À La Carte Cable: A Regulatory Solution To The Misinformation Subsidy, Christopher R. Terry, Eliezer J. Silberberg, Stephen Schmitz, John Stack, Eve Sando

Catholic University Journal of Law and Technology

Although “fake news” is as old as mass media itself, concerns over disinformation have reached a fever pitch in our current media environment. Online media outlets’ heavy reliance on user-generated content has altered the traditional gatekeeping functions and professional standards associated with traditional news organizations. The idea of objectivity-focused informational content has primarily been substituted for a realist acceptance of the power and popularity of opinion-driven “news.” This shift is starkly visible now: mainstream news media outlets knowingly spread hoaxes, conspiracy theories, and the like.

This current state of affairs is not some freak accident. The Supreme Court’s First Amendment …

Enjeu Social Et Politique Du Spectacle Dans Les Médias De Masse, Taoufiq Moueddene Aug 2021

Enjeu Social Et Politique Du Spectacle Dans Les Médias De Masse, Taoufiq Moueddene

Dirassat

Today, no one can deny the impact of mass media on social change in our contemporary world. However, in parallel with their technical development, moral grievances have paradoxically multiplied, not to call them into question in a radical way, but to bring out the deep and complex nature of their relationship to the creation and shaping of a social bond of ten meaningless. The interest of a critique of the mass media thus emanates from the fact that the frenzy of their technical evolution which has grafted itself, as well on the utopia of the communication as on the democratic …

The article deals with the analysis of cultural linguistic phrases in the media text. Mass information plays an important role in the continuation of language operations. This is determined by the qualitative changes in the general linguistic culture, and not only by the changes that have occurred due to the introduction of new information technologies. One of the most important issues facing modern linguistics is the study of functional methods of speech, the definition of their language features, the disclosure of the functional features of language units in the style of speech and their division into language facts. It is …

The ideal body type for women in the United States is morphing into one that not only requires a thin physique, but visible muscle definition and fitness. The athletic body type must still possesses feminine qualities such as large breasts, a smaller buttocks, and soft curves. Advertisements, fitness magazines, and internet memes have created a new level of perfection. How The Mass Media Use Numbers To Tell A Story: The Case Of The Crack Scare Of 1986, Jerome L. Himmelstein

This article presents a case study in the last of these. It asks in particular how important numbers really are in media constructions of a social problem. It focuses on the “Crack Scare” of 1986 in the United States and a classic study in social construction, Orcutt and …

Use And Abuse Of Scientific Knowledge: The Portrayal In The Media, Huma Baqai

Business Review

The utility of science and media to the human race is not a point of debate. The new paradigm is the interplay between science and media. Both are cost and time intensive endeavors, having a huge impact on public life and conduct. The use and benefits of sciences are innumerable and stand uncontested. The abuse of science comes from three sources. And this abuse happens because science sells. The three sources of abuse are: Politics·Media·Advertising These three sources are intrinsically linked. Our focus will be "media".

Truth Under Fire: The War And The Media, Gary S. Messinger Dec 2005

Truth Under Fire: The War And The Media, Gary S. Messinger

New England Journal of Public Policy

Over the last hundred years, the relationship between war and mass communication has become increasingly elaborate. Governments and private-sector organizations have found more and more ways to use the media in wartime, and the range of available technologies has expanded to include print, film, radio, television, and the Internet. The system that exists today, at the start of the twenty-first century, is the product of many twists and turns over the decades: an accretion of some strategies for wartime use of mass communication and a rejection of others. An understanding of this evolution is a starting point for crafting policies …

Regional Trends In Religion And Politics, Robert Goon Jan 2000

Regional Trends In Religion And Politics, Robert Goon

The Corinthian

As mass communications close the distances over which people routinely interact, there is a question about the increase in social homogenization at the expense of regional identity. In a society covering as much geographic area and encompassing as many cultures as the United States, the question is certainly valid. Traditionally, this diversity has been recognized as a "melting pot," an analogy attempting to institutionalize a sort of homogeneous diversity; the "melting pot" analogy is now giving way to notions of multiculturalism. However, one may wonder if this social diversity can avoid being buried beneath the homogenizing mass media culture. Whether …
