in Turkey fit to muddling through. It helped to protect special and sensitive areas to be protected. All these SPAs had several small settlements and controversial usages of the land and water areas. The policy helped to control dense and uncontrolled settlements however created issues on …

Trips, Trade, And Technology Transfer, M. Scott Taylor Aug 1993

Trips, Trade, And Technology Transfer, M. Scott Taylor

M. Scott Taylor

A North-South model of unintentional technology transfer is developed where the stringency of sountern patent protection provides the institutional backdrop for a strategic game in a high-tech goods market. The appropriability regime is set endogenously and combines elements of imperfect sounthern patent protection with the protection afforded by market-made northern technology "masquing". Less stringent protection of northern intellectual property can "work" much like other strategic trade policies; therefore, developed countries appear to be right in demand discussion of intellectual property rights in GATT.

Validation Of A Portuguese Form Of Templer's Death Anxiety Scale, James M. Donovan Aug 1993

Validation Of A Portuguese Form Of Templer's Death Anxiety Scale, James M. Donovan

James M. Donovan

To translate Templer's Death Anxiety Scale into the Brazilian Portuguese Escala de Ansiedade de Morte, linguistic validity was first established by back-translation and calculating bilingual split-half reliability coefficients. Even-numbered items achieved a minimally adequate .59, while the odd-numbered items attained a satisfactory .91. The internal consistency of the Escala (.77) matches that found for the original scale. The construct validity was tested by replicating the interactions of the English form with (1) the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, (2) the Purpose-in-Life Test, and (3) Levenson's measure of locus of control. The Escala performed as expected, save for some difficulty with the locus …

Mutual Versus Unilateral Mistake In Contracts, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Ian Ayres Jun 1993

Mutual Versus Unilateral Mistake In Contracts, Eric Bennett Rasmusen, Ian Ayres

Eric Bennett Rasmusen

Courts sometimes allow contracts to be voidable because of mistakes in their basic assumptions. The common wisdom is that rescission is more likely to be granted if the mistake is mutual rather than unilateral---an incorrect belief common to both parties, not just to one. Rescission for mistake can be justified as a way to avoid inefficient transactions and to reduce the costs of collecting information on whether a mistake has been made. These reasons do not justify a general rule distinguishing between mutual and unilateral mistake.

Sexual Differentiation Of Vasopressin Projections Of The Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis And Medial Amygdaloid Nucleus In Rats, Geert De Vries, Z. X. Wang, N. A. Bullock Jun 1993

Sexual Differentiation Of Vasopressin Projections Of The Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis And Medial Amygdaloid Nucleus In Rats, Geert De Vries, Z. X. Wang, N. A. Bullock

Geert De Vries

The vasopressin-immunoreactive (AVP-ir) projections of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) and medial amygdaloid nucleus (MA) are much denser in males than in females even if males and females are treated with similar amounts of testosterone. Previous studies have established that testosterone influences AVP-ir projections during development, but not whether these effects of testosterone were permanent. This study tested the effects of various hormonal manipulations during development on the ability of testosterone to influence the AVP immunostaining in cells of the BST and MA and of fibers in the lateral septum of adult rats. In the first experiment, …
